Outback is pretty much the reason I never trust restaurants with steak. It is one of the easiest things to cook, yet somehow they either screw it up horribly or charge twice what they should for it. I would rather just spend the 10-15 minutes it takes to cook it at home.

But yea, I am pretty much always down for a bloomin onion if someone drags me there.

For a very long time, GameFAQs tried really, really hard to keep everything PG, which was another major factor in people leaving for other forums that both had more features and were less horribly restrictive, especially as their existing audience grew up (and didn't appreciate being babied like that) and new, younger users had more permissive attitudes around profanity and the like than were common in the early 90's. It's really only relatively recently that they've started being more reasonable about it, presumably because they realized how many potential users they were driving away for basically no reason.

Which is funny because this board used to have a bunch of independently hosted "spin-off" boards for various reasons (Person X want to post nudes, so they created spin-off 1, Person Y wanted to allow flaming, so they created spin-off 2, etc.). Pretty much all of those boards have since died, yet somehow this site has lived on. GameFAQs is basically the cockroach of the Internet, it will still be around when everything else dies off.

And that is my point, your Internet rarely goes down, and when it does it is very rarely long enough to warrant keeping TBs of data on hand at all times. It is like the people who stocked up on toilet paper because they thought Covid was going to completely shut down stores. You are creating a contingency for something that doesn't exist. My 6000W generator has gotten more use then a file server with all my movies stored on it would, and that generator isn't going to be powering a file server, it is going to be used for something way more important like my heater, hot water, fridge, sump pump, etc.

As for leaving the area, how many places have you gone recently where you had to wait long periods of time and didn't have free wifi? Even my DMV has that.

Disagree. I have my shows and movies on NAS and I can watch them without an internet connection, which makes them vastly superior IMO.
I always find this kind of a weird argument because downloading something implies that you have decent and reliable Internet in the first place. I might have shitty Internet, but even I can count on one hand the amount of times I have been without Internet for more than 5 minutes, and half those times I was without power as well, so I wasn't going to be watching movies anyways.

I get the argument for not streaming video games (and fully agree with it) because of latency and lag issues. However when it comes to any other media I would rather just stream than keep several hundred dollars worth of hard drives in the corner of my house sucking up power.

Toasted is basically firm up the bread a bit so that it doesn't get soggy. Like when I toast my hamburger buns, I don't even really "brown" them, I just want them firm so that the burger juice doesn't all soak in and make the burger nasty.

Anything where the bread starts flaking or becomes like charcoal is too much. That is essentially burning it.

I am really not sure what you mean by "community" in this case because it is very well known that MySpace died because Facebook was better. Everyone that was on MySpace moved to Facebook. Yes, MySpace is still around hence my mention that some people stick around "until the bitter end". However, ask anybody who used to have a MySpace page what they did after they left and the universal answer is "Went to Facebook".

Twitter is no different, it is popular now, but it has been around 15 years. It is very likely something better will replace it and people will move to that.

Whatever you think is so bad about Twitter, other people like and need. "Twitter bad" isn't a new or insightful take. We all get annoyed by Twitter sometimes. But you know that a lot of people stand to lose a lot of connection if Twitter goes down.

Not really, they will just migrate somewhere else.

IRC, AIM, MySpace, Facebook, all stuff that connected people back in the day, all stuff that people moved off of and picked different platforms. Twitter is no different.

When people say "Twitter bad" we understand it is not Twitter's fault, it is just humanity in general. Give people a platform where they don't have the ability to read their audience and cast the widest net possible and it is just going to bring out the worst in people. Twitter is just the biggest example of that currently.

Actually, Twitter employees should be happy about that, since privately held companies tend to treat their employees better then publicly traded ones. Although who knows, that is wild speculation at this point...

Hmm, now I have to wonder what explains the popularity of Python, something that still confuses me. I'm probably going to learn Java now.

I would actually try out one of the other JVM languages. Scala is my main one, and you can make some blazing fast stuff in Scala and it removes a lot of the syntactical overhead that Java has (such as using case classes which automatically generate equals, hash code, getters, and setters). Granted, it is a functional language which can take some getting used to, but if you like Golang, you will probably like Scala. It also is the basis of Spark, which is the main tool used in big data processing if you are into that stuff.

Python has its uses, it is a very good introductory language as it enforces proper code formatting. At my job, we primarily build our test suites in it. Plus, like I said it is a scripting language, so you use it for things that you would normally use perl or bash for. I wouldn't dream of using it in production code though.

I don't know for sure but I would assume C has a larger variety of 3rd party libraries. Python has so much extra functionality built into its own standard library.

Python probably has way more at this point.

But neither of them even come close to Java. Hence why I don't think anything is ever going to replace JVM based languages (Java, Kotlin, Scala, Groovy, etc.)

The big one that pops into mind is that C gives you more options for memory management than Python. Like in C, you have no problem accessing specific memory locations on your computer while in Python you are running in a virtual environment and therefore only have access to the memory that the operating system has given you.

That said, comparing C and Python is like comparing a lawn mower and a rake. They are really two different tools. Python is meant for quick, scripted programs while C is more for low level software like operating systems or hardware drivers. It is better to compare Python to something like Perl, which in that sense it is better in pretty much every conceivable way.

wolfy42 posted...
Python does not have a goto command which is a big deal for older programers/coders and can make some programs (especially simple ones) more complicated and longer.

Goto statements also became almost impossible to maintain once coding even medium sized programs became a thing. Plus you can't really reuse a lot of code that has goto statements in it, meaning you are probably duplicating a lot of what you are writing.

