I only acknowledge the first two.

Terminator (1984 - )

Same as above.

Alien (1979 - )

Star Wars (1977 - )

This one, I acknowledge the first three and the first three only. Why they're labeled IV, V, and VI is a mystery for the ages.

Theocracies that want to force everyone to adopted 1600s fashion styles and naming conventions.

There are people who want to take away your rights. Some who wish to do so in the name of religion. But nobody wants to force you to wear those oh-so-scary puritan outfits which act as visible representations of regression.

Standards were different then. The 90s weren't in, "OMG, she's a child!" mode yet.

That's why Ariel and Jasmine are 16 and 15 respectively whereas all the Disney Princesses today -- at least the ones who are supposed to be attractive -- are 18.

I know this won't be a popular opinion, but Cape Fear.

I saw the remake first and I liked the original better until they went with the hokey "I'm not going to kill you -- you're going to spend the rest of your life in prison" ending. It could have been a matter of censorship, but the remake is far more satisfying in its conclusion.

Again, Iron Man was not an A-Lister starting out. He became one due to a charismatic portrayal by RDJ. Shang-Chi could have been the same had he a better actor.

Iron Man had his own cartoon series in the 90s and was a playable character in multiple Capcom games. I'm not sure I ever touched a comic featuring Iron Man, but I was still aware of who he was. I think anyone with a passing interest in heroes had heard of him before. The rest were mostly there to see a popcorn flick on a Saturday night. It was a curiosity.

I don't think you can build an ongoing franchise on Saturday night curiosities. I do commend them for what they've accomplished with Dr. Strange though.

The problem is that they've written out most of the A-list characters. They're slowly finding out that maybe it would be better to recast than to find ways to kill off or otherwise retire entire casts of characters.

You didn't watch the Eternals cartoon as a child? You didn't read Shang-Chi growing up? Chances are, those films aren't going to affect you the same way as characters with whom you already have an emotional connection.

"Brand name," in the way that companies like to believe in it, does not exist. People gravitate toward individual characters and individual content -- not just the company that produces it. If a stamp of approval were all it took, there would be no bombs and no box office under performances.

I'm a novice at comics. I still feel slighted that we never got to see Captain America turn into a werewolf or Iron Man fight the real Mandarin. I would have liked to have had the film where Tony Stark's alcoholism got the better of him and he turned the suit over to Rhodes for a while. There were still stories to be told with these characters. Now, you just have to homage them with B and C listers or leave them out altogether.

When I revisited War of the Worlds, I kept having to remind myself that the story was conceived as a criticism of western imperialism. It seems uncanny that someone could attempt to wipe people from the Earth without attempting to reason or bargain with them -- that they would go immediately to "let's kill them and take their land" -- but that has happened in human history.

On the subject of child death, look at the War on Terror. How many times have people had a dismissive "that's sad," or "that's unfortunate, but..." response to children being blown up or gunned down. It characterizes Padme very poorly that she's unconcerned with children of another culture being killed off, but it does have its precedent in the real world.
