That's interesting. I've been viewing certs as a way of forcing myself upward in the industry, if that makes any sense.

I'll never forget my experience taking my first Cisco exam.
* Timed
* You get one chance to answer each question, so you can't go back and change an answer.
* They also give you these really small monitors to do the exam on, which is a bit jarring, imo.

My heart was pounding so hard through the whole thing. Then when you get to the last question and click "Next" to end the exam, it freezes for a few seconds. I guess it's uploading/synchronizing data and stuff, but it felt like something went wrong and I thought I did something wrong and was about to get disqualified or I was gonna have to start the whole thing over because of a software crash.

Then it said I passed. I immediately jumped out of my chair with fists raised in the air and walked around the exam room for a few seconds. Then I remembered where I was and quickly sat back down to finish the post-exam questionnaire. I think I was fortunate that I was the only one in the room because that would have been quite the distraction for other people, lol.

I failed my CCNA by 1 question. Never took it again and eventually transitioned into server work anyway. Partially why I haven't done many more certs outside the few MS ones I have. Shit is such a hassle and nerve wracking. lol

Oh, but yeah. Certs are absolutely the way to go in IT. I don't think my boss even gives a shit about any sort of degree.

I feel like I deal with this constantly. I'm a college dropout, and I have absolutely no interest in going back to school. So it feels like I'm not "supposed to be" on the same "level" as other network engineers. Even when people compliment me on my work or my skill set, it feels weird.

And then I feel like I'm commonly worrying that I'll get assigned some task that I'll absolutely bomb and then it'll result in me getting fired and falling down a spiral of failure. It's weird.

Absolutely. Pretty similar scenario as you as well, though I did end up getting my Associates (funny enough, in network design) and have worked my way into the position that I'm at now. I'm usually pretty good until something as stupid as another person getting a cert makes me start doubting myself because I haven't pursued one in awhile.
