EDIT: Why doesn't MLS have relegation and promotion? With traditional American sports, I don't understand the lack of it either, but since football isn't one, why not follow what works everywhere else?
MLS was built to keep costs down for owners. Runaway spending was perceived as having doomed the NASL, which was quite popular in its heyday but burned out in the early 80s.

Relegation is viewed as too big a risk: for owners paying big fees to buy teams, for cities to invest in soccer-specific stadiums, and for the league to potentially see its biggest TV markets slide down the ladder.

Just to continue my hockey/soccer comparison:
NHL's current TV deal with ESPN/Turner comes out to $625 million a year - NBC's deal with the Premier League is $460 million a year:
https://nypost.com/2021/11/18/nbc-comcasts-premier-league-deal-proves-soccer-is-major-us-sport/
CBS pays another $250 million for the Champions League and Europa League:
https://prosoccerwire.usatoday.com/2022/08/19/cbs-champions-league-rights-six-year-deal-1-5-billion/
ESPN is spending $175 million on La Liga

Apple's new deal with MLS is $250 million a year

MLS regular season National games averaged 2.2 million viewers on FOX.
As the biggest MLS fan I know - this is laughably not true; that was the viewership for MLS Cup final
https://prosoccerwire.usatoday.com/2022/11/08/mls-cup-was-an-epic-and-got-tv-ratings-to-match/

The regular season average is roughly 1/10th of that
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/18/major-league-soccer-viewership-is-up-now-it-needs-networks-to-pay-more.html
For the 2021 regular season, MLS said it averaged 276,000 viewers for 31 regular-season games across ESPN channels, including ABC. Thats up from the average 233,000 viewers who consumed 39 MLS games in 2020 on ESPN platforms.

Youd need to do some major work to prove that. I think it was only recently that the MLS surpassed 1/10th of the NHLs revenues.

Granted, its the MLS, but thats still the main avenue for American and Canadian fans to exhibit their support.
Strong case to be made that MLS is the third most popular league in the US (behind the Premier League and Liga MX)

Anyways, allow me to show my work:
Since 2010, the most watched NHL game was the 2019 Game 7 between Boston and St. Louis, which drew 8.7 million viewers:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Cup_Finals_television_ratings

Several different World Cup matches (men and women) over that timeframe have eclipsed that figure, including US-Wales this past Monday
https://www.giltedgesoccer.com/most-watched-soccer-games-in-history/
https://twitter.com/thegoalkeeper/status/1595212026007105536

Sure, the World Cup is a quadrennial event (every two years though if you include women), so let's compare league play to league play:
The NHL's national broadcasts on ESPN averaged 462k viewers last year:
https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Journal/Issues/2022/05/02/Upfront/NHL-viewership.aspx
The NHLs new national broadcast deals with ESPN and Turner Sports are already paying off, and not just because the league more than doubled its annual rights revenue.
Viewership for nationally televised NHL games in the first year under the new deals was up around 18% compared to the leagues final season with NBC Sports in 2020-21. The average of 460,000 viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and TNT was the leagues highest mark since 2016-17, when NBC and NBCSN averaged 474,000. The first season under the new deals was the leagues first with a full 82-game schedule since 2018-19 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That's about on par with the Premier League, despite that league playing most of its games on weekend mornings:
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/18/major-league-soccer-viewership-is-up-now-it-needs-networks-to-pay-more.html
NBCUniversal, the parent company of CNBC, said it averaged 414,000 viewers for its English Premier League soccer package for the 2020-21 season. And so far in EPLs current season, NBC Sports said games averaged 609,000 viewers across its TV channels.

It's harder to find good numbers on Liga MX viewership, but there's reason to suspect it's larger than that of the Premier League:
https://the18.com/soccer-news/liga-mx-usa-tv-ratings-mls-epl-nbcsn-tudn-telemundo

Viewership of the Liga MX final and Champions League finals are within shouting distance of Stanley cup games (obviously, best of 7 vs one-off clouds things, but)
https://the18.com/soccer-entertainment/champions-league-final-tv-ratings-2021
https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/06/02/most-watched-champions-league-final-in-us-history/

And just for good measure, the NWSL final drew 915k viewers
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2022/11/01/nwsl-record-viewership-sponsors-vow-overinvest-despite-turmoil/10637048002/

I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that interest in soccer is higher than interest in hockey, given all of this

https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Asia-Insight/Japan-builds-case-to-dissolve-scandal-hit-Unification-Church
...On Tuesday, Japan's Ministry of Education and Culture announced the beginning of an official investigation into the Unification Church's activities, invoking its "right to question" the group under Japan's Religious Corporation Law. The announcement follows months of revelations about links between Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the church.

This is the first time the right to question a religious group has been exercised since the law was revised in 1995 following a deadly sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subway by Aum Shinrikyo, another controversial religious group. Under the law's provisions, if enough evidence of "violating the law and significantly harming public welfare" is found, the Unification Church in Japan could be dissolved, stripping the group of its "religious juridical person" status and tax benefits.

...things changed in July, when the murder of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe brought the church and its problematic activities to light.

