7 episodes into Monster. It's a reasonably well made show, but I think the jury's still out on how interested I am in what it's offering. I don't have much specific to say, but it feels like the show's hook just hasn't really landed for me so far.

Johan mostly bores me right now, which I suspect will be problematic for my continued interest if nothing changes, but this early in the show that could very easily change.

3rd is very different. I like it a lot, but it's one of the more controversial entries for reasons that are very understandable.

Also for the record I agree with 3rd not being necessary if you aren't planning on continuing with the series. FC and SC are more or less a standalone story. 3rd has an important role in the context of the series as a whole as well as introduces some specific plot threads for the next sub-series, but I don't think you'd feel like you were missing something if FC and SC was all you had. I do like 3rd a lot though so I recommend it on its own terms even aside from any importance it has or doesn't have to the rest of the series.

Also I don't really advise trying to engage with the series as a whole--just take it game-by-game and keep playing if you want to see more or don't if you're tired of it.

Katanagatari some of my favorite anime visuals. Probably not quite at the top, but I thought this would be one of the easier ones to convey with a limited amount of content. It gives the show this really cool storybook quality to it. The whole show is exploding with color as well, and I like all of the flair on the character designs. Really cool show and it's shame that it's fallen a bit off the face of the Earth due to not being available for streaming anywhere.

Mega from a flavor standpoint. Z-moves from a gameplay standpoint, though I will say that I haven't actually played gen 9 at all and Tera looks like it has a lot of potential gameplay-wise.

It was recent, but the reason I said specifically "the past year or so" is because the last time I had a Netflix subscription was around when Arcane came out. (I think like 1 year+3 months or something, not 100% sure)

Arcane was fantastic though, yes.

Decided to temporarily get a Netflix subscription again mainly so that I can watch Monster. Are there any other Netflix-exclusive shows from the past year or so that I should check out? I am aware of Cyberpunk and Uncle From Another World, though I would be lying if I said I had even a shred of interest in the former.

My honest take here is "don't try to do everything in one playthrough, and if that's a dealbreaker then fine, play something else."

Does this mean there is no more Hunter x Hunter manga or that it's being published in a different format? (For the moment ignoring that it's been on almost continuous hiatus for years anyways)

The bill sucks either way but I think the CNN article is being misleading. The actual text of the bill that they're quoting a section of is:

(1) The Legislature finds it necessary that every undergraduate student of a public postsecondary educational institution in the state graduates as an informed citizen through participation in rigorous general education courses that promote the values necessary to preserve the constitutional republic through traditional, historically accurate, and high quality coursework. Courses with a curriculum based on unproven, theoretical, or exploratory content are best suited to fulfill elective or specific program prerequisite credit requirements, rather than general education credit requirements.

They're only saying that theoretical and exploratory content is better for major-specific courses, which in terms of at least the spirit (though probably not the letter) of the law I think is basically correct. Even focusing on general courses I don't read this as a ban on such content, and I think any reasonable interpretation would agree. The fact that we need to rely on interpretations being reasonable is of course a problem.

Edit: There's obviously a lot more to the bill than this. I'm only posting the full section with the one excerpt. To give context I should also clarify that later on there is a section that basically says "General courses must meet the course standards as provided in [section I quoted above]"

I love the visuals of Twilight Princess. I don't know if it's necessarily the design itself as much just like the color palette or something, but the game just has this really eerie ambiance to it especially during the Twilight segments and it just felt really cool to play through.

I was a fan of Final Fantasy for 5 years before I even knew what the FF main theme was, and even now I couldn't tell you when or if it plays in any of the games other than the credits of FF9.

My pick is Seattle but I think that is more just me having an unusually high amount of love for that area than anything.

LA was my choice before coming into this topic and being reminded that Atlantic City was a place that exists.

Vegas is overrated I think but even as someone who hates casinos it's still pretty firmly in "good city" territory which is enough to put it out of contention here.

I liked New Orleans a lot when I went there.

Oh I like Planet DOB visuals a lot huh. (probably more than it deserves?) That is an aesthetic that just doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Well ok maybe it's a bit more complicated than I said since I think the wording means the ETB gives you a static until-end-of-turn effect, but I think the result is the same. Rise and Shine turns them into creatures which means they are no longer considered noncreature artifacts.

I think they will still be base 0/0's (with 4 +1/+1 counters and flying), so you'll be swinging with a bunch of flying 4/4's and not 8/8's.

Rise and Shine says they become artifact creatures, which means they'll no longer be affected by the Awakener's ETB trigger.

I like Steins;Gate a lot but I always thought it was pretty unremarkable from a visual standpoint.

Runescape was good fun when I used to play it. I probably wouldn't rate it highly on visuals, but there is a certain charm to some of it I think. (This is probably nostalgia)

Yeah I think the premise of Blue Lock (the program within the anime of the same name) is kind of dumb if you think about it too hard, but I'm okay with it from the standpoint that it's just a catalyst to create high(ish) stakes sports matches.

I would recommend Haikyuu over Blue Lock personally but I like both quite a bit.

Blue Lock is great. I don't picture it as a Roba show but I've been wrong before.

Actually wait nvm I missed that the trailer was there also but I think that does a much better job.

Which to be fair is probably generically true of video clips of media that were not intended to be viewed as still images.

I like Persona 5's style but I'm not sure how highly I'd rate it just based on those images.

Probably not last but still. I'm not a fan of the color scheme on that particularly enemy here either.

Not liking Reigen is a large part of why Mob Psycho fell flat for me I think.

Season 1 was solid, but then season 2 had some arc I didn't like for reasons I can't remember, before immediately following it up with a Reigen-centric arc, and at that point I was just done.

Finally it's time for the long-awaited best timezones contest

I really liked this week's Blue Lock episode. The show's been consistently pretty good, but this is the first one that really had me on the edge of my seat the whole time like I was watching Haikyuu or something. Isagi is such a good protagonist.

The Trails of Cold Steel anime also had a pretty good episode this week despite being rather inconsistent overall. I don't think I'd ever recommend the show because parts of it are...not good, and the only reason I can really stomach those parts is because I already have a large investment in the world from the games. But yeah, at least personally I'm definitely excited to watch where it goes from here.

Classroom Crisis looked like the kind of show I would like but then most people I saw talk about the show hated it so I never watched it.

Ok I didn't actually watch Witch from Mercury because I assumed it would be more Gundam than yuri but this is the only reason the show was ever on my radar to begin with.

I prefer Death Note by a lot. Even the worst parts of Death Note are a league ahead of the best parts of Geass.

I do not think Code Geass is a good show at all but it's at least the type of thing that is fun even when it's a mess.

Except for episode 22 which is one of the stupidest things any anime writer has come up with in a show I've seen, but I digress.

Finished Ranking of Kings.

There was stuff to like throughout, but the first half of this show was much better than the second half. In particular, I didn't like how strong the show ended up making Bojji. I think it would have been better if they made him at best a competent fighter with the idea being that his strength lies with other aspects of his character. Also Miranjo and Bosse's character fell pretty much completely flat, which was particularly unfortunate for the last few episodes, and the way the the ending treats Miranjo is bordering on insulting.

Overall a pretty good show though with a mostly great knack for character writing and some really good direction. Also Hilling is the best.
