Kind of turned me off the rest of the game. Love the soundtrack though It's a little dumb, but Downpour makes it canon that you can't do workarounds like that. A character says they need to find the keys to a boat to escape. The protagonist suggests just hotwiring the boat, but the character says that it wouldn't work. The basic premise is that you're Hades' son who's trying to escape to the world of the living. The big thing, I think, is that it's far more open world than most open world games. Open world games typically still have progression in their storyline. It wants you to go from Point A in this part of the map to Point B at this part to Point C. Elden Ring has some of that, don't get me wrong, but it mostly just does not care. It starts off with you staring at a huge castle. A character tells you to go to the huge castle. The save points all point you towards the huge castle. You can absolutely walk around that huge castle and go to the next area behind it if you want to. I myself found a little building that sent me to a completely different zone. I was about level twenty, this area is apparently recommended for level sixty. I managed to complete that area (albeit with some difficulty). There are a couple of blocks it puts in your way, but they're few and far between. The first one is that you can't enter the central area of the map without having killed two of the big-name bosses. Even then, half of the map is still available to you and there are four of these bosses that you can pick and choose from. The second is that you have to kill the boss of that central area to unlock the rest of the map. The third is that there's a secret area that you need special items to unlock. The zones themselves are chock-full of shit to do. I platinumed GoW:R in the same amount of time it took me to mostly complete the first two or three zones. Admittedly, one of the biggest criticisms of the game is that it kind of frontloads this content and that the dungeons are mostly different configurations of the same catacomb and mine environment. The content is also fairly meaningful. I do a bandit camp in Horizon or a rift tear in God of War and I get some crafting materials and some money. You do a side dungeon in Elden Ring and you get a new weapon or a new spell or an armor set or something like that. It might not be something you'll use for your build, but you're guaranteed to get something for every little thing that you do. And finally, Elden Ring doesn't care if you miss things. Even being pretty strict by cutting out repeats and ones that are just normal enemies with scaled up health, there are still about 30-40 bosses in this game. You can beat this game with just thirteen bosses. As a result: ~~One faction was tricked into awakening the ancient robot swarm under the belief they could be used as weapons, nearly causing the extinction of all life again.~~ The tribes hunted Zero Dawn's terraforming robots. This caused the function responsible for them to retaliate, making the existing robots more dangerous and hostile. It also began creating new hunter-killer robots devoted solely to killing humans. If allowed to continue, this function would have happily wiped out all human life. ~~They were completely unprepared for an attack from a space-faring colony that escaped Earth's extinction. Said colony wanted to wipe out all life on Earth to rebuild it to their own tastes.~~ So Ted Faro betrayed the human race so hard that he caused three extinction-level events.
