tl;dr: It does raise your risk for cancer by 13-20% in people. Specific sweeteners have caused rats to developed bladder cancer from it, but results aren't as conclusive for humans. Unknown if it contributes to a higher incidence of obesity (which in itself also increases the risk for a bunch of cancers)

This is like one of those things where you "DOUBLE YOUR RISK OF MYOCARDITIS" except that just means your risk goes from 0.01% to 0.02%

Nah. People lie. Police lie. Witnesses lie. Victims lie. Defendants can be tortured or threatened into a confession. Plenty of people who were "100% guilty" turned out to be innocent decades later as liars got exposed.

There's no good reason to have a death penalty. The only reason to have a death penalty at all is to sate bloodlust which is a vice we should never be indulging.

Yeah McCarthy is definitely wrong. Even if the DoJ held a fierce personal grudge against a particular group it seems that as a matter of practicality it's impossible to spend this level of time and resources against normal people in the first place. The DoJ's plate is already overflowing with the seditionists and most of them are still going to get away with it.

IMO when someone starts talking about normal people, they're not referring to the people wrapped up in extraordinary circumstances such as 1/6, Crime-a-Lago, or any of the other torrential bullshit brought in by Trump at the end of 2020 onward.

Normal people absolutely do have things to hide and normal people absolutely commit criminal acts on a regular basis without knowing about it.

There's obviously no way to attempt a coup and not know about it but again that's not a normal situation.

This is not true. A normal person might not have to worry about being indicted for mishandling government documents or the espionage act but everyone should be worried about general invasion of privacy.

It's also effectively impossible to not commit criminal acts because our laws are so poorly written and vague. One law scholar estimated the average person commits 3 felonies a day without realizing it.
