Yea lawn care is one you need to actually do or hire someone to do, or it'll be extremely expensive and time consuming to recover.

Basically:
* Cut your grass when it gets over 4 inches
* Cut your grass down to 2.5-3 inches
* Do weed and feed in the spring, summer, and fall (or hire someone to come apply it; you might be surprised to find out that the cost to hire someone may be very similar to the cost of DIY for this!)
* Don't forget to edge your mulch beds with a string trimmer, or you'll need to edge it manually next year when that clean edge disappears from neglect
* Don't forget to put down Preen prior to putting more mulch on top
* Mulch needs to be fully removed every several years; you can't keep adding mulch on top of mulch.
* Instead of mulch, replace everything with rocks and stones if you're okay with the look
* You need to aerate your lawn every couple of years
* You may need to dethatch your lawn, depending on how much thatch buildup you have. To prevent thatch buildup, minimize mulching your grass; bag it all.

I think that's it off the top of my head.

I like where your heart is, but that's not the best advice depending on the yard. This isn't me trying to flex on you...I'm just too into lawns

Warm season grass is usually fine being cut between 1-3 inches, cool season is best cut between 3.5-4.5 inches. Warm season is more forgiving to cut really low. If you're super serious and love turf, you can go under 1" or even. 5". But those guys are weird to me

Preen goes on top of mulch. Preemergent acts like a chemical cover and will disrupt new cell growth in plants. So you want it on top, especially since a lot of mulch has some weed seeds in it

Removing mulch is indeed one of the biggest things I see people neglect. I usually just take a blower and blow all the old decomposed mulch into the grass. It goes away pretty fast in the grass

Dethatching is a practice that's going away or is recommended once a decade, depending on grass. It doesn't help much and infact does a lot of disruption to the bacteria biome that decomposes old clippings. Most thatch is the stem of the grass that never really decomposes. Usually if you have this issue, sharpen your blades and mow more frequently.

Also never bag your clippings. It's free nitrogen and if you have a good mulching deck on your mower (basically any mower that can have a bagger is mulcher) it'll get taken care of.

Warm season grass will sometimes need to be scalped before the growing season starts and that's usually the only time you should consider bagging and dethatching

I touched a metal light pole when I was 5 and it had a loose connection inside. I was stuck frozen to it for almost a minute before my dad realized what was going on.
