Austrias government promised taxpayers as much as 1,000 in cash rebates each and further subsidies to help buffer the effects of soaring inflation. Households and companies will receive 6 billion this year and the next in direct benefits, with an added 22 billion of help through 2026 in the form of lower taxes. This comes on top of billions of euros already pledged to counteract rising electricity and natural gas prices. Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced the new measures on Tuesday amid spreading voter discontent with his conservative Peoples Partys coalition with the Greens. Polls show the governments popularity suffering as Austrians confront a cost-of-living crisis that has picked up steam since the onset of the nearby war in Ukraine. The countrys planned levy on carbon dioxide emissions its centrepiece climate reform will be delayed until October.

Its clear these are extraordinarily difficult times, said Mr Nehammer. Were giving people back the money that inflation took away." Like many countries, Austria is grappling with inflation that has surged to its highest level in decades, partly because Russias war in Ukraine has driven up energy prices. Roughly 80 per cent of Austrias natural gas comes from Russia. Measures planned for this year included increasing a climate bonus softening the impact of the new carbon tax that will raise the price of items including petrol. The bonus will be increased to 250 per adult per year, up from 100 to 200 depending on location. It will be topped up with a separate payment, not labelled a climate bonus, also of 250 a year, the government said. Agencies

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/3525510-ocasio-cortez-accuses-democratic-nyc-council-speaker-of-movie-villain-type-of-decision-making/

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) called the recent actions of New York City Council speaker Adrienne Adams movie-villain type of decisionmaking in a social media post on Tuesday. Ocasio-Cortez posted an Instagram story to discuss what it actually looks like when politics gets dirty, accusing the speaker of taking funding away from childrens after-school programs. The mayor and the city council speaker decided that they wanted their budget right now. The budget had absolutely unconscionable cuts to education, housing services and a lot more, Ocasio-Cortez explained. How do you actually get that? Well, you create a psychological environment and a political environment that is extremely hostile to dissent, she continued, adding that the speaker took away funding the local Boys & Girls Club and their after school programs for her political gain. That is like movie-villian type of decisionmaking, right there. Like why are we bringing kids into this? she asked.

The Hill has reached out to Adams for comment. Adamss office told The New York Times that the programs in question did receive some discretionary funding, as well as other city funds. The funding in question is part of a $101 billion budget deal passed this week. More than $41 million of that funding is discretionary and controlled by Adams, according to the Times. The Boys & Girls Club wanted to receive $150,000 in city funding; however, it only got half of that, the newspaper noted.

https://news.yahoo.com/white-house-weighing-sending-americans-142853080.html

The White House is again weighing sending out gas rebate cards to American drivers, an idea they previously scrapped due to a shortage of the chips needed to manufacture and produce the cards, the Washington Post reported on Friday. The gas rebate is one of several proposals the White House is considering to provide relief for Americans facing persistently high gas prices. The nationwide average price of a gallon of regular gas surpassed $5 over the weekend, according to AAA, and in some highly-populated states, like California, the rise in gas prices is even more acute. But in addition to the chip shortage, White House officials have noted that another flaw in the proposal to send out gas rebate cards is a lack of an enforcement mechanism to ensure that recipients would actually spend the rebate money at the gas pump, the Post reported. The money for the gas rebates would also have to be appropriated by Congress, the Post noted, and getting both chambers on board with the amount of money required to provide cards to millions of American motorists could be an uphill battle. Biden has already released millions of barrels of the US' strategic oil reserve to help bolster supply, and has put pressure on the world's largest oil companies to increase supply.

But those measures have done little to abate high gas prices, highlighting the political challenges for the White House as the 2022 midterms near and voters are increasingly concerned over rising prices and dissatisfied with Biden's handling of the economy. The White House is also considering using the Defense Production Act to maintain a steady supply of the diesel fuel that truckers rely on, the Post said, and advising state governors to slash their state-level gas taxes, the Post reported, as some state governors have already done. But Biden himself has reportedly been ambivalent about some of his own administration's ideas to increase supply and bring down prices. The Post previously reported on Monday that Biden himself privately cast doubt on his own administration's plans to pivot to domestically-produced biofuels like ethanol as a way of addressing the lack of supply of oil imported from abroad. Biden, who traveled to Iowa in April to tout the plan on the advice of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, later questioned the utility of the policy and whether it would actually undermine his administration's own climate initiatives, sources told the Post.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/6/17/us-slams-offensive-comments-on-prophet-by-bjp-members-in-india

The United States has condemned remarks by Indias governing party officials about Prophet Muhammad and his wife Aisha that have sparked an uproar in the country and many Muslim-majority nations. We condemn the offensive comments made by two BJP officials and we were glad to see that the party publicly condemns those comments, State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Thursday. We regularly engage with the Indian government at senior levels on human rights concerns, including freedom of religion or belief, and we encourage India to promote respect for human rights, he said. Nupur Sharma, a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Narendra Modis Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on May 26 made televised remarks about the youngest wife of the Prophet of Islam that triggered demonstrations across the Muslim world. The remarks set off diplomatic protests not only in rival Pakistan but also in wealthy Arab states that usually enjoy close relations with India. Qatar demanded a public apology from the Indian government while the influential 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said the insults came in the context of an increasingly intense atmosphere of hatred towards Islam in India and systematic harassment of Muslims.

