I've never heard of this.

Edit: apparently wife has. Put she is definitely more "worldly" than I am".

Check this shit out. Kenji Lopez Alt made a "definitive" (if such a thing exists) 'best chili ever' recipe, and the ingredient list is completely fucking wild.

  • 1 pound (450g) dried dark red kidney beans
  • 6 tablespoons (54g) Diamond Crystal kosher salt (for table salt, use half as much by volume or the same weight), plus more for seasoning
  • 3 whole ancho, pasilla, or mulato chiles, seeded and torn into rough 1-inch pieces (about 1/2 ounce)
  • 2 whole New Mexico red, California, costeo, or choricero chiles, seeded and torn into rough 1-inch pieces (about 1/8 ounce)
  • 1 whole cascabel, rbol, or pequin chile, seeded and torn in half
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons (9g) whole cumin seeds
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons (3g) whole coriander seeds
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 5 pounds (2.3kg) bone-in beef short ribs, trimmed of silver skin and excess fa
  • tFreshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 quart (900ml) low-sodium chicken broth (preferably homemade), divided
  • 1 ounce (30g) chopped unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) tomato paste1 tablespoon (5g) extra-finely ground coffee beans
  • 2 whole anchovy fillets
  • 2 teaspoons (10ml) soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) Marmite1 large yellow onion, diced fine (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 3 fresh Thai bird chiles or 1 jalapeo pepper, finely chopped1 tablespoon (3g) dried oregano2 bay leaves
  • 1 (28-ounce; 794g) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) cider vinegar, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) vodka or bourbon
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) Buffalo-style hot sauce, such as Frank's RedHot (or more to taste)
For Garnish (all suggestions optional):

  • Cheddar, Jack, or Colby cheese, grated
  • Sour cream
  • Jalapeo or Poblano peppers, stemmed, seeded, and diced
  • Onion, diced

Like you'll put chocolate and anchovies and worcestershire sauce and beer and masa harina in your chilli, but...not beans?

I think it's pretty wild that some people really think that a presidential pick - whoever it is - will immediately affect your salary in the short term.

I never said stolen. I chose my words with purpose.

Ok, but if we're being particular about words, how does stand your ground law apply to clotheslining an unsuspectiing teacher from behind because she presumably confiscated your property while you were in a classroom.

You saw the video right?

I've had a look at more details about this story. It seems like there are more complex factors involved. 1) the teen is likely autistic, which might affect their ability to process emotion and 2) the teen has been in an out of juvie for assault.

So maybe this has nothing to do with property being confiscated nor anything to do with stand your ground law, and maybe it was just a very troubled kid with a high level of social dysfunction not knowing that beating someone senseless is an inappropriate way to react.

oooo

  1. Your property being stolen by a thief is a little bit different from a teacher confiscating something in the middle of class, and
  2. It's likely that didn't even happen, since the teacher denies she confiscated the switch

I think prison is appropriate but I'm just not a fan of retribution as a justification for justice, which seems to be so many people's motivations when it comes to stuff like this. "He did a horrible thing so let's punish him. "

Call me a bleeding heart but if I see a teenager who completely loses his fucking mind because his nintendo switch was taken off him, I think maybe he needs help more than anyone.

What don't you people understand? Voting is an affirmative act. People have to have a reason to go out and do it. The vast majority of human beings only vote to protect or improve life for themselves or their loved ones. That doesn't seem to be on the table as both options will kill their loved ones. At that point, people lose interest, regardless of how bad the other option is.

I would've thought that people learned from 2016 that obligation politics doesn't work. The other guy is bad politics doesn't work if you are also bad enough for people. You have to offer a certain level of quality and "I'll kill your family regardless" is well below that level.

You and Biden are walking straight into a brick wall and then you're going to blame Muslims/Palestinians when you break your nose. However logical you think you're being, your logic is very limited if it can't account for this. Telling people that they're stupid, acting like they don't understand the alternatives, blaming them for the destruction of the Republic rather than asking Biden to be better.....we'll see how that works out.

You make some good points but I think this presents a false binary. I'm not sure anyone is making the argument that Biden is right because Trump is worse. They're just pointing out the gee, if you think Biden is a bad choice because of his weak stance on Israel, wait until the republicans get their hands on the situation and make him seem like a care bear.

In an ironic twist of the above, american politics is a binary, at least in any practical sense. Republicans bunker down and get tribal, democrats splinter while trying to be better. That's why republicans win.

I'm not sure how allowing republicans to win power because the democrats aren't as good as we want them to be is helpful.

So it's kinda nice that it's fashion forward to be able to wear very oversized everything.

As we know, conservatives are just rational level-headed intellectuals who don't rise to the low-stakes zero-sum game of identity politics, and their political decisions are driven entirely by economic anxiety.

But since Trump's decision to just add tariffs to everything last presidency was an unmitigated disaster for the American economy, and since he plans to do that but again but harder, what is the conservative stance on this?

