Not only did it win BP, it did it with a bizarrely irreverent tone and a sci-fi multiverse premise, all connected by some of the most amazing displays of character and emotion.

I walked out of the theater last march and said "that's one of the best movies I've ever seen, but there's no shot it gets the recognition it deserve" and I couldn't have been more pleased to have been wrong.

Never and I've seen some absolute garbage.

But I'd rather endure the garbage all the way through and take it as a character building learning experience.

I'm sure nearly everyone in our niche community would agree with that.

I worry if Gfaqs is unable to keep up with the times however it will decline into irrelevancy and the text based product will suffer as well.

Maybe I'm crazy for thinking that, idk

I definitely understand with the walkthrough part, and a detailed written walkthrough will always be hard to replace. I think it's fair to say that it would require a prohibitive amount of effort to put a video together that has the thoroughness we'd want from that sort of walkthrough.

But for many of the 'learning a game mechanic' situations I think enough people are more successful at visual learning and would prefer the experience of a video, even if it does mean putting up with the intros and outros.

In retrospect, I feel I basically only ever used Faqs for JRPGs.

And those should stay text guides. I hate trying to find something and the only way is opening some 5-minute video for what should be 2 lines of text.

But for seeing how to get past a platforming/action/etc segment or the exact location of a hidden item on a big map, etc, then yeah, videos I guess are probably much better.

There should absolutely still be both, but at this point the video guides should be at the top, and there should be trusted users who can organize/sort the videos for games they know about to ensure some level of findability. That way instead of "5 random ass tips for this game" you could locate "how XXX game mechanic works".

But it just doesn't make sense to have to scroll down past pages of text guides to find the videos. Just like you should be able to do just a general search for a query and have it prompt what might be a helpful video or text guide rather than just getting a list of games.

I should be able to search "breath of the wild cooking" and be taken to something relevant. Instead i get taken to the "home" page for Tears of the Fallen kingdom where a trailer autoplays and I have to try and navigate through everything myself.

But the same query on Youtube? Here are the top 2 results:

Do I just want to know about some of the best recipes? I'll click the first result. Do I want a more detailed explanation of cooking mechanics? The second one seems good.

Now I don't know how we get from the current GameFAQs setup to something that would actually be relevant in 2023, that's beyond the scope of my understanding. But I know that I haven't used GameFAQs for anything other than this message board in years and there's a reason why.

Honestly at this point the video guides should be the focus.

Either uploading to gamefaqs video hosting directly (with a short pre-roll add?)
Or by allowing embeds to youtube/etc

And if the former then including Upvote options (no need to allow downvotes) as well as view totals.

Reviewing well is definitely increasing the chances that I pick it up :)

Oh man pulling up a quality JRPG FAQ and printing dozens of pages out because it took a long time to pull them up using your dial-up internet.

How far we've come :)