In damage-control mode, the BJP said it respects all religions and suspended Sharma as well as Naveen Kumar Jindal, another figure in the party who was accused of inflammatory tweets about Prophet Muhammad. However, Indian Muslims protesting against the anti-Islam remarks have seen a vicious police crackdown, as rights group Amnesty International put it, asking the government to end the excessive use of force and arbitrary detentions. Last Friday, police opened fire in the eastern city of Ranchi, killing two teenagers after demonstrators allegedly threw stones at police. Since then, homes of several people arrested or identified as protesters have been demolished with bulldozers in the state of Uttar Pradesh, which is governed by the BJPs hardline Hindu monk, Yogi Adityanath.

https://www.npr.org/2022/06/16/1105420315/ukraine-outnumbered-russia-advances-donbas-milley

Russia is advancing in eastern Ukraine by deploying its superior numbers. "The math problem is very difficult for the Ukrainians," Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition. An army gains an advantage when it concentrates more forces at a decisive point than its enemy does. In the war's early weeks, Russia scattered its forces, attacking multiple objectives at once and failing to capture Ukraine's capital, Kyiv. Russia then refocused, withdrawing some forces and placing heavier emphasis on the eastern Donbas region. Milley, President Biden's top military adviser, told NPR that Russia has massed greater numbers of combat units, as well as more artillery, than the local defenders have. Ukrainians have been urging the U.S. and its allies to supply more weapons than they already have and they too are thinking of the math problem. "The math is clear," Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak told NPR's Greg Myre this week. "We will need parity of weapons if we're going to be effective in any sort of counteroffensive."

In the NPR interview, Milley nonetheless acknowledged that Russia's larger military has been advancing in the Donbas region. "It's a fair statement to say that they're gaining ground tactically, but it's very, very slow," he said. Many Russian attacks have gained only a few hundred meters of ground before stalling. The advances are not "strategically" important, he asserted. At the news conference, he called it a "very severe battle of attrition, almost World War I-like." Attrition, of course, affects the math. Asked if Ukraine, with its smaller army and much smaller population, was running out of trained troops, Milley acknowledged the difficulty but expressed hope by using an equation. "The moral is to the physical as 3 is to 1, as the saying goes," he said. In other words, Ukrainians' higher morale will multiply their strength as they defend their homeland. Milley cited media estimates that Ukraine has raised as many as 700,000 troops, enough to greatly outnumber the original Russian invasion force. Many are not properly armed or trained, however.

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/love-sex/porn-star-warns-its-harder-27252832

A porn star has warned aspiring adult performers from following in her footsteps, and stressed there is not a lot of money to be made from starring in X-rated videos. Cherie DeVille left her physical therapy job to work in porn after an industry agent spotted her modelling work and she decided that she would "have fun banging". The 43 year-old has gone on to become one of the adult industrys biggest stars, winning industry awards for her starring roles as a MILF and garnering over 3.6million followers on Instagram. But despite her success, Cherie took the opportunity to address the dark side of porn while appearing on the No Jumper podcast, warning that it can be difficult for actors to make money after leaving the industry. We dont get a big piece of the pie if were shooting for studios, that's for sure, she said. Traditionally in adult content, unlike a lot of other entertainment, theres no residuals; you go to work, you get paid for that day of work, you get your paycheck and thats it. As well as the initial income sources being limited for porn stars, Cherie stressed that performers lifestyles can sometimes be negatively impacted by a lack of career prospects once they have retired from the spotlight.

Porn performers have a ridiculously short lifespan If you think youre going to work for like 5 years, which would be an almost miraculously long lifespan, you have to take whatever money you think youre going to make in those years and make sure that money lasts you pretty much the rest of your life, she continued. Unless youre incredibly entrepreneurial, people dont hire retired performers for the most part, at least not in high end jobs. So I think thats really something that anyone looking to get into the industry has to think about. As a result, Cherie emphasised that while it is possible to make decent money for a few years, those planning on working in the industry should carefully consider what they might hope to do after they retire from adult work. I think its statistically harder to get a job as a retired female porn star specifically than it is for a convict to get a job, she claimed. I love my job, and Id do it again, but Id discourage people from getting into it.

https://nypost.com/2022/06/07/you-now-need-to-earn-at-least-160k-a-year-to-rent-anything-in-nyc/

Earn less than six figures? Good luck scoring even a modest New York City apartment. The median ask for a rental in Manhattan has skyrocketed to $3,925 a month a staggering 31.9% year-over-year jump from April 2021 according to Douglas Ellimans latest market report. That means, in order to apply for a city apartment, a renter would need to earn $157,000 per year, under the 40 times rent rule that landlords generally require. Its a new record high for rent in the city, coming off record lows during the thick of the pandemic. The unprecedented demand for apartments in the city, as New Yorkers return to work and new work-from-homers move to NYC, has even resulted in bidding wars for studio apartments, as The Post previously reported. Meanwhile, the median New York household income was most recently just $67,046, according to the Census. So, to qualify for a Manhattan rental, you need to rake in close three times what an everyday New Yorker makes. Rents have never been this high, said Jonathan Miller, the president and CEO of Miller Samuel Inc., which complied the data, told The Post.

