Friendship: The idea of friendship is good, and the moves that utilize it. But the fact that so many pokemon evolve based on it, and it always requires maximum happiness, is super annoying. I once wanted to use an Umbreon in gen 2, and I had to ride a bicycle back-and-forth for like a solid thirty minutes or something. Also: how the hell did gen 6 add the affection mechanic, which is the exact same thing as friendship, except called affection? Just totally inexplicable.

Luvdisc: Luvdisc is terrible, of course. Completely useless shitmon, and we all know it. But that's not why it's so low on my list, not by itself. It's that Luvdisc's gimmick is just to provide you with heart scales. Gen 9 has made heart scales meaningless... and yet Luvdisc is still available. Completely inexplicable. At least other bad pokemon are sometimes useful in some capacity.

Ash vs Cynthia: For you, I watched it online. Ash has a Sirfetch'd? What a bizarre pokemon for the hero to use. Looking it up, Ash fights Steven, Cynthia, and Leon? Cynthia is obvious, but what odd choices. I see Wallace got snubbed, too. Who the hell is Alain? lol Dragonite going down like a chump. Wow, you're sure using a lot of grass attacks against a Gengar. lol Pikachu also being killed by an air slash from a fully evolved pokemon, that's about accurate. Wow, Pikachu can just knock stones at you with iron tail huh, that's new. I like how they build up Spiritomb so that Pikachu can heroically sacrifice itself to take it down. Wow, Ash's other pokemon watching on TV, let's not even address questions about that. I'm thinking Charizard, Snorlax, Infernape, Krookodile, and maybe Noivern might've been options than Pikachu or Sirfetch'd, bro. Dracovish, I really hope the anime addresses how its life is constant pain because its body isn't even a body. Wow, Cynthia sure is making a show of throwing her pokeballs out. Is that the SECOND "run past the enemy and pause with your back to it and it falls over" scene in one fight, come on. Oh my god that's a third time, and it happened right after the second! Ash has a Lucario, huh? I like how Lucario looks all badass while Togetic just looks like a goof, but it's presented with total seriousness. Cynthia, you're gigantamaxing your pokemon THIS late in the game, come on. That's something you do early on. I like how Ash looks super concerned, I haven't watched the anime in forever, but I have to believe he's seen this before. Lucario goes mega, actually it's kind of cool to see the games' gimmicks put against each other, I'll admit it. No surprise that Ash gets megas, because they're cooler and because being gigantic and scary isn't a heroic trait, you need to beat the odds. Did Ash have this power in the anime, he must have, right? I hope it's established in the anime that you can't use two gimmick powers, and Cynthia and Ash simply chose different ones. Did all of the champions have one, or is it just this battle? Wow, Cynthia, you sure aren't using earthquake against this steel type, I'm just saying. I like how someone had to find a way to make Garchomp make a face where it's surprised and in pain, that's such a silly face to have to make for a jet airplane shark dragon. That's like the third time we've had a simultaneous knockout lol. Imagine being a grown adult and losing to a ten-year-old, embarrassing for Cynthia.

Sushi-Go-Round: I watched an entire video of this to reacquaint myself with it. Lickitung is such an odd pokemon to get its own minigame; it's not one of the 'big' pokemon of gen 1 at all. The idea of the game is good, but I feel like you could have added a pokemon in the background throwing the new sushi onto the plates instead of the sushi just magically appearing on them. Overall, it's pretty good.

Pokemon Contests: This is the perfect example of something that's good conceptually and bad practically. Conceptually, this idea is amazing: another big 'thing' to do with pokemon besides battling. Showing them off in contests is still competitive, it still uses the pokemon's unique strengths, it's all just a great idea. Too bad it's not fun.

Regicries: I love it. It's not just that it's weird and silly and ancient and fit robots, it's that all of these sounds are NOTHING like anything else in the entire franchise. Some of them sound like actual horror movie sound effects, like that beating dun-dun-dun-dun-dun sound. This and the fact that they don't really have faces really help establish the alien/robot feeling they show compared to everything else in the series. Unown WISHES it could be this creepy and weird. Like, you could legitimately make a horror game out of hiding from these things, where you see their shadows and hear the thumping of their voices.