I get it. America is a paradise and us peasants in the rest of the world should pay a premium for the privilege of doing business with you. But since that doesn't seem to work out in reality, what then?

If they can't fine you or penalize you in any other way then tell them to fuck off or just don't respond. At least until the neighbors come talk to you like adults.

The council is governed by the law and has significantly more power over you than a HOA as far as I acn make out, but it's just a matter of whether anybody could be bothered to action it.

With this particular incident, what I suspect happened is this:

  1. Neighbour disliked our hedge maintenance as a matter of preference
  2. They knew that this is a shit argument so they complained about it being a safety risk
  3. Council didn't bother to investigate and just sent a strongly worded letter telling us it was a safety risk

We are currently writing back to the council to inform them of what really happened, because the distance between the hedge and the road was over 3 metres.

So we bought a new house and it had a big hedge we were going to get rid of, because nothing lives in it.

First these neighbours complained (to the council) about the hedge because it was overgrowing. Had they been neighbourly and asked us they'd have known that we already had someone booked to cut it all down.

The council said we had to trim it because it was violating road safety laws (the nearest road in 5 metres away from the hedge). It turns out the real reason is the neighbours complained because it was blocking their view. Their view...of our house?

Anyway, we got it cut down. Then they later complained (to other neighbours) that they liked the hedge and wished we kept it.

Then they complained about our overgrown grass. We told them we were letting it grow so that it could complete its life cycle and give moths and butterflies a better chance of somewhere to live.

Said neighbours asked our hedge-cutter guy if he too was "one of those bleeding eco-warriors".

There's no forum that I can bring up to complain about my neighbours routing out all of their plants and replacing them with stones and concrete and toxic weed killer. But they can complain about our grass being too long.

In summary. We're living in an era of unprecedented bio-diversity collapse with entire ecological systems evaporating all over the globe, but rather than trying to give any wildlife a chance your neighbours and local council are far more worried about your lawn being perfectly symmetrical.

I feel this weird pressure to like Souls games more than I do.

I played Dark Souls, and sort of had a love hate experience with it, but liked that I got through it. But I can't really remember really enjoying myself at any time. I was just glad it was done.

I played maybe 10 hours of Bloodborne and eventually just hit a wall with "eh, the amount of grind required to get past this bit makes me FOMO over everything else I could be doing". I still want to finish it, but I'd probably need to start again.

I originally intended to play all the souls games in order, but at this rate I'll never get through them.

And time and time again people say Elden Ring is a GOAT game contender, and maybe it's just another one of those that I will never get through.

Only souls-like game I've ever truly loved was Hollow Knight, maybe because the art style and humour was some much needed levity in a game that was so brutally difficult.

Maybe I'm just trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Take boots. We can't just buy a pair of boots because they're pretty. We need reassurance that the real reason we're buying them is because it's built using superior craftsman ship, with quality materials. It has to be durable and resilient and about heritage or something. Guys that are into boots can give you a laundry list of construction and material techniques and what to avoid based on longevity and comfort and waterproofing and so on. Maybe they were the kind of boots that loggers in the 1960s used to wear. The aesthetics of them is sort of an embarrassing afterthought at the end of this list. "and they look pretty nice I guess".

You ask a woman these questions and almost universally they have never thought about this stuff. They bought them because they were pretty and because they go with such and such outfits.

I suspect in most cases most men are actually buying boots because they think they're pretty and because they go with such and such outfits, but nevertheless we'll still go with the "and it has a 360 goodyear welt" argument when pressed.

The same thing with cars. Those SUV adverts with the truck screaming sideways down sand dunes, and you ask the owner and he'll tell you about the torque output. Dude I know you, you drive that thing on the school run and the occasional trip to a comfortable glamping lodge 3 hours away.

People need to understand that even though his mental capacity decreased enough to pull off a mass murder he is not so far gone to forget his training. Do you understand that once you have military or combat training you are considered a deadly weapon. So you are now considered to be of a higher standard. The problem is alot of people's minds can't handle it.

He voluntarily went to a mental hospital for treatment at a military facility. Why the fuck would release that dude back into the world. A soldier is capable of alot of fucked up shit if his mind isn't right. The only way this guy gets caught is he turns himself in or his mind completely goes and starts making mistakes. He is literally trained to survive any situation.

Wouldn't surprise me he ditched his truck that way on purpose to throw off the search party.

These problems always seem obvious in hindsight.

I wonder how many veterans are currently in treatment or are seeking treatment for mental health and fucked up thoughts. I dunno, probably nearly all of them?

Legislation like this is terrible for everyone. Thanks to the EU we're stuck on USB C for the foreseeable future.

It's a good connector, for now. If a better connector is developed it either needs to be backwards compatible or this legislation needs to be repealed before it can ever actually make it into a product.

I disagree. You know what's terrible for everyone? Needing to buy a different adapter and cable for every single piece of technology I own and summarily discarding anything that's more than 6 months old because it's obsolete. What an incredible environmental burden.