As we continue to see record rents being set, that also means the threshold for salary is going to rise. Broken down further, the data shows that median rent for a Manhattan studio was $2,850 a month (up 28.4% since from last year) meaning eligible tenants must make $114,000 to pass the 40 times rule. One-bedrooms jumped to $3,995 a month from just $3,000 a year ago. In Brooklyn, the median rent reached $3,048, up from $2,730 year-over-year. A studio in the citys largest borough will now set you back $2,674, meaning that, to move to Brooklyn, youll need to haul in a minimum of $106,000. But dont expect relief anytime soon. Rents are expected to rise even higher this summer, as recent graduates arrive in town for new jobs. Worse still, the inventory of new apartments is expected to tighten, with few new developments coming to market. The citys sales market isnt any better. According to a survey published by Zillow this month, the market has gotten so competitive and stressful that half of home buyers report the process made them cry at least once. But while times are tough for those not bringing in a bundle, sky-high prices are nothing new to real estate-scarred New Yorkers, who have long relied on swarms of roommates and guarantors to make the rent. Its not easy to digest, Miller said, noting that inflation is also exacerbating the crisis. But landlords want [renters] who are qualified to pay the rent. As we continue to see record rents being set, that also means the threshold for salary will rise, as the 40 times rule continues to be relied on.

SpaceX has fired at least five employees involved in circulating a letter around the company that was critical of CEO Elon Musk, two people familiar with the company told CNBC. The open letter, first reported by The Verge, was circulated and signed by an unknown number of SpaceX employees earlier this week. The letter was addressed to company executives, according to media reports, and referenced recent sexual misconduct allegations against Musk and described the billionaires public behavior as a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for SpaceX employees. Musk is the controlling shareholder of the privately held company, with his trust owning about 78% of SpaceXs voting shares as of last year. SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell recently defended Musk in light of the misconduct allegations, which were reported by Business Insider, writing in an email to employees last month that she believes the allegations to be false. The New York Times first reported the SpaceX firings.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/anders-fung-bay-area-councilman-has-skull-smashed-in-apparent-hate-crime

Two young men in hoodies allegedly dropped a cement block on the head of Bay Area city council member Anders Fung as he hiked with his family on Saturday, injuring his neck and leaving a deep gash in his skull. The attack was due to his ethnicity, he said Sunday. He is Millbrae city councils first Chinese immigrant elected official. Fund recounted the horrific attack in a Facebook post, including of the cement block with his blood on it. We went out to Lands End for a little family hiking; its a beautiful place, Fung told the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday. Then this big concrete block landed on my head and I instantly fell to the ground. The assailants then fled, but not before Fungs wife took photos of them. When his wife and two children started yelling at the men, they replied with middle fingers. When my family confronted the perpetrators demanding them to stop, one of them gave my family an obscene hand gesture, Fung wrote in the post. The men then ran off and have not been apprehended or identified. Fungs injuries included a cervical disc herniation and six metal stitches to clamp back together his scalp. Fund has represented his council since 2020. San Francisco police are investigating the incident.

Rising anti-Asian hate crimes in the San Francisco Bay area have led to a number of political moves in recent weeks. Last Tuesday, San Franciscos District Attorney Chesa Boudin was ousted in a recall vote fed by Asian American groups who protested against the reformist, who called the murder of an 84-year-old Thai immigrant the result of a temper tantrum and declined to charge the perpetrator with hate-crime charges. Were tired of having attacks on our seniors dismissed, delegitimized, ignored, the Asian Pacific Democratic Club tweeted. Its not progressive or Democratic to talk at, instead of listen to, communities of color.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10919303/Australias-energy-crisis-worsens-Anthony-Albanese-hold-emergency-meeting-Thursday.html

Australia's energy crisis has deepened, with the National Electricity Market suspended, hospitals ordered to reduce electricity use and millions of people urged not to use basic appliances, despite the freezing winter weather. Anthony Albanese and energy minister Chris Bowen will hold an emergency meeting with industry and union leaders on Thursday to discuss the growing crisis, which has been likened to the situation in 'third world countries'. The potential for mass blackouts has increased with about 1800MW of coal-fired power not operating in Queensland and 1200MW of capacity offline in the states of NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. The Tomago aluminium smelter in NSW, the country's biggest electricity user, was also forced to cut production to reduce the chance of a blackout. NSW Treasurer Matt Kean on Wednesday evening begged residents not to run dishwashers until late at night, and Sydney hospital staff were ordered to conserve power in all non-clinical settings. 'This is the result of two-and-a-half decades of policy failures by all sides of politics,' Victorian state Liberal MP Tim Smith said on Wednesday night.

'Like a third world country, we are rationing power in the two first weeks of winter.' Former Victorian Liberal Party President Michael Kroger said Australia had become 'an international laughing stock' over the crisis. 'We've got more uranium, oil, gas, gold, diamonds, whatever. We are the most ... energy rich country on the globe,' he told Sky News on Wednesday night. 'We're exploding with natural resources, yet we have an energy crisis. What a farce.' Mr Bowen said though power outages had been avoided up to now, the grid is still vulnerable to unexpected challenges. 'The system is under pressure,' he said. Liberal leader Peter Dutton also criticised the government, saying the crisis is 'completely untenable' and that businesses and families are facing huge pressure. He said Australians should not underestimate how 'precarious the energy market is right now' and warned Labor wants to move power generation to renewables 'too quickly'. NSW Liberal Senator Hollie Hughes called the crisis 'absolutely appalling', blaming Mr Bowen for power shortages across the country. 'This energy crisis has emerged since the Labor government took over and it's because, if you look at Chris Bowen he has levers in front of him though he doesn't seem to know which one to pull,' she told Sky News. Though there were no blackouts on Wednesday, the crisis is still affecting daily life in several states. Sydney hospitals were ordered to reduce their electricity use and millions of households across NSW were urged not to use their dishwashers.

