I am extremely intelligent, and honestly, it's overrated.

"Ignorance is bliss" is kind of a truism - the smarter you are, the more cynical and bitter you tend to be (there've actually been psychological studies that prove this). Because you're more aware of the world around you and all of the myriad ways things can and do go wrong. But if you're an idiot it's a lot easier to just focus on the moment and not get hung up on stuff.

So I'd potentially be willing to straight up trade intelligence for model-level good looks. But since the poll says we'd hypothetically keep our current looks/intelligence, there's literally no downside to picking appearance.

Unless the intelligence option makes me so intelligent that I pretty much invent the cure for cancer tomorrow and parley it into a multi-billion dollar fortune. But even then I'd probably just be miserable and even more of a bastard than I am now.

Yes, that's the movie he was referencing. Though it's actually a remake of an even older movie.

The Brendan Fraser/Elizabeth Hurley movie is fairly fun if you're just looking for a bit of silly comedy.

but if he actually turned gay then he would no longer wish to get the woman and wouldnt need to worry about it anymore

Except that's not really how it works in the movie at all. Basically, when he makes the wish, he becomes the gay dude version of himself... but he still has the mind and the memories of the average schlub version of himself (which is pretty much true of every wish he makes). So he doesn't want to be gay (and arguably isn't). Because he still likes girls/the specific girl he's been chasing after the entire time.

In other words, you're vastly overthinking things. Like the sort of people who point out that movies like Back to the Future or Timecop (or Hot Tub Time Machine, or Days of Future Past, or...) are kind of horror movies because the characters we've been following through the whole movie may now have much better lives, but they don't remember any of it - and to the perspective of everyone else in the world, they've just had a neurotic breakdown and forgotten their entire lives.

Sometimes people just need to go with the flow and accept the intent of a story instead of dissecting it down to its core and reading tons of implications into it.

Or just listen to the old Mystery Science Theater 3000 theme:

Madonna was weird even before the musician made it a mononym, considering, you know, you're literally naming your daughter "Mother of God".

Then again, there's people who literally name their kids Jesus, so other people clearly don't find it as weird as I do.

I'm shocked that PO doesn't think he's too good for Reddit

The trick to Reddit is finding the non-shit subreddits.

Most of the main page ones are hot garbage, but there's plenty of smaller subreddits that have fantastic communities. If you just stick to those and avoid everything else, Reddit's probably one of the best social media sites that currently exist.

Kind of like GameFAQs in that respect. Even when this site was at its best, there were still boards I'd avoid like the plague. Same with 4chan - you can say what you like about /b/ or /pol/ (and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong), but back in the day at least (I haven't been there for a while) boards like /co/ and /tg/ were actually pretty chill, friendly, and interesting. You could have a great experience there no matter how bad some parts of the site might have been.

You can't really judge an entire site solely by the worst boards on it. There's always the chance of finding pearls even in an ocean of shit.

This.

I discovered about maybe two months ago that there's a store that literally just says "Warhammer" as opposed to "Games Workshop" near me, and I have zero motivation to ever go in.

I also had a more generic "collectibles" store near me for years (which I'm pretty sure is still open), yet I've never actually gone inside so I have no idea what they have in there. I'm assuming it's mainly just Warhammer and Magic: the Gathering.

And I used to have a game store near me years ago (which is where I used to buy all my old RP stuff for like 20 years), but that one closed like 10-15 years ago or so. But before they did they used to sell Warhammer stuff, and had a table set up where people could game.

I've always had a ton of options locally for "geek stuff". Comics, cards, gaming, etc.

a while ago, yes

This. They sent PMs to pretty much everyone who had one. We had a pretty long topic about it at the time.

They also let anyone with a space reset their name if they didn't want the stupid underscore, which is why a couple people went that route instead.

Here:

GameFAQs posted...
GameFAQs User Name Reconciliation - Coming July 7

Greetings, long time GameFAQs user!

Due to the merging of three completely different systems over the last twenty-five years (contributors, message boards, and the universal login system), users could have up to three different usernames, each with different rules and standards for how those names could be constructed. However, in the next few months, GameFAQs will be moving to a brand new authentication provider, and in the process of this change we'll be reducing the number of user names associated with an account to one. You are one of the last 4,837 users who have more than one account name, and we'd like to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Although spaces in names will no longer be allowed (as these have caused a myriad of issues for years), we are extending the possible length of a user name to 20 characters indefinitely for legacy users. We understand that for some of you this will be an imposition, but we want to make sure you get to use the user name (or names) you want on the site.

If you have the time, please visit our user name change request form and select a single name you'd like to use across the entire site (including Boards and Contributions). While you will no longer be able to use spaces, you can select any other available name up to 20 characters long as long as it meets our current naming guidelines (consisting of alphanumeric characters, numbers, dashes, and underscores). If you have a more complicated request (including splitting off or anonymizing contributions), please use that same form and provide a detailed explanation of what you want to do. We're more than happy to work with you to get your account set up the way you want, even including allowing you to take over the name of a currently existing but inactive account in some cases.

If you don't request a user name change by Thursday, July 7, we'll automatically set your name to your current site name. Even after this date, you can still request a name change to the one you'd rather have (including the 20 character restriction).

We'd like to thank you for being such a long-time member of GameFAQs, and we're excited to have had you stick around for this long. We'll be making some pretty big changes this year, including at least one big one that you just might actually like, and we hope you'll continue to stick around for the next 27 years.

betamax was utter garbage compared to vhs

Betamax was better in pretty much every way.