Because they have design appeal reminiscent of some of the early generation Pokmon. Nintendo never took into account that they are a blatant ripoff of those... and Game Freak also forgot to make them actually useful in battle beyond the first gym. Most people who ever use one use the gift one in the first gym and then box it. The rest are young kids, but even a lot of them realize how bad the monkeys are.

Yeah, you know, thinking on it further, I realize that the monkeys also dont integrate their elements into their designs very well. They mostly just have an image of their element on their foreheads, and thats it, theres very little fire/water/grass imagery in the rest of their bodies.

Elemental Monkeys: I don't think anyone likes these things, right? They're all awful. The grass one is the least bad, and the water one is the most bad, but make no mistake: they're all complete ass. And that's the thing, and the reason why they're this low. They're not really the worst pokemon out there or anything, but they're the worst pokemon that are pushed this hard. Evolution: I think of every concept in the series, this is the one that most clearly betrays the original inspiration being bug collecting. It has nothing to do with real evolution at all, not even a little bit, but it does have to do with bug transformations. It's just such a cool idea, combining the idea of like caterpillar-to-butterfly transformations and like anime power-up transformations. I can imagine that the original intent was to make kids be surprised at how their animals turn into new versions and be excited to learn what they'll be, too. Just a 10/10 idea in all regards. I might've put it on the top, but the fact that NFE pokemon are sometimes cooler than their fully-evolved versions (Dragonair), but effectively can't be used, holds it back very slightly.

Seafoam Islands: This was my least favorite area as a kid. Navigating it was super annoying, dropping the boulders into the holes was even more annoying, and being drowned in Golbats, Slowbros, Staryus, and Dewgongs is not quite as annoying, but still very annoying. I usually just navigated around it by surfing south from Pallet Town, but then had to go back for Articuno. Yes, I was dorky enough to play RBY's story like ten times, sue me.

It looks cool, it has a cool typing, it gets lots of cross-gen support (as opposed to like Venomoth), and I want to say that it's the most common favorite bug pokemon? Alder isn't the best champion, but he sure beats Geeta. I feel like Volcarona is the only time GameFreak put real effort into advertising a bug pokemon, and it shows.

Gligarman: Again, this is one of those things that I assume Japan just has a different relationship to than the United States. I imagine that to Japan, Batman is just a weird exotic foreign thing, the way we'd look at a Godzilla reference. I have no problem with that. Imagine choosing Gligar as your namesake, though. The anime had a big problem about introducing the pokemon of the day by having the heroes find a village where they have a festival in honor of that pokemon, and this isn't that, but it made me wonder how many local spirit festivals Japan has. Must be some!

Trade Evolution: It's annoying to play older games and be locked out of trade evos. I think the idea with trade evos is that kids were supposed to trade pokemon to their friends and be like "whaaaaaaaaaat" when they unexpectedly evolve, but even in 1998, I don't think that ever happened.

Blue (Rival): Blue is everyone's favorite rival, and it's for obvious reasons. He's the only one with a direct connection to the main character (Oak's grandson and your childhood rival), he's just a complete dick the entire game, he's the only person to actually match you and become champion, and he never learns his lesson. I mean I guess he does in GSC, but in RBY, he never learns to not be a dick. He's always a step ahead of you, he's always certain of his superiority even when he ambushes you outside of a cave, he really does behave like a playground bully. Easily the greatest rival in the series.

Who is the First Pokemon: I do like this question, it's pretty clever. But yeah, does Arceus retcon Mew? I guess you can argue that Arceus, as a deity, can somehow out-logic the logic of it being impossible to create something that precedes you, but I don't know. There's no Pokemon Legends: Mew. I'm not sure what other pokemon warrant their own games, you know? Arceus is unusually important even for a legendary, it's mostly just it and Mew, and maybe the Weather Trio.