https://news.yahoo.com/thousands-protest-bulldozer-justice-against-103625827.html

Protests have been erupting in many Indian cities to condemn the demolition of homes and businesses belonging to Muslims, in what critics call a growing pattern of bulldozer justice aimed at punishing activists from the minority group. On Sunday, authorities in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh rode on a bulldozer to raze the home of Javed Ahmad, who they said was connected to Muslim religious protests that turned violent last Friday. Police arrested Ahmad on Saturday. The protests were sparked by derogatory remarks about Islam and the Prophet Muhammed made recently by two spokespeople of Prime Minister Narendra Modis Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. The party suspended one of them and expelled the other, issuing a rare statement saying it strongly denounces insults of any religious personalities. Bulldozers also crushed the properties of protesters in two other cities in Uttar Pradesh last week. In April, authorities in New Delhi used bulldozers to destroy Muslim-owned shops days after communal violence in which dozens were arrested. Similar incidents have been reported in other states. The demolitions are a gross violation of constitutional norms and ethics, Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, a specialist on Hindu nationalist politics and biographer of Modi, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. On Tuesday, 12 prominent people, including former Supreme Court and High Court judges and lawyers, sent a letter to Indias chief justice urging him to hold a hearing on the demolitions, calling them illegal and a form of collective extrajudicial punishment. They accused the Uttar Pradesh government of suppressing dissent by using violence against protesters. Two people who were protesting the remarks by the governing party spokespeople died of gunshot injuries in clashes with police on Friday in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand state.

Muslims have been targeted for their food or clothing, or over inter-religious marriages. The rights groups Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have accused Modis party of looking the other way and sometimes enabling hate speech against Muslims, who comprise 14% of Indias 1.4 billion people, but are the second-largest Muslim population of any nation. Modis party denies the accusations. On Saturday, Adityanaths media adviser tweeted a photo of a bulldozer and wrote, To the rioters, remember every Friday is followed by a Saturday, suggesting there would be repercussions. His words sparked an immediate reaction, with many calling the demolitions a clear punishment. It was a threat that if you raise your voice against the government or the BJP, your house will be demolished, said Lenin Raghuvandhi of the Peoples Vigilance Committee on Human Rights.

A renter who has been documenting her apartment search in New York City has horrified TikTok users after showing the inside of a two-bedroom apartment that was listed for an eye-watering $12,000 a month. Stephanie Leigh, a fashion and lifestyle content creator, went viral earlier this month after she shared a video tour of two different units in a building located in the East Village amid soaring rental prices in the city. 'Our landlord decided to raise our rent an absurd amount because it's a condo building, and apparently they can do that. So here we are apartment hunting,' she explained at the start of the clip. 'This was a two bed, two bath in the East Village,' she said, panning the camera around the first apartment's open kitchen and living room. 'This was listed at $8,000, which is absurd. I mean, it's a nice apartment but not that nice.' While she was in the building, she attended another open house for a similar apartment just to compare the two. 'This was listed at $12,000 a month, way out of my budget, but I just thought I would go see it,' she explained. 'It was listed this high because they had a big terrace.' Leigh noted that she couldn't film the terrace because there were too many people on it at the time. 'The master bedroom and master bathroom [are] really nice, but not worth it for $12,000 in my opinion,' she added.

The video has been viewed more than 6.1 million times since it was posted on June 2, and thousands of people took to the comments to share their disbelief. 'Those prices are insane,' one person wrote, while another added, '$8,000 a month and they couldnt even sweep the floors.' 'New York is literally not worth the price,' someone else insisted. Leigh explained in a follow-up video that the $8,000-per-month apartment she had posted is 'already gone.' 'The scary part is that these apartments are flying off the market,' she said. 'Two hours after I posted the video I got an alert from Street Easy that it's in contract, and I'm like, "Are you kidding me?"' She added that she ended up losing another apartment that she liked because someone else offered an extra $1,500 a month and a two-year lease. The median rent in Manhattan hit an all-time high of $4,000 per month in May a 40 percent increase from a year ago that beat out February's high of $3,700 according to a new report from real estate brokerage firm Douglas Elliman obtained exclusively by DailyMail.com. With most New York city landlords following a standard that a renter's annual income needs to be at least 40 times the rent, those looking for apartments in Manhattan would be expected to earn at least $160,000 a year to be considered. The surge in rent in New York City comes as competition for housing soars throughout the city and landlords end special deals that lowered rent for those impacted by the pandemic, according to real estate consultant Jonathan Miller, who prepared the Elliman report.

https://news.yahoo.com/tom-hanks-says-he-could-not-play-a-gay-man-in-philadelphia-now-003155293.html

