I tried it when I was on the verge of suicide several years ago. The one on one felt super disingenuous and the only group session that I went to kept getting taken over by some old lady who would take every single opportunity to make sure we all remembered that she was suicidal. To the point where I was convinced that she was just a lonely old lady who used the group to get attention. It didn't matter who was being spoken to or who was speaking. They allowed her to constantly interrupt with her "jokes" about how depressed she was or how she was jusy going to end it when she left, etc. Nobody was getting anything out of the group except her getting the attention she was craving.

I guess that's what I get for being poor and having to rely on free county services. It took over a month and three different interviews before I even got to actually see anyone and it all ended up being a waste of my time. Maybe if I had money and access to better therapists it might have provided some help for me.

It was all a bunch of bullshit so I stopped going and pulled myself out of it.

I've been disabled all my life, but I used to be in better health and have more dignified circumstances; I used to reasonably expect that I might do well for myself. Now I have no such expectations, and things have gotten worse for me in all aspects of life since late 2019. It's true that I am better off than many: I have no present or expected lack of food, housing, video games, or the internet, but prospects for improving my lot are grim and I face a large amount of stressors in my daily life that I cannot influence.

In the medium and long term, the stability of the United States seems questionable. The Supreme Court is powering up at increasing speed to strip Americans of fundamental liberties. Nobody has mentioned persons with disabilities explicitly yet, but we do tend to be on the chopping block like other marginalized folks. The global economy is in rough shape, and there is a real lack of safety nets here in the US. There is the rapid onset of climate change, which looks to be a problem humans can't or won't solve that puts the species itself in jeopardy.

On a more personal level, accidents, long term illness, and old age conspire against everyone. All those olds folks in assisted living or nursing homes used to be fit, intelligent, and independent people. Many homeless people used to be productive citizens, but they fell on hard times and couldn't get enough help (or there was no help at all). I've been disabled my whole life, but one may join the ranks of the disabled at any time by falling off a ladder, getting into a car accident, getting a mysterious disease, or getting a regular disease that leaves lingering effects (like a severe case of Long COVID).

Growing up, I always thought older and wiser people had some very wise secret they kept hidden for navigating the possibility of life sucking. Now I think it comes down to some combination of: it won't happen to me, if it happens to me I'll get over it because I'm strong or special, and it can't be that bad. In other words, denial and belief in one's own innate superiority over circumstances.

Does anyone have any advice that is actually good or meaningful for feeling hopeful about an uncertain (and quite possibly) negative future?

I always thought that was the silliest part of Christian doctrine. It doesn't matter what you do, it just matters that you believe Jesus existed, was the Son of God, and died for your sins. And you must believe this without any evidence. Also, God wants a personal relationship with you, but accomplishes this by never visiting you, never speaking to you, and doing nothing. Except maybe cool coincidences and vague feelings and hunches that you can ascribe to God if they work out?

I think the weirdest thing about having dysfunctional relatives is that nobody without them gets how big a problem it can be. You can get stuck in an imbalanced relationship you can't escape from at any age, and you can't always tell by looking. Things aren't always bad with abusive people every single day like in the movies, and some of the worst stuff can be subtle.

The only thing worse than people hating on disability and welfare is seeing disabled or poor people hate on disability and welfare. See that's different. Why didn't you lead with that? I'd be concerned too in that case. Just installing a security camera outside is no big deal on its own. But with all of that? Concerning.

But if she's that bad, then talking to her about it won't do any good, will it?
I gave what I thought were the minimum necessary details because the internet is forever even if CE purges topics, I feel self-conscious about my issues, and I can't shake the feeling my underlying anger distorts the narrative. I'm a little short on joy, empathy, and hope these days. You ought to care about family, and you ought to make allowances for people with mental or emotional difficulties. And it probably sounds as though this person is somehow indulging me by letting me live here even though I pay rent every month, but the moral reality of whose house this is more complex than the legal reality would suggest.