PokeGods: The best thing about the pokegods is how they were based on nothing. There would later be a pokemon you could describe this way, but back in 1998, this was a rumor based on NOTHING. At least the truck exists in the game, at least Mewthree is the logical progression of Mew and Mewtwo. But the pokegods are a concept that came out of nowhere, had nothing backing them up AT ALL, and still consumed the playground rumors. Thanks to the internet, there can really never be rumors like this ever again.

Pokemon Power: For some reason, the part that made me laugh the most was the woman nodding. God, remember moral guardians freaking out about Pokemon and Harry Potter and D&D? I mean, obviously this video gives this preacher the exact amount of respect that he deserves, but will this kind of reactionary moral guardianship ever return? "I assure you these creatures want to ruin your brain," so good. My only criticism is that they don't take advantage of him saying "children might be stabbed" to make a STAB joke.

Meowth (Team Rocket): Team Rocket was always better than the heroes, of course. I enjoy how no one was really that impressed with Meowth being able to talk and walk on two legs. At first, minor characters would be surprised, but then the writers just stopped caring. Notably, there is not a single talking pokemon in any of the games, I think, right? It's also funny that Pikachu isn't even the only pokemon that refuses to evolve, Meowth actually harms that bit of the main pokemon's specialness. It would be funny if the new anime is set like twenty years later and Meowth is finally a Persian, but still walking on two legs.

Lack of Physical Electric Moves: I don't demand that all types be equally special and physical. Did you know that there's no special-focused fighting pokemon besides Keldeo? Just hybrids. But I think electric is a pretty good candidate for being equal. Yet, looking at the list of electric attacks, if you discount signature moves, Z-moves, and dynamax moves, you've only got nuzzle (lol), spark (lol), thunder fang (lol), thunder punch, and wild charge. What an odd decision.

I'm sorry, I know that can't be what you expected, and I know it'd be more interesting to to talk about how Pokemon has way more weird spinoffs I'd never heard of than I expected, but... all I can think about is if this is canon. In Pokelore canon, is there really a Minecraft-esque island where the pokemon are made out of "pokexel" and look like voxels? What a hideous fate that would be, to be born on this island. Imagine a normal Pikachu meeting a voxel Pikachu, it would be something out of a horror movie.

Pokemon Trainer (Smash Bros): This is a brilliant idea executed as well as possible. Smash is at its best when it integrates a game's mechanics in a weird and interesting fashion, and integrating the "switch out" mechanic this way is so clever. I'm glad he returned, even if it cost Charizard its unique slot. The only thing I can think of is that his final smash should be throwing out a legendary pokemon that's ultra strong instead of the "triple beam" thing. Way too many characters in Smash have final smashes that are just multiple characters from their game teaming up to attack the target.

Paul (Anime): Paul's the best anime rival by quite a lot. He beats and loses to Ash, he comes across as way more of a threat than most trainers, and he has a great moment in the championship fight. Paul goes through the entire tournament without losing a single pokemon, then gets to Ash. Ash plans to fight knowing that Paul will attempt to sweep him, only for Paul to just sacrifice a pokemon to get an advantage. And Paul stealing Ash's ideas on how to use moves in new ways? Great move.

ZERO-ONE: I understand that they needed to make a fantastical vehicle to ride around in, even though the first game establishes the existence of normal trucks and boats. This is fine. It's nothing special, it's nothing super interesting. Have you seen the official art of it? It looks almost like Toriyama drew it, I don't know why. I feel like if you were going to design a vehicle to let you take photos of pokemon in their native habitat, you wouldn't paint it bright yellow.

Dracozolt, Dracovish, Arctozolt, and Actovish: Fucking 11/10 idea to take those 1800s fossils that early paleontologists had no idea what to do with and assembled at random and turn that into pokemon. You can so easily see how the pokemon are "supposed" to look and how an incompetent fossil restorer screws it up. A fish's head being put on backwards is funny, but the true star of the show is Dracovish. Assembling a fish's head onto a reptile's tail, and then the midsection just abruptly cuts off, and they call it done? Brilliant. I haven't watched the anime in forever, I'm curious how the anime handles this.