In 1994, Tom Hanks won his first of two back-to-back Oscars for his performance in Philadelphia, in which he played a gay man seeking justice after he's wrongfully terminated by his employer for having HIV. The actor explained in an interview with The New York Times Magazine published Friday that he understands why he could never play that role today. "Could a straight man do what I did in Philadelphia now? No, and rightly so," Hanks said. "The whole point of Philadelphia was don't be afraid. One of the reasons people weren't afraid of that movie is that I was playing a gay man. We're beyond that now, and I don't think people would accept the inauthenticity of a straight guy playing a gay guy. It's not a crime, it's not boohoo, that someone would say we are going to demand more of a movie in the modern realm of authenticity. Do I sound like I'm preaching? I don't mean to."

https://news.yahoo.com/filipino-family-attacked-north-hollywood-002928721.html

A Filipino family was threatened and physically attacked at a fast food drive-thru in North Hollywood, California. Nerissa Roque and her daughter, Patricia, were pulling up to a drive-thru when a Jeep allegedly bumped the back of their car. We immediately went ahead and called 911 and our dad to help us, Patricia told ABS-CBN. It transpired more after that. What started out as a minor traffic collision escalated into something more dangerous, and something we never would have expected. Patricia said they were threatened by the Jeep driver, who told them they were so Asian. He said Ill kill you, while mocking with a racist stereotypical accent, Patricia said. I thought he was going to leave but he didnt, Nerissa said. He came back and said mean words about Asians. We didnt know what to do. We were scared, especially with my daughter there. We needed help, and I called my husband. Gabriel Roque, Nerissas husband, arrived a few minutes later. The driver allegedly tried to open their car door to get to Patricia, but Gabriel intervened.

The man then punched the 60-year-old father to the ground and choked his 47-year old wife when she tried to stop him. Bystanders reportedly tried to intervene, and the police eventually responded to the scene. Gabriel was brought to a hospital after the attack. I broke my rib, Gabriel told ABS-CBN. Fifth side of the rib is broken. Even up to now, any slight pressure, if you ask me to lift something, I still couldnt do it... There are times when its hard to pull yourself up. I'm traumatized. It's different when it happens to your family, Nerissa said. What we see on TV, we dont think its going to happen but when it happens to your family, its traumatizing. And up to now, the pain... He was supposed to hit me, but I was able to avoid it. Then he hit my chest. The pain is still here, and I remember what he did. The attacker was taken into custody by the police, but his identity has not been made public due to a pending investigation, according to the Roque family. The Roxas Law firm in California stepped in as the familys pro bono attorneys. They are working to file charges against the suspect. We are dealing with a hate crime, victim rights attorney Adrian Roxas said. The Roque family were all attacked because of the color of their skin, because of their physical appearance. Once that motivation is fueled by that motivation and there were physical injuries and physical assaults, we are at the level of a hate crime.

https://abc7ny.com/asian-women-pepper-spray-hate-crime-meatpacking-district/11956627/

The NYPD is looking for a woman, in what could be a hate crime, after she was seen squirting pepper spray at a group of young Asian women on Saturday. The victims were four young women in their 20's from Queens, who have experienced anti-Asian racism, but nothing like this. A woman sitting in a public plaza in the Meatpacking District on Saturday, hurled hateful language at the young women and then blasted them with pepper spray for no reason. Three of the four victims of that attack spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News reporter Sonia Rincoln, but asked that they remain nameless and not be shown on camera. They say they were enjoying a warm Saturday afternoon catching up with friends and checking out the flower installations in the Meatpacking District. That's when a stranger, who had her back to them sitting on one of the large stones on 9th Avenue, picked an argument. "She turned around and she was like, 'you guys are trying to harass me,'" one victim said. "I said, we're not trying to bother you," another victim said. One of the victims said she even apologized to the suspect. "Like I'm sorry, I didn't intend to make you feel that way," the victim said. The group started recording when the woman unleashed a racist tirade and pulled out a can of pepper spray. "Saying like, go back to where you came from, you don't belong here," one victim said. "She pointed to an Asian bystander who was a man, we didn't know who he was, pointed at him and said take your (expletive) back to your country." "We distanced ourselves, we tried to do the right thing," another victim said. The women and at least one bystander recorded as much of the bizarre incident as they could, despite feeling the burn of the pepper spray on their faces and in their eyes. "It was so painful. I couldn't open my eyes for about 30 minutes," one victim said.

It turns out the four women attacked on Saturday may not have been the only ones. One of them later got a message from someone who said she got the same treatment from the same woman at the same location less than an hour earlier. In that case, they say the woman pepper sprayed and verbally abused three people, including a 13-year-old girl. "Learning that she did this to other people, including a minor? That's not ok. She needs to be caught," one of the victims said. They say as life-long New Yorkers, they're well aware of anti-Asian hate crimes and have had their guards up, but didn't see this coming "It's not like we haven't had racist remarks towards us growing up, but this was like the first time we've ever felt it to this physical extent," one victim said.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/14/coinbase-lays-off-18percent-as-execs-prepare-for-recession-crypto-winter.html

Coinbase is laying off almost a fifth of its workforce amid a collapse in its stock and crypto prices. The cryptocurrency exchange will cut 18% of full-time jobs, according to an email sent to employees Tuesday morning. Coinbase has roughly 5,000 full-time workers, translating to a headcount reduction of around 1,100 people. CEO Brian Armstrong pointed to a possible recession, and a need to manage Coinbases burn rate and increase efficiency. He also said the company grew too quickly during a bull market. We appear to be entering a recession after a 10+ year economic boom. A recession could lead to another crypto winter, and could last for an extended period, Armstrong said, adding that past crypto winters have resulted in a significant decline in trading activity. While its hard to predict the economy or the markets, we always plan for the worst so we can operate the business through any environment.

