The family dynamic in Hereditary just never worked for me. Felt like no one had any chemistry and the decisions and grief never felt real enough. Nevermind the husband/father that had pretty much no characterization except in a single conflict that felt extremely forced.

Without being able to buy into the family as a unit nothing feels particularly horrifying or interesting.

I read somewhere that in one of the early drafts, the father was actually Annie's psychiatrist and it turned into something romantic. I can see why it got cut, but I like that they carried some aspects of it over and it's reflected in his personality. Plus his noncombatative personality adds even further to dysfunctional family dynamic. The conflict is only getting worse, but never does he actually do anything to approach Annie.

In regards to the overracting I think that was intentional. Peter and Annie are both repressing their guilt. So when Annie gets called out for blaming only Peter her meltdown feels genuinely realistic and ends up being one of the scariest moments in the entire movie. Or when they try channeling Charlie, Peter is again being reminded of what happened and now he has to hear his dead sisters voice coming from his mom. I'd honestly be ugly crying too.

Yeah I think Get Out is pretty much a lock for 1st place.

It has the best of both worlds with the whole artsy vs fun debate.

I'm definitely indirectly guilty, but basically my parents (especially my Mom) were horrendous when it came to pets. They loved to get them, but stopped taking care of them once they became a 'burden.'

I'd say the biggest one I feel guilty for would be the dog my mom got me. I only spent about one week per month at my Mom's so I never really get to see my dog much to begin with. Eventually though things at my Moms gradually got worse and worse and my Dad ended up getting full custody of me. So I pretty much just abandoned my dog over there and I hate thinking about it.

How come every time I come back to Master Duel there's some new issue with bots.

I'm currently 3 for 3 on bots that just sit on the draw phase of their turn.

It's all about what we personally find interesting. I hated Arrival for example, it was beautifully shot, yet I also found it to be incredibly up its own ass and a waste of a concept.

Yet I really enjoyed Annihilation, which I've heard people describe in a similar negative light. There's not a right or wrong way to determine what a 'pretentious artsy film' even is. It all depends on what you get out of it.

Well what I think is interesting about Babadook and It Follows is that even though they have deeper themes and more interesting camerawork than a lot of the 'fun' movies they still prioritize the horror elements. As a result, not only did I find them to be the two scariest movies in the Top 10, but also a lot more enjoyable than the artsy films that I ranked lower.

Yeah I'd say the Eggers and Aster movies (as well as Girl Walks Home Alone) are the only ones I'd classify as artsy. But even Hereditary has enough classic horror tropes to drift away from it a little.

Pretty surprised Cabin couldn't crack the Top 10. Just going to have to guess the next one is Tucker and Dale.

How many of you look at reviews before watching and/or rating these films?

Definitely not before watching, or even really while ranking or thinking of my general opinions. What I will do though is look at negative reviews of I liked a film and vice versa. Understanding alternate viewpoints is pretty healthy when discussing things like film.

Guessing Busan again

Aw damn, sad to see this one go. Literally watched it three times between the start of the project and now.

One of the most tense experiences I've had watching movies, has anyone seen Blue Ruin? I heard it's also pretty good.

Out of curiosity what's everyone's favorite 2010s horror movie that didn't make the list?

I think mine might be Crawl? Although Color Out of Space and Lights Out come pretty close too

Get Out is basically the best of the films he has made (US is atrocious and I dunno how he could screw up Candyman the way he did).

Candyman wasn't really a Peele movie. He was one of three writers and one of several producers.

From what I've read about Get Out the film basically seems like a live-action political cartoon. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that, but I've seen some very vocal YouTube commenters state that the movie is "a plot-hole ridden mess of a political lecture" and also slate the film for supposedly being anti-white. Ugh.

Also TBH typically movies that center around race don't interest me a whole lot, although recent real-world events have inspired me to look into them. Although that might only relate to movies explicitly about race since I'm pretty sure I came across one YouTube channel (Extra Credits?) that did quick analyses of films and noted how my favorite movie Aliens could be interpreted as being about race in a sense since the film is basically Vietnam in space.

Maybe you should watch it instead.

Out of curiosity what did everyone think of Old? I thought it was a bit better than most of his stuff. That was one of the few instances where his concept kinda delivered imo.