Herman Cain Quotes Pokemon 2000: I really like how he tries to avoid admitting the Pokemon movie said this, and says he doesn't know where it originally came from. He was called out on plagiarism immediately, but he just kept saying the quote. It's not even that good of a quote! You don't really need it for your campaign! But I mean, really, here's the thing. There is no way Herman Cain has seen Pokemon 2000, and if he did, there's no way he'd remember a quote verbatim. This has to be the work of a speechwriter in their 30s, right? Who either plagiarized the movie or was doing a joke that they thought no one would catch, but that instead everyone caught. Like, I can believe that Hillary Clinton heard the words "Pokemon Go" in reference to something young people are doing and tried to make a joke out of it, but I cannot believe that Herman Cain saw and remembered this movie. The idea of this big important man worth millions of dollars in the middle of his presidential campaign quoting a movie that heavily features Tracey Sketchitt is the funniest thing ever, the only reason it's below Pokemon Go to the Polls is that Herman Cain isn't as famous as Hillary Clinton, so him making a fool out of himself isn't as funny. Like, no matter your politics, you have to at least admit that Donald Trump has yet to embarrass himself in a Pokemon-related context.

Fossils: Conceptually, fossil pokemon are an A++ idea. Like, it's obviously just a ripoff of Jurassic Park, but that's fine. The idea of bringing back extinct pokemon among 'normal' modern pokemon, forming a contrast of modern and unthinkably ancient, is such a cool idea. The problem is that it's always a giant pain in the ass to get them. Either obtaining the fossils is too much of a hassle, or the fossil recreator thing is super far into the game, so I've never used a fossil pokemon in-game. And oh yeah, sure, I'll rate them as well.

Aerodactyl: Great design. I've always been sort of unclear on if all ancient pokemon were rock types, or if that's just a function of the fossil restoration machine? I guess it makes sense that there wouldn't be as many types back then, before things evolved and differentiated, and I could see rock being one of the originals. More importantly, along with Omastar and Kabutops, this is the only non-ground/rock rock-type in the game. Although, further questions are raised by the Ruins of Alph including images of Omanyte, Kabuto, and Aerodactyl in them. Those are clearly made by like an ancient civilization, but not something from dinosaur times. Pokelore is not very strong.

I don't want to imply that it's just the dialogue that makes this guy work; this VA is really good at injecting emotion into his voice, but it doesn't sound quite like a real sports announcer. Wulfric: Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I love when anime characters do this thing where they wear their jackets on their shoulders and let the sleeves hang off. It's the stupidest, most badass thing in the world, and I am 100% onboard with it. I like how he has all this exposed skin to indicate how badass he is in the cold. Primeape Goes Bananas: I actually like videos of gorillas wearing human hats, and they understand the concept of hats, so this is less stupid than it seems. It's funny that Ash even caught a Primeape, though, which is why they wrote Primeape out of the show, I think it's the first pokemon Ash loses? Because he gives it to a guy to train, then never comes back ever. Ash only catches a few varities of pokemon, those being the easily marketable cute, badass, or weird ones, the 'face' pokemon of their generations. Primeape was never the heroic type of pokemon, which has to be why they wrote it out so quickly. Primeape also doesn't really look like a primeate, so the banana pun is weak.

The Legend of Miniryu (Safari Zone Banned Episode): It's insane that one season of Pokemon has two banned episodes. Anyway, this episode is banned because one scene briefly features a realistic revolver, but it's a moment that can't be removed, so they just cut the episode. It's not an unimportant episode, too, this is where Ash catches an entire herd of Tauros. It's also important to mention how Clint Eastwood (the warden of the Safari Zone just looks like him for no reason) pulls out his gun for no reason. Ash, a ten-year-old child, asks why he should be quiet, and he just pulls out a gun and points it at his head. What a psychopath. He does this all to protect a Dratini, because back then the anime treated dragons as special and unique. Imagine the writer of this episode later learning Ash would just have a Dragonite.