Coinbase had initially said it was pausing hiring. Two weeks later, the crypto giant announced that it was extending the freeze for the foreseeable future. Earlier this year, Coinbase said it planned to add 2,000 jobs across product, engineering and design. Our employee costs are too high to effectively manage this uncertain market, Armstrong said. While we tried our best to get this just right, in this case it is now clear to me that we over-hired. The news comes during a deep rout for Coinbase shares. President and chief operating officer Emilie Choi called it a very difficult decision for Coinbase but given the economic backdrop, she said it felt like the most prudent thing to do right now. Affected employees received a notification from HR. If so, the memo was sent to a personal email as Coinbase cut off access to the company systems. Armstrong called it the only practical choice given the number of employees with access to customer information, and a way to ensure not even a single person made a rash decision that harmed the business or themselves. Coinbase employees will have access to a talent hub to find new jobs in the industry, including Coinbase Ventures portfolio companies. Choi said they would still be doubling down on areas like security and compliance and may be reorienting employees to near-term revenue drivers. Coinbase joins dozens of other tech and crypto companies slamming the brakes on hiring. Crypto lender BlockFi said it was cutting 20% of its employees on Monday. Open-source tracker Layoffs.fyi estimates that more than 5,500 start-up and tech jobs have been cut in June alone.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jun/12/aoc-biden-2024-election-democrats-anxiety

The leftwing congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday refused to endorse Joe Biden for another run at the White House, adding to growing anxiety in Democratic circles over the presidents ability to run in and win the 2024 election. The powerful progressive New Yorker said she could not commit to supporting Biden during an appearance on CNNs State of the Union, saying she was more focused on trying to preserve Democrats congressional majority in Novembers midterms. Well cross that bridge when we get to it, Ocasio-Cortez said when asked directly if she would support Biden. If the president has a vision and thats something were all willing to entertain and examine when the time comes we should endorse when we get to it. Well take a look at it. Right now we need to focus on winning a majority instead of a federal presidential election. Ocasio-Cortez is a vocal member of the Democratic partys left wing, which has been pushing Biden to take executive actions to get past a congressional logjam in his agenda.

But there appears to be growing discomfort with the 79-year-old president across Democratic ranks. The New York Times reported on Saturday that dozens of frustrated Democratic officials, members of Congress and voters were doubtful Biden possessed the ability to turn around the partys fortunes. And New York magazines Intelligencer explored the issue of Bidens longevity last month, noting that: Many of the Democratic Partys biggest donors even as they pledge to back Bidens reelection in earnest have quietly started to poke around for alternatives in 2024. Biden is mired by the lowest approval ratings of his presidency and seemingly unable to solve a raft of problems facing the country from inflation to abortions rights and gun reform. Despite Democrats having control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, he has also been unable to advance signature policy objectives such as the Build Back Better Act and voting protections. Adding to the discomfort is Bidens age: he will turn 82 barely two weeks after he would be seeking re-election. The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue, David Axelrod, former president Barack Obamas chief strategist, told the New York Times.

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/jun/13/saudi-arabia-bans-pixar-lightyear-over-same-sex-kiss

Toy Story spin-off Lightyear will not be released in Saudi Arabia due to the inclusion of a same-sex kiss, the latest in a string of Hollywood films that have been banned in the Middle East over LGBTQ+ content. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the scene in question involved a space ranger called Alisha (voiced by Uzo Aduba) and her partner who greet each other with a kiss on the lips. Variety reports that Lightyear was not submitted to censors in Saudi Arabia, as it was anticipated it would not pass due to the countrys total prohibition of same-sex relationships. However, the Pixar film was submitted to censors in the comparatively more liberal United Arab Emirates, but the films licence was revoked after complaints on social media.

The scene in question had earlier triggered controversy inside the producing studio Disney, after a group of LBGTQ+ Pixar employees published a letter protesting that material containing overtly gay affection was being removed from all animated films by studio executives. The protest was provoked by internal anger at Disneys corporate stance on Floridas dont say gay bill, which saw the company agree to pause political donations after staff walkouts. Lightyears same-sex kiss was subsequently reported to have been reinstated after being cut. Lightyears problems in the Middle East are the latest in a string of difficulties faced by films containing LGBTQ+ content in the region. The 2020 Pixar film Onward was banned in Kuwait, Oman and Qatar as well Saudi Arabia after a character voiced by Lena Waithe implies she is a lesbian, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was refused release in a number of Gulf countries due to the inclusion of teenage lesbian character America Chavez (played by Xochitl Gomez). Saudi Arabia, which legalised cinemas in 2018, also banned the recent West Side Story remake as it contained a transgender character. Black Panther did achieve a screening in the country, the first following legalisation, after Disney agreed to 40 seconds of cuts including two kissing scenes.