The suspected assassin, Tetsuya Yamagami, claims he targeted Abe due to his perceived connections to the church. Yamagami's mother was later confirmed to be a church member who had donated extortionate amounts of money to the group, bankrupting her family in the process.

In the weeks and months that followed, the church and its political links dominated headlines in Japan on a near-daily basis. The government first announced its plan to use its "right to question" the group on Nov. 11, submitting questions to the Religious Corporations Council 10 days later. The request was approved immediately.

"Dissolving the church would send a strong message to society, and to similar fringe religious groups," Levi McLaughlin, an associate professor of religion and philosophy at North Carolina State University and longtime scholar of Japanese religious groups, told Nikkei Asia.

McLaughlin added that only two out of Japan's roughly 180,000 registered "religious juridical" organizations have been dissolved since the Religious Corporation Law was enacted after World War II: Aum Shinrikyo and Myokakuji, a temple group that was accused of fraud and ordered to dissolve in 2002.

The case against the Unification Church is strong. Testimonials from former members such as Ogawa have been making headlines in Japan since Abe's death. They include the story of Tatsuo Hashida, whose son burned himself to death after his mother donated extortionate amounts of money to the church.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/22/us/jails-deaths.html
Matthew Shelton was contending with diabetes and periodic substance abuse when he moved in with his sister outside Houston in order to get his life together.

Three months later, facing an old criminal charge of driving while intoxicated, he turned himself in to the Harris County Jail one day in March with a supply of the insulin he relied on to stay alive.

After two days, he told his family that no one was allowing him access to the insulin: He was trying to manage his illness by discarding the bread from the sandwiches he was served. He was alone, frightened and cold, he said.
His mother, frantic, tried repeatedly to phone the jail but could not reach anyone. We sent money for him to buy socks and ChapStick, and he never bought them, she said.

Three days later, Mr. Shelton, 28, was found dead in his cell, after having slipped into a diabetic coma.

He was one of 24 people who have died this year in the jail, located in Houston, a far higher death rate than what is reflected in the most recent statistics for jails around the country.

Houston, whose jail has reached its highest population count in over a decade, is far from the only city where jails have become more fatal. Deaths have spiked in cities across the country, including New York, Oklahoma City, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Louisville, Ky. California, Texas and Georgia have also recorded statewide increases in deaths. Covid-19 accounts for only part of the rising toll suicides and fatal overdoses have also increased in some places.

Jail officials blame a host of factors, including crowding, staff shortages, mental health issues exacerbated by the pandemic and the repurposing of beds in solitary confinement, once available to isolate violent detainees, that now must be used for quarantining the ill.

But jails have also in many cases violated minimum safety standards or failed to provide adequate medical and mental health care for their inmates, about two-thirds of whom are awaiting trial and presumed innocent.

The Houston facility was cited by the state in September for holding new arrestees in its crowded Joint Processing Center for as long as 99 hours before moving them to a permanent cell. The limit is 48 hours.

In Los Angeles, a federal judge granted an emergency order in September after the American Civil Liberties Union provided evidence that people with mental illness were being chained to furniture for days or left to sleep on concrete floors without access to toilets.

In Louisville, a woman killed herself in jail after being held for 18 hours in an attorney interview booth with no mattress, toilet or running water.

Much of the recent attention on jails has been focused on Rikers Island in New York, which is under threat of a federal takeover after suicides and frequent reports of uncontrolled violence.

But there are indications of a much wider crisis whose dimensions are not yet fully understood. The Justice Department has failed to fulfill a 2013 congressional mandate to conduct a comprehensive count of all deaths in custody, at one point acknowledging that its new system had recorded only 39 percent of deaths in local jails.

The most recent national figures available, from 2019, show that jail deaths were rising even before the pandemic. From 2000 to 2019, jail deaths per capita increased by 11 percent, to 167 per 100,000. In 2019, suicide was the leading cause of death. The number of drug- and alcohol-related deaths was the highest ever recorded.

The nations jails have little broad oversight but instead are local facilities, most commonly controlled by elected sheriffs. They held about 650,000 people last year, according to Jacob Kang-Brown of the Vera Institute for Justice, a group promoting prison reform. The jail population declined substantially at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic but has since begun to rebound, he said.

In Houston, there was another death Tuesday morning, when a 45-year-old man succumbed to injuries sustained in an assault by other jail inmates. That followed the death of a 27-year-old man who was found hanging in his cell last week. Two of the other deaths this year were suicides, including a man who was moved to a padded cell after a suicide attempt, then rammed his head repeatedly against the walls, the door and a metal grate, causing fatal injuries.

Jason Spencer, the chief of staff for Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, whose department runs the jail, said that the death rate, currently at more than 200 per 100,000 inmates, can vary widely from year to year.

At least a dozen of those who died this year were in their 20s, 30s or 40s. More than half had a history of mental illness or had been declared incompetent, according to Sarah V. Wood, the general counsel for the public defenders office.

While an autopsy attributed Mr. Sheltons death to a natural cause, diabetic ketoacidosis, his family insists that it was entirely preventable, a result of the jails failure to provide him with insulin.

This is something that didnt need to happen, his mother, Marianna Thomson, said. This is just carelessness. They didnt care.
