I've been off CE for a few years and I'm glad to see that PPP is still killing it in the weight room. You were a massive inspiration for me, and I appreciate all the lifting knowledge you've shared with CE. And shit Pinky you're turning into an inspiration for me too, when the fuck did you get so strong? Lol

I'm still pretty weak but I've been at this consistently for more or less 2 years making sure I get the fundamentals right so its been going alright!

Idk some people grow like fucking weeds. I remember reading a study where untrained men were given the same lifting program and while all saw gains, the proportion of gains were different, i.e. bottom 25 percentile saw 10% gains, median saw 30% gains, top 25 percentile saw 80% gains.

My feeling about genetics is that for people who want to be athletes or have bodybuilder level gains then genetics is everything. For people who just want to get really strong and look good naked, genetics makes things easier or harder, but isn't a dealbreaker.

My favourite example of this is a guy on reddit called MythicalStrength, who is a natural lifter with factually average genetics, but looks like this:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/8/6/AADfCWAAEVGK.jpg

How do I know he's natural with average genetics? Because he's been training like the fucking terminator for 20 years (his full blog and videos of his methodology freely available) and his powerlifting total is 1430, which is factually mediocre.

He's not even that big - 180lbs i think. Just strong and lean.

My point here is that if your goals are mediocre then you only need mediocre genetics to get there, time allowing.

I started working out a bit yesterday. I've started and gave up many, many times over the years. Just doing some petty stuff with some dumbbells. For the first time though, I didn't feel like complete crap after the workout and the next day after doing it. I actually felt good for the first time ever when I got done yesterday. I was basically this:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/1/1/AAO8B9AAEVE_.jpg

I was you for about 15 years and something changed when I hit 33. It might have been a change in priorities, but ultimately a change in what I thought training had to be was the most useful thing.

This podcast episode helped me a lot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8K7ifs2Db4

Cliffnotes:
  • consistency beats optimal every time. 3 crappy workouts a week for a year will always net significantly more gains than 6x a week for 2 months and then burnout.
  • build momentum (like a snowball down a hill) by starting out smaller and slower than you think is necessary. Figure out a level of exercise you can maintain with little to no mental energy every day of the week. For me that was basically 20 minutes of not very heavy exercise per day for 3 months to start with. As long as I did something - even if it was 15 minutes of walking or 10 minutes of yoga - that was enough to start with.
  • Make habit building the number 1 objective, long before making muscle gains.
Basically I used to go super hard and heavy and then quit and wondered why I could never get the knack of it. That was the wrong approach.

PPP, how do i get bigger forearms/wrists?

I can answer this one!

  1. Train them like any other muscle - specifically and with some sort of progressive overload. Specific wrist exercises might be wrist curls.
  2. Indirect exercises like deadlifts, rows, pullups or farmers carries. Only problem here is that you typically dont want your grip to be the point of failure for these exercises. Like presumably you row to make your back bigger, not make your wrists bigger.
  3. Move wrist exercises up the order on your program. 3 lazy sets at the end of a workout probably isn't enough.
  4. Eat, brah
  5. Bow to the genetics gods

I dont hog any of the gym equipment. If someone wants to use the equipment Im using, all they have to do is ask to hop in and Ill be cool with it.

I'll say again that his behaviour was way out of line and thats basically all there is to it, but since we're here -

most people could bust out a set or two of squats in 5 minutes, so I'd definitely be annoyed if someone had their stuff in the squat rack and they just weren't using it. Although if there was another squat rack free then no idea what his issue as.

Reality: no no, now that you've landed on the green square you have to skip two turns and roll the dice 3 times and then divide your dice score by the amount of red cards you have in your fund pile, and then place the top scoring red card into the non-fund pile but only if your gateway card begins with a vowel

Pogo_Marimo posted...
Nope. Truth be told, the chakram is incredibly sparse in the historical record and seems to almost entirely be associated with an underlying cultural and religious motivation for it's use--The earliest evidence of the chakram comes from ancient religious texts which ascribes to them magical or mythological status. Aside from that, they are extremely rare in a historical context compared to essentially any other South Asian weapon until the 16th century when Sikh's seemed to bring them back into popularity for a time. From a practicality standpoint this actually makes a lot of sense:

The chakram would be an abysmal weapon against even inexpensive types of armor like padded jackets and simple steel helms. It has neither the mass, speed, nor acute striking surface to even penetration or bludgeon through thick linen. It does not cut like a traditional bladed weapon which is pulled across a target, so it has to bite into it's target like an axe--For which it is poorly suited due to it's very even mass distribution. A soldier equiped with a comprehensive mail armor would have nothing to fear aside from extremely fortuitous throws, and even just a shield could drop that possibility to essentially zero.

What was happening in the 16th century, however? The introduction of firearms as the primary weapon of war, which pushed the balance of power away from heavily armored infantry and cavalry formations to mass groups of lightly equipped infantry with muskets. This at least made the use of chakram somewhat viable as a harassment tool, but given that references to it in the historical record seem to imply it has more of a novelty rather than a decisive battlefield tactic, it's unsurprising why it's usage did not spread much outside of the Sikh and occasional Hindu culture.

We have to remember that humans are not perfectly rational creatures and that differences in cultural touchstones like tools is not always due to some ecological or socio-economic pressure--Sometimes humans are driven by creativity to ascribe arbitrary value to a practice or item well beyond it's practical value.

Like I said, mall ninja shit

Guys it's not steroids, creatine barely does anything other than make you retain water weight

It's like a 5% strength gain based on studies, it's so cheap it's hard to say no to free gains

The fact that the effect on strength in minimal is why I'm not very motivated to take it.

Meanwhile, it directly increases DHT production, and DHT is the trigger which can cause hair loss for people with the genetic predisposition to it. So when I dig into the literature on it I see so many conflicting reports, and think...nah you know what, I don't care if my deadlift goes up 20lbs if it means there's a chance my hairline visibly recedes.

Not that I'm opposed to using creatine. It's just that I'm still gaining without it. When I get to a point where I can't make any more gains without creatine, I'll start using it again. It's been about a decade since I've used it as well.

I have this fear that if I start taking creatine my hair will start to thin and recede more quickly, and the gains from it are pretty minimal. I can't find any conclusive evidence one way or the other about how creatine affects hairloss.

Every single workout, I have to lift more weight than I did in the previous workout. In order to do that, I'm eating around 4000 calories per day.

That being said, I don't look like a fatty or anything. Hell, first thing in the morning, when I'm my most de-bloated, I usually don't have a protruding gut at all. Here's a pic I took earlier this week.