I bought DIS at the top around $180 last year. It sucks but at least Disney doesnt seem like a zero. Some of the things mentioned in those times seemed like zeros or massive declines. OCGN for example was being pumped as the next BNTX/MRNA. After it became obvious the US already got all the vaccines they want.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/12/shangri-la-chinese-defense-minister-on-us-china-tensions-taiwan.html

Chinas defense minister accused the U.S. of smearing Beijing and said Washington is trying to hijack countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Wei Fenghe, speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, said the burden of improving the troubled U.S.-China ties lies on Washington. We request the U.S. side to stop smearing and containing China. Stop interfering in Chinas internal affairs. The bilateral relationship cannot improve unless the U.S. side can do that, he told delegates at the dialogue, Asias top defense conference. However, if you want confrontation, we will fight to the end. The two militaries should make positive efforts for a positive relationship, Wei added. Wei said U.S. President Joe Bidens new Indo-Pacific strategy leads to conflict and confrontation. The U.S. announced its Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, or IPEF, in May as part of its strategy for the region. The IPEF involves 13 countries and excludes China. It is a strategy to create conflict and confrontation to contain and encircle others, he said.

China seeks peace and stability, and is not an aggressor in the Indo-Pacific, he said, calling on the U.S. to strengthen solidarity and oppose confrontation and division. On Sunday, Wei also issued a terse warning on Taiwan, which China regards as a breakaway province that is to be reunified with the mainland, by force as a last resort. China will fight any attempts by Taiwan to declare independence to the last man, he said. We will fight at all costs and we will fight to the very end. This is the only choice for China, he said. Those who pursue Taiwanese independence in an attempt to split China will definitely come to no good end. It is Chinas Taiwan, a province of China. We will realize the reunification of Taiwan, Wei said. His speech came a day after U.S. Defense Secretary Austin accused China of provocative, destabilizing military activity close to the island.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/11/china-group-of-women-attacked-at-restaurant

Nine men have been arrested over a vicious attack on a group of women at a restaurant in northern China, in a case that prompted outrage over predatory sexual behaviour and violence against women. CCTV footage of the incident widely circulated online shows a man placing his hand on a womans back as she shares a meal with two companions at a barbecue restaurant in the city of Tangshan in Hebei province in the early hours of Friday. After the woman pushes him away, the man strikes her before others drag her outside and deal a barrage of blows as she lies on the ground. Another woman is also knocked to the floor. The video quickly went viral on Chinas internet and renewed a debate about sexual harassment and gender-based violence in a country where the conversation around womens rights has grown in recent years despite pressure from a patriarchal society, internet censorship and patchy legal support. Internet censors blocked keywords linked to the MeToo movement after a wave of women accused university professors of sexual harassment in 2018. Campaigners also say domestic abuse remains pervasive and under-reported.

The attack has shocked China and prompted many to ask why this has happened. The reason that these men felt they could freely assault the woman for rejecting their harassment is because so many men in the past have gone unpunished by the authorities for doing the same, said Yaqiu Wang, a senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch. On the social media site Weibo, the related hashtag has generated more than half a billion views and tens of thousands of comments on Saturday, where many users, particularly women, urged the authorities to crack down on gender-based violence. All of this could happen to me, could happen to any of us, said one commenter in a post liked more than 100,000 times. How is this sort of thing still happening in 2022? wrote another. Please give them criminal sentences, and dont let any of them get away. China Womens News, published by the All-China Womens Federation, said in a commentary on Saturday that there can only, and must only, be zero tolerance for such vicious cases of serious violations of womens rights and interests.

https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/lower-east-side-subway-stabbing/

The search is on for a man who assaulted and stabbed a 19-year-old woman as she walked into a subway station on the Lower East Side on Friday. She spoke exclusively to CBS2's Ali Bauman about the random attack. The 19-year-old victim was heading down into the subway with a girlfriend when she noticed a man following them. He walked away, and she thought they were safe until the man grabbed her from behind. "I was, like, really stuck. I didn't really have anywhere to move," she said. She has scars across her neck and a stab wound in her back. She did not want to be identified because her attacker has not been caught. It happened early Friday morning at the Delancey Street subway station. "I'm walking down the stairs. My friend is a little bit ahead of me, and he just immediately puts me in a chokehold, like, from behind. I had no clue what was going on. I thought, like, was my friend was pranking me? So I was calling, like, 'Who is this? Who's holding me?' And then he wasn't loosening his grip," the victim said. She says the man pulled out a small knife and was digging it into her throat. "My friend turns around, notices I'm not with her, and turns around and just screams like, 'Oh my god,' and he lets go and just punctures my back and then runs off," she said.

She called 911 but says it took police about 40 minutes to arrive. She fears since he got away, he could strike again. "He went for me, and I was with somebody, so I feel scared for people who are just alone," the victim said. The latest NYPD data shows crime in transit is up 53.6% so far this year compared to last. Just a few hours after this attack, police say a 62-year-old man was slashed and stabbed in the face inside the Queensboro Plaza subway station. Police are also looking for a man who they say beat up a 27-year-old man on an MTA bus in Brooklyn last weekend. "The police need to be focused on imminent threats of violence," said Danny Pearlstein, of the Riders Alliance. He says police in the transit system help, but that isn't the only solution to a safer commute. "The subway doesn't run frequently enough. People are left waiting for long periods of time on platforms. The governor needs to run more trains," he said. The victim told CBS2 she does not know the suspect's motive and that he didn't try to steal anything from her.