Crasher Wake: Look, I'll level with you. I have always hated wrestling aesthetics. No offensive to anyone who likes wrestling, I'm fine with you enjoying it, but even as a kid, I disliked that Much Lucha cartoon just because of the aesthetics of the costumes. Crasher Wake is also just such a filler gym leader. Like in the new game, Kofu is also a water leader who's a big old guy, and he and Brassius are pure filler, whereas the others all at least have a gimmick. None are as good as Larry, though. I want a Pokemon game where you just are Larry.

Anyway, look, here's the thing. One day, robots will be good enough to imitate pokemon, and you'll buy your kid a working Jigglypuff or whatever. On that day, a Pokemon theme park where you 'catch' robot pokemon will be a great idea. Until then, nope.

I don't really know why a mafia spends his time running a gym, and I suspect GameFreak also doesn't know. I like how the anime just had him leave so Ash doesn't meet him, and Team Rocket takes over instead. Like, Giovanni is fine, but let's not pretend there's anything interesting about him as a character. All we really know about him is that he wants money, abandoned his son, and didn't feel like restarting the mafia after he lost a battle to a ten-year-old. Fantastic luck that an Italian name has the letters "gio" in it, even if that's not how it's pronounced.

Pokeball Plus: Why do I want an additional accessory to use Pokemon Go that needs to be synced to my phone when my phone can already plus Pokemon Go by itself? I watched a youtube video about how to use this, and Jesus Christ it sounds like the most complicated thing ever. I'm sure it's not that bad in practice, but this seems like the most useless accessory ever, it's like that electronic device someone made in 2011 that let you read Twitter posts, but that's all it did, and didn't even let you click links.

Pokemon Smile: I watched the youtube video advertising this app. Look, here's the thing. There is nothing fun about brushing your teeth. It is at best a really neutral experience, and more likely an unpleasant one. The nice minty smell afterward can be okay, but that's the best you can say about it. So, trying to play it up by adding pokemon into the mix is a doomed endeavor. People talk about how Sonic tries weird things with its brand, but Pokemon is just about as weird.

Smogon: You might think I'd be contemptuous of Smogon, and it's true that it has a lot of lol rulings. However, Smogon is trying to do something noble, which is to turn a game that doesn't care about balance (singles) into one that does. Why is that worse than the Smash Bros competitive scene? I'm fine with Smogon, even if it does get silly sometimes. When I played in gen 5, it took them forever to ban Genesect to ubers, which was an insane decision, it should have been banned immediately.

Pokken Tournament: I'm more lenient toward this spinoff than most, just because a Pokemon fighting game makes so much more sense than a gacha or MOBA. That said, let's check out the available fighters. Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard, Mewtwo, Blastoise, yes expected. Suicune, Gengar, Weavile? Croagunk? Decidueye? Little more interesting. Aegislash, huh? Braixen? Honestly, these are only middlingly weird ones. I'm not seeing any Mantines or Delcatties or Furfrous here. I see that instead of gym leaders, the game has "League Masters," how vague and weird.

Competitive Pokemon: You might have thought I would make fun of this, but I love it. I don't play and haven't played in years, and only played as a joke team even then, but I follow it. It's a fun little e-sport in its own way. Like, I would say that the appeal of Pokemon falls into three categories, those being cool animals, JRPG stuff, and competitive play, and this is actually the most complex of them. I guess it's sort of like way more complicated chess? But the best feeling you can have in Pokemon is predicting an opponent's attack, switching out, and annihilating them.

GS Ball: The mystery surrounding the GS Ball is really cool. It's masterfully built up, and the fact that it's the only "special" pokeball in the franchise makes it that much more interesting. I know that they planned to have it house Celebi before changing their mind and turning that into a movie, so the ultimate fate of the GS Ball (Ash gives it to a guy and never mentions it again) is a huge disappointment, but it's probably better this way. You just know that if they'd actually opened it, it would contain some boring lesser legendary like Entei.

I get the fun of this creepy unexplained mysterious ghost event happening, but the fact that it's intentional makes it less special than the hideous Lavender Town music, or Missingno.'s glitchy monstrosity. It's still a fun random little addition that makes the game that much better, but it's not Pokemon's best creepy moment by any means.

