Pretty sure it wasn't that Japan refused to surrender in a vacuum, it was to secure an unconditional surrender and set up Japan as a bulkhead of US influence before the USSR could extract one/invade and establish Japan as bulkhead of Soviet influence.

Peace talks were sabotaged by American warhawks. The Japanese refused an unconditional surrender and the Americans wouldn't allow the diplomats to negotiate a surrender. It was overall a shit situation all around.

The difference between Japan and Vietnam or Iraq is the killing of millions of citizens not involved in the war, so I'd say some sympathy is definitely called for.

It's funny coming into this straight off FF16, because there are a lot of similar beats at the end, but every complaint I had with 16's ending is pretty much showcased in 6's ending but done in the way I actually would've preferred. Really enjoyed that.