More than 360,000 people left California in 2021, in what some are calling The California Exodus many leaving for states like Texas, Arizona and Washington. And a rising number of former Californians are migrating out of the country altogether and are instead heading south of the border. Many are seeking a more relaxed and affordable lifestyle in Mexico. California continuously ranks high as one of the countrys most expensive states to live in. The median asking price for a home in California is about $797,470 only 25% of the states households could afford that in the fourth quarter of 2021. Californias population growth has been declining for more than 30 years now. But thanks to the rise in remote work due to the Covid-19 pandemic, those trends have accelerated. The ability to work anywhere has 62% of Americans considering moving to a new country. However, there are some setbacks. Many critics argue that Americans are driving up the cost of housing for locals and pricing them out of the market.

A former NYPD officer who twice was accused of brutality is going to prison in connection to an unrelated crime: firing an illegal semiautomatic handgun into the Atlantic Ocean while he was drinking alcohol on a beach on Long Island. On Thursday, Judge Robert Bogle sentenced David Afanador, 41, of Long Beach, to between 16 months and four years in prison. Afanador had pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal possession of a firearm, a felony, back in March. On March 21, 2021, Long Beach police officers responding to a call of shots fired near Franklin Boulevard and Ocean Beach Park came upon Afanador and three other people on the beach, the Nassau County District Attorney's Office said. Afanador was holding an open can of hard seltzer and had a 9mm Beretta pistol in a holster and two loaded magazines, police said. Cops found seven spent 9mm shell casings in the sand near him, according to the DA. Afanador was off-duty and wasn't authorized to carry a firearm because of a pending criminal case for allegedly putting a Black man in a banned chokehold while responding to a call on the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach, according to the NYPD and the DA.

"This defendant knew he could not legally possess a firearm, but still made the decision to drink with friends on a beach and recklessly fire a loaded gun several times into the ocean," District Attorney Anne Donnelly said in a statement. "Afanador's behavior was foolish, dangerous, and illegal. We hope that his sentence sends a message to anyone thinking about illegally discharging a weapon in Nassau County in the name of fun." In 2016, Affandor was acquitted of pistol-whipping a teenager during a drug bust. He resigned from the NYPD shortly after his arrest in Long Beach. He had been with the department for more than 16 years.

A viral TikTok posted by a woman shows how unsafe people, especially women and Asian people, feel riding New Yorks public transit as of late. TikToker @gold.a.star posted the TikTok on May 26, and as of Friday, it has over 417,200 views. The clip captured an incident on the Long Island Rail Road, you can see authorities and riders standing around the train. So there was a man wielding a hammer on the LIRR today, her text overlay alleges, He yelled at young women and physically taunted them. The overlay text continued: Transit isnt safe. NYC isnt safe. After Uvalde were all afraid. She later specified in the comments that this train was the Babylon/Far Rockaway line to Penn station. In the comments, Golda wrote that this event happened two days after the devastating mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 children and two teachers dead. No one wanted to move because we were scared. The conductor was freaking out, Golda shared.

In the comments, other people chimed in with how public transit has been making them feel terrified. I live in nyc and take the train daily and its scary but I always make sure I carry my pepper spray and other stuff its sad that it has to be like, commented one TikToker. I was harassed by a homeless man Who followed me into the train and started verbally attacking me. Luckily I was able to escape but its scary in NY, wrote another. Im from nyc too the subway has been so scary lately, commented a third. Their fear is backed by numbers too. Experts say crime, ranging from assault to harassment, on New York transit increased by 14% from 2020 to 2021. Detectives are looking for a group of thieves who robbed several people in New York City over the course of eight days. In each incident, the suspects pulled up in a dark-colored vehicle, took out firearms and took their victims property before fleeing the scene in the vehicle they arrived in. The suspects often struck multiple times in one day, reaching a total of 26 robberies reported. The suspects struck four times on May 26, starting at 12;15 a.m. at the corner of Wallace Avenue and Mace Avenue in the Bronx. At this time, the suspects pulled up in a Black 2013 four door Volkswagen Passat and stopped a 42-year-old man. Three suspects jumped out and stole the victims Gucci bag and $120 in cash before fleeing the scene. Later that morning, the suspects would rob three more men in the Bronx and stealing over $400 in cash before fleeing to parts unknown.

The suspects had a particularly busy day on May 29, robbing 10 people over the course of six hours throughout the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Starting at 4:40 a.m. and finishing at 10 a.m., the suspects forcibly took several wallets, well over $700 in cash and other property from ten separate individuals, with some of the robberies taking place just minutes apart. The next day, May 30, the suspects robbed four more people in the Bronx between 1 a.m. and 5:55 a.m. During this time, the suspects stole property including wallets, cellphones and cash before fleeing the scene in a dark-colored SUV. May 31 proved to be another busy day for the suspects, who stole from seven different people in the Bronx over the course of the morning. Between 3:13 a.m. and 6 a.m., the suspects stole property including a metal chain, several cellphones and wallets. In two instances, at 5:08 a.m. in front of 920 East 173 Street and at 5:30 a.m. in front of 920 Baychester Avenue, the suspects ended up leaving empty-handed because the victims had no property to steal. Finally, at 7:30 a.m. on June 2, a 49-year-old man was at the corner of Morrison Avenue and East 174 Street in the Bronx when the suspects drove up in a Black Mercedes Benz sedan, and stopped him. Two suspects got out of the car and took the victims wallet and $20 in cash. The suspects are described as adult men with dark complexions.