Ditto: Cool idea, cool ability that finally made it useful... but that's not what this is about, is it? The world must just be full of secret Dittos for some of these male-only pokemon to keep up their numbers. Why they didn't make a Tyrogue for Tauros and Miltank, or why they specifically decided the egg always belongs to the mother's species unless it's a Ditto, is beyond me, but it makes Ditto the secret most important competitive pokemon of all time.

Smeargle: Fine idea, but I had to deal with so many spore Smeargles back when I played that it was insane. Smeargle loses points just based on the fact that whenever you say "only X pokemon learn Y move," you always have to add "besides Smeargle" to it. I doubt this pokemon will ever return now that the dexes get pared down, but I could be wrong.

Normal Red actually uses Snorlax; Charizard Red is his Sygna Suit (it's a thing in this game where the trainers dress in clothes resembling their Pokemon to feel closer to them, as an easy excuse for a new gacha costume/Pokemon for the same trainer)

But even in-game Red used Pikachu! That was his big pokemon in GSC and in the champion tournament!

Why did Linoone, of all things, get support later on? Completely inexplible.

Raticate: Even as a kid, I hated Raticate. It's so ugly and weak-looking. That's the point! The point is for Raticate to be thrown out five-hundred times by Team Rocket members and for you to one-shot it with your Kadabra, I get it. It is designed to be unmemorable and gross, a perfect a low-level bad guy pokemon. Has a single one of these things ever been the ace pokemon of a named trainer? I can't think of one. Raticate, unfortunately, is actually useful, because it gets super fang and hyper fang, which have value in in-game gimmick runs like nuzlockes, but even with them, it's still useless competitively. So, it's like, yes, Raticate and its ilk are bad, but they are purposefully bad. They have a specific reason for being so bad that we all just need to accept and move on from.

Oinkologne: No one cares about Oinkologne at all, and no one ever will. Doesn't even get the standard Super and Hyper Fang, and it's not even a rodent. It's doing the 'gendered differences' thing like twelve years after Unfezant did, and Unfezant was like the worst bird! This is no one's favorite pokemon.

Early Route Rodent Pokemon: Much less beloved than the birds, and it's easy to see why. They aren't useful at all in a fight, so their main value to a player is if they can be HM slaves. But not only were HM slaves eventually phased out, the only one that was even good at that role was Bibarel. They're always brown, they're designed to be boring, they don't have the useful ground immunity that their flying cousins have, and their REAL purpose in the game is just to provide you with easy enemies to take down as you adventure, both in the wild and in the ownership of evil Teams. They're just enemy filler, is what I'm getting at. For our purposes, I'll be including Raticate, Furret, Sentret, Bibarel, Watchog, Diggersby, Gumshoos, Greedent, and Oinkologne.

Nonlinear Elite Four Order: It's nice to allow, but I can see the benefit of a linear order. Lance is very clearly intended to feel "above" the other Kanto Elite Four, so it makes sense for him to be last. I wonder why Gen 9 removed this option? Hassel doesn't feel "above" the others, and the one who feels like the "least" of them, Larry, is second-to-last. So, what I'm saying is that nonlinear options make sense if you're going to have a clear "strongest" Elite Four member, which they do, like, once.

Snorlax in Competitive Gen 2: Wow, that's very specific. I actually know much more about its OU role in RBY, but okay. Snorlax was simply the defining pokemon of the generation. Aside from the ubers, Snorlax is simply the strongest pokemon in the game. It learns all of the best moves and is just impossible to kill, especially with the addition of leftovers. It's funny how Snorlax was once a metagame-defining pillar.

They suffer from being in a game that is very light on plot, so they just sort of show up and get less to do than the other Teams, but even then, they're just the lamest. Noctowl: I just looked up Smogon's Noctowl entry for the most recent gen it was available in, and the entry just says "Don't use Noctowl." Noctowl isn't BAD-looking exactly, but it gives up Hoothoot's single-talon stance, the most interesting thing about it. Being the only special attacker early game bird until Kilowattrel is cool... but it had no ability to use special attacks until like gen 6 or something ridiculous. All-in-all, a terrible bird. But it does get fly, so that means it's automatically useful in-game to some degree. Hm, TVTropes is saying Noctowl is only a quasi-example of this archetype because it's not common enough? Man, TVTropes is so full of shit sometimes.