About the only thing VHS did better than Betamax was having longer tape times. Which became the defining factor because you could fit full movies on a VHS when you couldn't fit them on a Betamax.

Later versions of Betamax actually had longer tapes, but by then it was too late because people (and various companies/studios) had already chosen sides. And an early lead can pretty much make any tech arms race more or less inevitable (see also Blu-Ray versus HD DVD).

Zareth posted...
Doesn't matter if it was better, porn chose VHS

This is one theory (and certainly the one the porn industry tends to support), but there've been conflicting arguments that suggest porn wasn't as influential as people tend to claim it was.

That being said, porn does seem to be a huge motivator for tech in general. It certainly may have helped push adoption of the Internet in the 90s (there was a study in the mid-90s that suggested that something like 80% of Minitel (the French version of AOL) users were using it to look at porn).

Humans are horny bastards.

I just want to live in a world where everyone has to put their main identity in their signature on every new account so I don't have to put in the mental effort of solving a new mystery every couple weeks.

Any of you, if you won that huge powerball jackpot, would not take the lump sum?

When I was younger, I absolutely would have taken the annuity. Having regular income for the rest of your life is a huge boon. And you usually lost a ton of money if you take the lump sum over the annuity.

Now that I'm older, I'm more inclined to take the lump sum, partly because I have no idea how much longer I'm going to be around, and partly because there's always the option to reinvest some of the money into long-term stocks or bonds or other methods of growing it, so you can sort of get the best of both worlds if you put a little effort in.

Jen0125 posted...
I would take the lump sum. Annuity payments suck. You could die any time and the rest of your winnings are just poof. Gone.

On the one hand, if you're dead it doesn't really matter whether or not you're losing the extra money. Because you're dead.

On the other hand, if you've got heirs you really want to pass it on to, they're the ones losing out if you take an annuity over the lump sum. So lifestyle choices might play a role in that scenario.

For example, I've deliberately made the choice to never have kids, so if I was single I wouldn't give a shit where any of my assets go when I die (I'd probably leave it all to some charity or another rather than just letting the bank or government claim it, but beyond that it wouldn't be an issue if I'm losing winnings or not). But as-is I'm leaving all my assets to my long-term GF if I predecease her, because i want to make sure she's taken care of once I'm gone.

adjl posted...
I feel like it doesn't really matter what's financially optimal at that scale. You should still at least try to manage it so you don't end up blowing it all, but whether you take the lump sum or not you've still got more money than you'll ever need.

Arguably it depends on what sort of lifestyle you're planning on living.

People think "Oh, this is more than I'll ever need", but if you start buying tons of expensive clothes, multi-million dollar properties, private jets, solid gold bathtubs, and so on, you'll go through your winnings a lot faster than you realize. Especially if you become super-generous and start giving away money or buying stuff for family and friends. It's the classic rap star scenario, where they go from rags to riches to rags because they never really have a mindset for saving money (see also, MC Hammer). Even a billion is finite if you spend hard enough (or make too many bad investments).

And God help you if you're a gambling addict (which you might be, if you're playing the lottery).

But yeah, people with a better head for finances and live a bit more frugally are probably set for life even with the lump sum.

It's usually not an explicit part of any given story, but it's something that lots of people have pointed out about teleporters in general.

Unless it's direct physical transportation (like Stargate), a teleporter would have to work by disassembling you at the point of departure and building a new you from completely different molecules at the point of arrival (like Star Trek). So unless you believe in the concept of a soul and that it transmigrates from one body to another, teleportation would essentially be murdering you every time you use it, and simply creating a copy of you somewhere else.

It gets into a lot of Ship of Theseus style discussion about what actually makes a person that person,

Star Trek has touched on this very rarely (mainly in the TNG episode where Riker gets duplicated, because the transporter glitches and doesn't delete the original), and like people pointed out The Prestige plays with the idea (with him having to physically murder the original). But it's more of a thought experiment than something people tell stories about.

We do. That's why so many of us appreciated the block feature that allowed us to never have to see him even when he was here.

Many of the reasons still apply today, so you're objectively wrong.

Again, they're perfectly logical. They're just not universally applicable.

I personally think 5e D&D is the best. It's more simplistic than some of the earlier editions, which is a large part of why a lot of newer players have had an easier time getting into it (pushing its current popularity). Plus it's easy to get books for because it's still the current edition (though once One D&D starts kicking in that might get a bit more complicated).

It also avoids putting too much emphasis on combat (like 4e absolutely does, and some of the earlier editions tend to do as well). And if you avoid allowing more advanced stuff (Unearthed Arcana, anything beyond the PHB/DMG and maybe the Xanathar's Guide), it doesn't get overbloated with optional rules and way too many character options. Beginner DMs should definitely start small and try to get comfortable with the basics before they start adding more and more.

If you're willing to go totally basic, Stormwrack Isle (the recent boxed set) is apparently pretty good as a starting adventure for new players. You could potentially start with that, then slowly work your way into more original content - though you might not want to do that if you're trying to avoid "traditional fantasy", because that's very traditional fantasy.

Though you could start with Stormwrack and then segue into Curse of Strahd (which is more gothic fantasy/horror), because that's incredibly easy to do, and can be a fun fastball to throw at unsuspecting players. Or you could start with something like Stormwrack and then if you feel comfortable switch off to a completely different campaign setting afterward.