Considering even a "small" program can be thousands of lines of code, having to trace the flow of a couple hundred goto statements is a nightmare.

Honestly the least believable thing about Batman is Alfred's origin story.

When he was introduced, he was a 350 lb man who just showed up on Bruce's doorstep one day, and Bruce and Dick just accepted him as their butler because he could cook. Then when he discovers Bruce is Batman, he decides to become a detective. Then he goes on vacation and loses 200lbs in a weekend.

No wonder they retconned his origin to "He is the family butler" and just left it at that.

Honestly, most modern computer desks suck. I was looking for a replacement last year when work from home looked like it was going to be permanent for me, but the options are either that ugly modern look, or way too expensive (the one I really wanted cost like $2500).

I would love to have the one my dad uses. He has used it since our first computer back in 89. Only problem with it is it only supports 1 monitor. It is sad that the one I have now was the "Walmart special" back 15 years ago yet somehow supports having 2 monitors, dock, my laptop, and a printer while still having room for a beverage mouse and keyboard. Not to mention it is solid and doesn't feel like it could fall apart from a bad thought. Hell, I could even store my gaming PC on the shelf on the bottom if I had a way to use it with my dock.

At some point a credit score stops being important though.

I can understand if your score is low and you want to do bump it up, but no one is going to deny you credit that you could reasonably pay back if you have anything below 700 (which just paying my student loans got me well above that). Even less so for me since the last time anyone besides me looked at my credit score was when I bought my kitchen appliances (which if they denied me I would have just payed cash like I was prepared to, but it was a 0% APR loan so why not).

It's basically why credit card debt is such an endemic problem in the US - tons of people charge more than they can afford, and then spend years (or decades) essentially paying interest because they can't afford to pay off the principle debt.

And this is also why my credit card company hates me, because I never run a debt, and thus never pay interest.
Probably why my bank wants to raise the limit on my card all the time.

"Hey, don't you want a $10K limit?"

"Why would I want that when I barely use 10% of my current limit every month?"

What, are they thinking if I have more credit limit I am magically going to use my card to buy more then just groceries and comic books?

We wanted to get somewhere, so we started walking to wherever it was while eating our snacks. On the way, two teenage girls stopped me and asked where I got the corn from. My parents didn't notice I got stopped and kept walking, so not wanting to loose them I just pointed back the way I came from and said "over there" then walked away.

Cable is more complicated than you think. Each channel takes a cut from every cable package. Some as low as .11 cents and even lower, but some really high. I believe ESPN is the highest and it alone takes like $39 out of every cable package. So the cable bundles are set up in a way that the company doesnt go bankrupt. You imagine customizing your cable package? I want ESPN and HBO. Sure, thatll be $54. FOR ONLY TWO CHANNELS?!

Im not defending the cable packages but at the same time, Id have the same pricing structure if I owned a cable company because I have no choice. Trust me, when theres corporate greed Ill call it out like I did with this topic. But Ill also do my homework first and see if theres a legit reason why prices are the way they are.
And that is the reason cable is dying out and streaming services are becoming more popular.

No one wants to pay for a package, people don't have 100-200 channels they want to watch. They have maybe two or three. Something had to change and that is why we have streaming. Paying $20 - $40 a month for two or three streaming services is much more feasible then paying $80 a month for 150+ channels you will never touch.

Pretty sure the complaint with cable was that you couldn't customize what you have. Not that having everything cost more than streaming. You can still customize your package by just only paying for the streaming services you want. Plus most of them allow you to cancel WAY easier than cable did.

I canceled Netflix a while ago because it didn't seem worth the price I was paying anymore, but even I will admit the streaming services are still miles better then cable ever was.

I forgot cursive about 1 minute after it was taught to me. I can sign my name in it (if your want to call the squiggly lines I put a "signature"). I almost never write anything anymore, it is usually typed out.

F-Zero is too arcadey for me.
Both are extremely difficult but Wipeout is more forgiving, at least Wipeout HD on PS3 was because you could restart any race as many times as you wanted but with F-Zero you have to do the GPs all in one go :/
And you gotta play the hardest on F-Zero to unlock stuff
Also soundtrack in Wipeout is better IMO. I love techno stuff

Odd, because I always found Wipeout 64 to be a super easy game.

My F-Zero experience is limited to the SNES and one of the GBA ones (can't remember which, I think GP Legend), but I thought they were way more difficult and more interesting.

Left - 9/10. Talked to her a few times, nice lady. Relatively quiet and keeps to her self mostly.

Right - 8/10. Nice family, 4 kids and a large dog, but honestly they don't bother me too much. Think the dad works from home like me.

.......you think Breath of Fire is better than Final Fantasy. And I should take your opinions seriously why?
Dude, Breath of Fire is way better then Final Fantasy. Just a shame they only made 4 games.

And to be honest, I completely forgot about Phantasy Star as well.

Such as?
Breath of Fire (1-4), Lufia II, Suikoden, Shin Megami Tensei/Persona, the Tales series, etc.

And that is just the JRPGs, I could list a few dozen more if we include WRPGs.

My mom tried to pull the "I need money for X, I need money for Y" crap with me many many years ago and eventually I broke off all contact with her and told her that the only way I would consider talking to her again was if she told me in writing she would never ask for money from me again. It took almost a year of no contact but she eventually agreed.

After that our relationship was on pretty decent terms (it was never as good as it used to be honestly) up until she passed away.