Unfezant: Did I say that Noctowl is the worst early bird? I'm writing these in order, and I'm too lazy to check. If so, I take it back. Unfezant is significantly worse than even Pidgeot, though it probably beats Noctowl. Its only purpose in life is to show off the then-new concept of gender variations. That's all it does. Female Unfezant is completely unremarkable-looking, whereas male Unfezant at least has a wattle, and yes I know that's the point I know how birds work, but it's so boring. It is absolutely the most forgettable bird; even Fearow at least has a cool name.

Silver (Rival): Here's the thing about rivals: most of them suck. The only good ones are Blue, Silver, and Nemona. Cheren is fine, but he's basically just a guy. Silver is the last rival who's actually like a rival, where he's actually aggressive and dislikes you and trying to beat you, and not just like "Well, shucks, guess I lost, great job old buddy old pal" when you win. Everyone likes the aggressive rivals more because they're more fun to take down. Silver is also the last who's really integrated into the plot in a useful way? He's the son of the previous game's villain, and his role in the story (lol pokestories) is to show someone realizing that pokemon aren't all about power, but instead love. I remember being a kid and being confused that Silver wasn't the final boss, though. When it was Lance, I thought something was wrong, it seemed so natural that the final boss would be your rival. That's another thing they've never done again after Blue. Every other rival either becomes a gym leader or just moves on to do other boring things, it's only Blue and Nemona who actually matched you and beat the champion. Wait a second, Silver's team is Sneasel/Magneton/Gengar/Crobat/Alakazam/Starter? Man, this guy is awful at team building. No wonder I beat him when I was like twelve. Blue at least has the excuse of being made by people who had no idea what they were doing, Silver doesn't even have that. Sneasel is not a strong or intimidating-enough enough pokemon to put on the rival's endgame team, that needed to be an Umbreon or something.

Talonflame: When it first came out, it was on every ****ing team ever because its ability was so busted. I remember people arguing about whether or not it counts as the Pidgeot of its gen because its typing was changed. It at least looks cool, so I'm fine with it. It lacks Staraptor's attitude, though, which is what pushes Staraptor above it.

It's not exactly offensive, but it is rude, and there must have been some non-native English speakers confused by the name. The trainer class itself is annoying because it loves throwing out Voltorbs whose only purpose is to use self-destruct faster than you can knock them out.

Kilowattrel: This thing is so much bigger than you think it is. It's bigger than humans in the game, it's ****ing huge. Anyway, as the first special attack bird besides lolnoctowl, Kilowattrel absolutely kills it. I'm not sure if it should really count as a Pidgey, since it's available much later, and the early route birds are older-gen birds and Flamigo (which is way too powerful for the early game; eventually it drops off, but Flamigo absolutely destroyed the first half of the game for me), but I'll count it anyway, it seems to fill that same thematic niche. I had actually planned not to use this pokemon, but I sort of had to because I reached the fighting Star leader, and you kind of need a special attacker to take her down, and my team up to that point was Meowscarada, Flamigo, Garganactl, Cyclizar, Annihilape, and Tinkaton. I should've replaced Cyclizar instead of Flamigo, Cyclizar is kind of awful. Anyway, Kilowattrel is an A+ pun as well.

Early Route Bird Pokemon: I've decided to just include all of them on this list with this nomination. As a concept, though, great idea. It gives each region a little bit of flavor while giving players something solid they can rely on. For our purposes, I am including Pidgeot, Noctowl, Swellow, Staraptor, Unfezant, Talonflame, Toucannon, Corviknight, and Kilowattrel. It's a little contradictory, since I'm discounting Fearow despite the fact that you get Spearow and Taillow at about the same time, and Pelipper is available much closer to Pidgey's availability, but it's my list, so whatever. I'll say this, too: I've used every single one of these pokemon in at least one in-game team except for Toucannon, so I probably like them more than average. Notably, I think even the series itself thinks this is an important archetype, since Ash uses a lot of them, but never uses a Ratatta (except the one episode where he trades for one yes I know about that).