There are good days and bad days, good hours and bad hours, and none of what is bad is exactly consistent. Plenty of people probably think she is perfectly normal. But even during periods of normalcy, this person refuses to discuss anything. If you try, normal hour becomes the witching hour. It can go from asking weird "why" questions with strange details wrong all the way up to yelling and screaming. One time, she looked to my left and was yelling at a person who wasn't there, but was somehow the real me, and I was expected to answer for the horrible things "I" was saying to her.

LightHawKnight posted...
I mean as long as it doesnt point inside, why do you care?

EmbraceOfDeath posted...
She has the right to do that and you being against her putting up cameras outside is suspicious to say the least.
I care because I suspect she may angle them inside to watch the inside of the house, or because it may signal the start of installing cameras outside and inside of the house. This is because the people she thinks walk around the house at night looking in the windows and knocking on them are no more real than the intercom hidden behind a clock that drones on and tells her about the world, or the signals coming from the refrigerator, or the band that she thinks plays her favorite music in our basement.

This is part of a long pattern of difficult behavior, and that behavior is always somebody else's fault. Look behind the clock and find no intercom? Well, either I took it out when she wasn't around or I let in the people who did! If she installed cameras absolutely everywhere and checked the video feed and found nothing, I must have hacked the camera feed so the hidden people wouldn't show up. And later when she no longer thinks these things exist (or claims to--again, the jury is out on whether she actually has something wrong with her or not), she still gets mad and wants me to admit to something because it can't be her fault and she doesn't have problems.

Currently, I live with a female relative. She owns the house (fun story behind that for another time), but I pay rent (and in fact helped pay rent even when I didn't live here), do chores, mind my own business, and hang out with her when possible. I'm not in a position to leave and won't be for some time. This person exhibits a range of problematic behaviors that appear without consistency or regularity: inability to complete tasks, circular conversations, outbursts of meanness, endless controlling questioning, argues about conversation and problems that don't exist, and constantly changes details (if she decided to paint a room, and picked out a shade of white, she'll then demand to know why the paint isn't pink! Why don't you ever listen to me?!), and occasional threats.

One psychologist she has seen believed that she isn't actually mentally ill, but instead does this all intentionally to control people and amuse herself. She has admitted this before after some problematic episodes. But regardless, it doesn't matter either way, because she won't go to therapy and refuses to take any medications to control these symptoms.

Now, on to the topic at hand. The new thing that is bothering her is that she claims she thinks people are coming around the house knocking on the door and looking in the windows at night. Reality: we live in the middle of nowhere and nobody is doing that; nobody has ever done that. We'd previously agreed not to put up any cameras, and she had promised if she ever felt the need to that we'd discuss it and I'd help her pick out one that would be suitable.

The other day I discovered she had bought a a surveillance camera to put up outside, and that she had intended to hide it without me knowing (though she left it just sitting out for me to find?). It's not the right kind of camera for her stated purpose. Did she buy the camera and leave it there to start an argument, with no intention of using it? Is she going to put it up to watch for people? Will she angle to see inside of rooms and tell me to "get over it! Stop trying to control me!!!"? Is it to be the first of many outside? Will it be joined by others she intends to hide inside? I have no idea! Not that it matters because I'm powerless, but I do believe it is illegal in my state to have cameras looking into private areas without consent, which I don't give.

My ideal life is a quiet, relaxed, private life lived the best I can. On a scale from 1 (fine) to 10 (I morb out and cry into a pillow like a bitch), I'm usually at a 5. Now I'm at an 8. Am I overreacting given the circumstances? Should I just take it one day at a time? Nobody else in my family wants to deal with this (and they may not even know about these problems exist, because she can act like a perfectly normal person in public and on good days).

Any input--even negative input against me--I would wholly welcome.

The downsides of being a medieval peasant greatly outweight the benefits of working way fewer days. Most prominently starving to death when you have a bad harvest. Dying of diseases and infections or abcessed teeth that you would easily survive today and having your village pillaged by armies or bandits passing by are some other notable ones.

And of course, the smell.
I don't think anyone bringing this up is advocating for a return to the standard of living of medieval peasants. Rather, it is done to point out that our modern work life balance isn't the vast, luxurious improvement we are often led to believe. It's a modern invention meant to make the rich richer in spite of the improvements brought about by industrialization and automation.
