What makes this game different? Rowling still saw royalties with the movies but nobody called for a boycott over those. If anything, there were more people upset over Johnny Depp not returning for the third one more so than Rowling getting paid.

Yup. The people attacking others over this game don't actually care about helping trans people, they just want to feel better than other people over a game they had no intention of purchasing. It's why the entire thing has started and stopping at Hogwarts Legacy, because actually doing anything meaningful that would actually require effort from them is too much.

I'd say the ethics are based not on the fact that it's a video game but on where the sales of that video game are going to.

The weirdest thing to me about the whole boycott Hogwarts Legacy is that people seem to stop right at boycotting Hogwarts Legacy. There's no push to boycott universal studios (another place JK Rowling makes royalties off of).

There's no push to boycott other games made by companies caught with sexual harassment allegations such as Blizzard and Riot.

There's no push to boycott games being funded by countries that abuse human rights.

I would take the boycotters seriously if it felt like they weren't only targeting Hogwarts Legacy, because it was something they weren't already going to buy.

According to Politico, Santos was charged with theft by deception in 2017 in Pennsylvanias Amish Country after a series of bad checks totaling $15,125 were written in his name to dog breeders in the area.

But while the truth-challenged congressman was charged with the crimes, it was later expunged from Santos record after he claimed his checkbook had been stolen.
Attorney Tiffany Bogosian, who was a middle school classmate of Santos and reconnected with him in 2020, told Politico that the then-future congressman told her the checkbook had gone missing in 2017 and blamed someone he knew for its disappearance.
He also told her that he canceled the checkbook with TD Bank as soon as he had noticed it was gone.
In February 2020, Bogosian sent an email to Trooper Adams arguing Santos case using the information he gave her.

As such no checks were ever cashed or presented against his account due to his cancellation of all checks linked to this account. The account was closed on March 3, 2018, for personal reasons unrelated to any alleged fraud on his account (banking preference), Bogosian wrote.
The message included copies of nine canceled checks to eight different people and corresponding bank statements from Santos account showing a negative balance of $690 on Nov. 4, 2017, and another negative balance of $349 on Dec. 3, 2017.
Bogosian told the trooper that the signatures were different on each of the checks and attached Santos New York State drivers license to show the signature on that ID didnt match any of the ones on the checks.
She also said that Santos was clearly a victim of fraud but hadnt realized it until he was served with a warrant because he had already closed the account and canceled the checks.
But Bogosian told Politico she now doesnt believe her former classmates claim after he tried to get one of her personal injury clients to invest with a Florida firm that the Securities and Exchange Commission later said was a Ponzi scheme.

I did think it was so weird at the time that his checks didnt have his address or phone number listed on them, she said. To be honest, even at the time I questioned it.
The news of Santos being charged with stealing puppies comes weeks after a disabled veteran accused him of fundraising for his service dogs lifesaving surgery and then disappearing with the money.

Iunno why IGN gets singled out for the review when basically every independent YTer who reviewed the game said similar things about it and scored it along the same lines.

Some people were really hoping the game was going to be bad and have a hard time accepting that the game itself is actually good.

Also she had very little to do with the development of the game.

Not to mention the discourse over the game isn't going to create any laws for or against trans people. So people spending so much effort attacking the game when there's bigger fish to fry are just hurting themselves.

What one was it? I've only ever seen r/HarryPotterGame for HGL.

Chances are he found some small subreddit for the game that isn't the official one people actually go to.

Harry Potter fans are just as bad as superhero film fans when it comes to other people not liking what they like.

No one would have an issue if the people not liking the game weren't going out of their way to attack anyone playing it.

When you attack people and call them bigots for buying a game don't be surprised when people attack back.

Whole thing could have been avoided if people didn't decide to be toxic over a video game.

Some people think that any negative interaction towards trans people means you are transphobic.

There was never a boycott. It was a bunch of people who weren't planning on buying the game attacking people who were interested in the game.

An actual boycott is what happened with D&D and the OGL. People who were paying for D&DBeyond membership canceled their memberships to show their disapproval of the new OGL and since it was people who were actually buying their product refusing to give money it forced Wizards/Hasbro to actually go back on the OGL.

Being able to respecc and unlocking all the skills are different things.

Games can allow someone to respec while still preventing them from unlocking every skill. Sometimes people try out something and don't like it and would rather try something else.

Many people are buying the game, because they like Harry Potter not because they are transphobes.

On top of that, buying the game is not a statement of transphobia either. It just means you want to play a Harry Potter game.

The only bad people are the ones attacking others over a video game.

Its not being mildly rude. Its accusing your own community of being traitors and supporting trans genocide for working on or buying a video game.

Transgender people are in danger due to the vile legislation thats getting passed and the fear mongering about them. But this game isnt that high on the list of things they and supporters should be worried about.

You have to understand that some people will never understand this. They'll rather close the gates while demanding everyone accepts them not understanding how that ruins their own messaging.

It feeds into a lot of misconceptions. It's not something that's suddenly going to turn a bunch of supporters into altrighers, but any damage to a cause that's already being battered by the media isn't going to help it. Something so under attack at all times needs as much support as it can humanly get, so every little bit of damage to its public perception is going to add up.

Not to mention you have people disqualifying other people's support for trans rights over a video game.

While people aren't suddenly going to become anti trans over this, there's certainly going to be less people inclined to want to help people being hateful towards them over something as silly as this.

Probably. My girlfriend likes Harry Potter and I've read the books and enjoyed them as a kid. It seems like a game we could actually enjoy together.

The kind of people who care so much about what other people do in their free time are not activists. These people don't actually care about trans people either. They are using trans people as an excuse to attack other people.

I'm not defending the production of deep fakes you utter dunce. I'm not going to sit here and tar and feather the people who didn't make or publish the deepfake though. I'm not going to tar and feather people who steal porn (Which is all of you, you've all stolen porn and it was obvious when you stole it. I know it and you know it). We live in a society that has intentionally torn down every barrier for what we could consider "ethical consumption" so that we all live in glass houses yet we all have stones. Atrioc watching those deepfakes was a dumb thing to do, but it wasn't a malicious act. A simple apology is appropriate. None of us have the standing, though, to judge him. None of us are saints.

Why is it so hard for you to watch stuff that isn't someone's face placed over a naked body? A situation where neither party is able to give consent.

You're picking the wrong battle here. There are other options that don't involve invading a person's consent.
