And to elaborate, any good voting law should prioritize expanding rights for valid citizens (even if it means a miniscule number of bad apples slip through the cracks) versus being so restrictive that even valid voters aren't able to do so.

It's weird how culture works. Few years ago I would probably be annoyed at what I felt like was overly preachy content.

Ever since the rednecks started going crazy and over using the word "woke" I tend to overrate shows like this mostly because I dislike the other people who dislike it.

The problem is that you have to assume law enforcement is acting in good faith when dealing with minorities and given that this is Mississippi we're talking about....fat chance.

I mean, it's not particularly rare for black men to be charged with murder in incidents where it was either self-defense or, better yet, they're outright innocent. Not to mention it's easy as hell for law enforcement to pin a crime on somebody if they really wanted to.

According to the article, the original law may have been enacted at that time but it has been changed throughout the years. Sounds like people are upset there is a law on the books from a certain time period more than what the law is in the current day and time.

I'd have to see what the actual crimes that affect your voting status are to have any strong feelings on this.

The article makes a note of saying it still disproportionately disenfranchises blacks, so it's probably safe to assume the law hasn't shed its racist history.

The conservative majority of the court said the law was steeped in racism, but decided that the state had made enough changes to it over its 132-year history that its racist origins had been transcended.

"Yeah, the law is racist but we definitely fixed it, I swear!"

oh yea, in the past you'd also hear about movies whose popularity was revitalized for some reason, and had successful DVD releases sometime later on, or they might not have initially done well but became cult classics years later.

but with streaming, after the rights are owned by one (or more) company, idk if that surge in popularity would translate into monetary value for the people who created the movie.

Yeah, people would be surprised how many popular movies did poorly at the box office, but then surged in popularity when it came time for the home release.

A lot of movies, particularly smaller scale movies, are just better suited for home viewing with family or friends versus seeing in a movie theater.

Hmm, it's a take I haven't really seen before, but an interesting one nonetheless.

What I will say is that housing (and utilities associated with housing) is probably THE biggest expense most people face. I think genuine strides to provide relief to low-income individuals with high living costs could work in fighting poverty (and thus do more to curb crime than, say, over-policing)
