I would say the "modern financial system" has been happening since the end of World War II. The internet changed it but we are still in the same financial era as before the internet IMO. So getting the financial system to work for you as as simple as living comfortably under it. Obviously different people will define that differently which makes things more complicated.

The reason "defending billionaires" makes people angry is something along the lines of "you will never become a billionaire yet you defend them." Ok that's probably true, even if you replace billionaire with millionaire. But you can't say "you can never make the current financial system work for you so why are you defending it" because that simply isn't true.