Pidgeot: The OG. I'm willing to bet that Pidgey has been on more in-game teams that any other pokemon, including starters. It fills such a useful role of an early-game physical attacker with an immunity and access to fly... even if that's all it has going for it. When I made my gen 5 smogon troll team where I RPed as Blue and replied to all messages with "Smell ya later," Pidgeot was my lead, and the only thing it could run was Choice Scarf/Brave Bird/U-Turn/Quick Attack/Whirlwind. Pidgeot is just so terrible in terms of actual competitive usefulness, but it did score me some victories I didn't deserve, including an epic quick attack kill against a Mewtwo, and for that, I have to give it some love. Did Ash ever return for his Pidgeot? Weirdly, Pidgeot is the only bird who mixes multiple types of birds, whereas the others are all clearly one single thing (owl, swallow, etc).

Toucannon: If not for Unfezant, this would be the most forgettable early bird. You can't put 'cannon' in the name of something that has nothing to do with cannons, dammit. Jeez, and it's a slow, not-bulky pokemon with high attack? Complete trash. I like toucans, too! I could have liked this, if it had had a little more personality. It's the only early bird I've never used in-game, instead I used Braviary in Sun and Oricorio-E in Ultra Sun.

Ghost (Type): I think what sets Pokemon's type chart aside from most elemental systems is its willingness to use weird things as elements. Sure, we've got fire, water, earth/ground, and air/flying, but then we have ghost, dragon, fairy, and fighting, too. And the ghost type in particular, I think it might be the strongest type in terms of designs? Other than Gimmighoul, it doesn't have any completely embarrassing garbage mons. Another thing: it doesn't have any crapmons in terms of gameplay, either. I think the type itself is so strong that it means any pokemon, no matter its stats, will have some value, and cannot be THAT bad. Immunity to two types will do that for ya. Though why it's weak to dark is anyone's guess. Anyway, ghost was very clearly intended to be a special type in RBY, like dragon, set apart from the others in terms of both gameplay power and lore, which is why the anime initially treats ghost types as stronger than other types, and why there's only one example in the game, and only one added in GSC (same with dragon, in fact). Even now, it's still a little special compared to, say, grass.

BW2 Unique Gym Music: Like with the regional gym leader/champion music, this is just another extra mile they didn't need to go for, but did. That doesn't mean that all of the themes are good, of course... or even really any of them, but the effort being put in is good. Roxie's song actually has lyrics; is this the first use of voiced lyrics in Pokemon? I love how the American Roxie's voice is clearly a Japanese woman who can only sort of pronounce English letters. I like how Elesa's theme is super high-energy, but Elesa herself is not at all, which is funny. Clay's theme sounds almost like Donkey Kong Country music, Skyla's has lots of wind sounds, Drayden's sounds like JRPG final boss music, and Marlon's is just a chill cruise theme. I won't say they all fit perfectly, but I appreciate that extra effort.

Corviknight: Fantastic premise for a bird pokemon, and it plays in well with the British setting. Great design, actually useful... A+ job in all regards. I'll say this, though: I don't understand why Rookiedee is pure flying. I understand that they probably thought an immediate flying/steel pokemon was too powerful early game (although they later let you get Flamigo, so who knows), but why make it pure flying? There are plenty of pokemon who change types as they evolve. So odd.

It really brings home the idea that you're fighting all these faces from previous games (except Koga lol). Rare Candy: Perfectly acceptable idea, I guess. The only thing I really remember about rare candy is that when I was ten, I read on GameFAQs that leveling by rare candy produces weaker pokemon than leveling up normally. So, I got my Mewtwo to like 89 by just fighting the Elite Four a million times, went to a Pokemon tournament, and crushed a level 100 Mewtwo I know had been fed with the Missingno. glitch. I hate that tournament. I won the first two rounds, then they randomly selected kids who'd gotten that far and let them continue, because there were too many entrants.
