Yeah, it was a long meandering slog for the most part. Best bits were the genuinely tense scenes at the ranch, and of course the ending. Some other entertaining bits and moments of great acting scattered throughout but the actual story never actually amounted to anything.

Not really. Kendall faced no consequences, other than having to lick his dad's boots, which is how the season started. The dead kid and his family are never mentioned again other than a brief scene in season 2. They took a dramatic event and used it to maintain the status quo instead of throwing things into Flux. Which is a decent subversion. As the poster above mentioned, the show is about the characters. It still rules, despite it taking 2 seasons for anything meaningful to happen plotwise.
