I mean for reference, the director of Drive has said that he considers it to be a superhero movie.

Its both? Like, the US is an unusually conservative country for a democracy. Its not nearly as conservative as its politicians are though.

7/10. A lot of the core stuff involving Raiden is REALLY goofy but it genuinely does the political intrigue and commentary (satire really) better than perhaps every other Metal Gear game. Plus at the end you kill Steve Bannon lol.

The thing that Bourne and Snake lack is the hero part, theyre definitely super. Besides, a suit is a costume, checkmate atheists.

Also Bond is 100% a superhero and if you say he isnt, youre wrong. Especially the more recent versions of the character that lean more into superheroics and less into you know, imperialism.

I dont even know if I agree with the adult vs youth thing because I feel that only applies to the US. Bond has a broader appeal in Europe, for instance.

Ethan Hunt is also a superhero.

A different way of looking at the Bond comparison is to go since 1989. There have been ten Bond movies in that time and eight (or nine counting BVS) Batman movies in that time. Bond still has the edge but not by much.

Really comic-book superhero movies were not really a thing until Superman in 1978. Both Batman and Superman had single films before then but as small films leading into TV series with the same actors. If you count Batman as starting from 1989 and Superman as starting from 1978, the rates compared to other superheroes are not that different.

America is definitely more conservative than just about every other liberal democracy on the planet, only Japan likely surpasses it there. Critically you can see this not just from the politicians that get elected but from polling on issues also. Americans are less likely to support interventionist, collectivist, and redistributive policies than people from other countries, and regularly poll behind other democracies on social issues. The cause is obvious: individualistic culture plus unusual levels of religion plus fearmongering around so-called communism ie anything but the unrestrained free market run absolutely wild.

However, America is still much to the left of its politicians. A solid 30-40% support social democratic ideals yet there are maybe 10 national politicians who share these ideals. There is obviously space for the centre-left in America but the system doesnt allow it. If Americas parties actually represented its voting blocs youd have a nationalist far-right party, a Christian interests party, a centre-right liberal party, a centre-left social democratic party and MAYBE a green party. There are quite a diverse set of political beliefs in America that are let down by its system that only gives you centre-right and far-right options.

6/10. Slightly better rating here as I think this is exactly what a plot for a somewhat more narrative-led Mario game should be. Not excessive and goofy like Sunshine or all to the side like Galaxy.

Yeah its important to remember that not everything is 4D chess. Sometimes people are just bad at stuff.

Also, on China, the recent move away from Hollywood films plus the pandemic there have really put a damper on that market especially given that studios only get 25% of the gross there while normally its about 50%. Take Warcraft for instance, which actually posted a small loss in cinemas despite making nearly 3x its budget, because it was so China-heavy. So you cant really depend on China to carry your film anymore.

Just a quick note back on the capitalism thing, there are also companies like Channel 4 which is publicly owned and not fir profit, but makes money using a market system and just funnels all its earnings back into funding projects. Not only do they make great TV but Film4 are responsible for many of the greatest films ever made.

First a bunch of HBO Max Original movies get pulled so they can be tax write-downs. Which means they are lost for good.

Then it comes out that HBO Max is going to lay off 70% of its staff and stop making scripted content. It sounds like whats left will get merged into Discovery+. So they will have effectively killed off HBO Max. It never even released in my country

I guess a small handful of the more successful shows will move to HBO proper but that is it.

Yeah this is not about one film, hence why Batgirl isnt the only project they cancelled very far into production. This is a whole studio pivot away from a certain level of film.

Which effectively makes mid-budget films even more dead than they already were.

Oh they DEFINITELY did, that was just their pitch to directors. When they meddled less they usually saw better results.

It definitely sounds like Discovery wants to totally wipe the slate clean and start over focusing purely on blockbusters. Which will be terrible for the industry overall and might not even work for them.

The thing is, a large part of WBs brand was that they were the creative-friendly studio. This also extended in theory to their DC stuff, after a false start with the whole BvS/Suicide Squad thing their pitch was that unlike Marvel their films would be director-driven. The most successful of them tended to be the ones where they let the creatives do their thing. I really dont think saying blockbusters only, also well happily cancel you after years of work is sending a great message to talent.

Yeah, the film had wrapped shooting and was months and months into post-production. It was due out this year, it had screened numerous times. Its a mid-budget film too so not going to be as VFX-heavy as the typical DC film. Obviously a lot of work to do but definitely too near the finish line to be cancelled in a normal situation.

They also have some other interesting info on the movie. Sounds like people were really liking Brendan Fraser as Firefly and JK Simmons as Gordon. A shame since this was going to be part of Frasers big comeback (he does have other projects now at least) and we got next to no Simmons Gordon in either Justice League. I think based on what we do know it probably would have been decent. No way it would have been Suicide Squad 1 bad.

More than that it definitely supports the notion that it wasnt about this film, it was more about a broader refocusing of WB. Hence why they also cancelled the Scoob sequel that was also due out this year. Also, a massive tax write-off which I believe means they can never commercially release it.

Frankly, Ill be shocked if Blue Beetle releases at all. I think theyre basically going to do to WBs current projects what Disney did to Foxs, except apparently even more severe.

So it wasnt even bad (had supposedly been testing well) but they scrapped it despite being all but finished because it wasnt a blockbuster-sized film. $90 million down the drain. What on Earth is going on at WB?

8.5/10. Despite the last act I think its really special. Also I do appreciate that Act V commits to the decision during Act IV and doesnt revisit or redo it.
