The problem if you make Daylight Savings Time permanent is we end up with sunrise at almost 9 am in winter. On the other hand, if you got rid of DST, you'd have sunrise at 4 am in the summer. It's a no-win situation.

I'd generally prefer dawn to come earlier in summer rather than later in winter, mainly because winter is already a cold dark miserable time when depression is soaring, so getting up early to go to work in total darkness sucks more than dawn just coming really early in summer.

I might feel differently if I lived somewhere where roosters were crowing at dawn, or where it's so hot that it would mean the day would already be unbearably hot by like 8am, but I don't.

These days, pretty much all the time, for nearly every franchise or form of media I've ever loved.

Is it just me or does 20 mins sound like the absolute min you have to drive anywhere at this point for anything, like, even a taco?

Depends on where you live.

There are places in the US where you have to drive like 40 minutes just to go to the grocery store. There are also places where literally everything you can possibly imagine needing or wanting is within a 15 minute drive.

This used to come up in the Geek topics, when Wave mentioned he had to drive like 2 hours to go to the nearest movie theater, and I'd point that I couldn't imagine being willing to drive more than 2 hours for anything less than life-saving surgery.

I can get to my local movie theater in about 15 minutes. I can get to my grocery store in about 10. I can get to my local convenience store, gas station, or McDonalds in about 5. I rarely drive more than 20 minutes for any shopping, unless I'm going somewhere specific and specialty-based.

Also the vote was unanimous.

It's pretty much been inevitable for years. The whole point of Bush passing the law that changed the difference from being 6/6 to 8/4 was specifically meant to get people used to the idea of eventually making it a permanent thing without the twice-yearly shift.

The idea is to get people used to the idea of the "off" period being shorter and shorter, until you do away with it entirely. And if you do it over a long enough period of time, people will adjust and are less likely to complain as much. See the metaphor about the frog in a pot of boiling water.

It's still going to cause confusion as long as other nations continue to use it though (and a lot do), at least online (for things where time calculations matter). And Arizona's still going to be a mess unless they realign as well (because they've got their own weird thing going on right now).

I agree that even a Souls-like game needs a pause function. Life sometimes happens, I need the game to stop now

I consider pause and save anywhere features to be more or less mandatory quality of life features for adults who actually have lives.

Losing a half-hour or more of progress because you didn't have time to waste slogging through another 10-20 minutes to get to the next save point or autosave is the sort of thing that can discourage people from wanting to play your game at all. If having to stop to answer your phone, answer your doorbell, or try and prevent your pet from shitting on the rug or your kids from murdering each other or the like leads to you being punished in-game, you're probably going to assume whoever made that game is an asshole.

I don't really give a shit if the developer feels like it somehow invalidates their vision of what the game should be or is annoyed because they feel like save-scumming is "cheating". Fuck you, your game is detracting from my life. There should always be a means of insta-stopping the game and saving for later if something immediate comes up to distract from it.

There's some justification if the game is online multiplayer, but in offline single player games I acknowledge no valid excuse whatsoever.

That was actually a lie he told the publisher. He told them it came from aliens so it would seem "unique" and they'd publish it (since they'd already rejected it two or three times by that point). He's explicitly said in interviews he never had any intention of ever having aliens in it, and he was just lying about it.

The origin of the zombie virus in Walking Dead is the same cause of the zombies in Night of the Living Dead (which was the direct original inspiration). Namely, there is no known cause, because it's not important to the story, and the unknown is scarier than knowing. Whatever you can personally imagine will be more frightening or interesting than anything Kirkman could come up with and tell you.

Well, there's more to health than just weight. If you're a sort of withered thin where most of your muscle mass has kind of atrophied, you're much worse off than you'd be if you weighed more but it was muscle mass.

Ideally, when you drop weight, you want to be losing fat, but not muscle. People who lose weight by just sort of stopping eating tend to wind up unhealthy because they lose more muscle than fat.

Actually I had a rather strong "are they gay?" reaction the first couple times I read the books in the 90s as a teenager.

I never got that from the books, though I definitely got it from the movies.

But part of that also plays into my complaint that people today seem psychologically incapable of comprehending the idea of powerful platonic friendship. The moment characters in any show or movie seem to have strong feelings for each other, people come out of the woodwork to talk about the sexual subtext or imagine them fucking.

I'm not sure whether the rise of shipping culture is more a symptom or a cause, but it seems a given these days that the baseline assumption is that romantic affection is the only affection that exists. Which might even tie into the idea of why incest porn is becoming so popular lately - we're no longer capable of viewing relationships through the lens of familiar love, platonic love, communal love, or anything other than romantic or erotic love. All affection implies romance or lust, no exceptions.

Granted, the subtext is certainly there in any number of stories written over the years, going waaay back, so the idea of romantic love being hidden behind the facade of another type isn't a new thing, but people today seem to read it into nearly everything. It must be frustrating to be a writer today and be unable to write a story with two characters who have a deep and abiding friendship and love for each other without tons of fans online asking when they're going to fuck.

wpot posted...
As I grew up that faded as I read more books featuring olde English servants/friendships, though: a truly devoted old world servant had some characteristics we would associate with lovers today.

It gets even more complicated if you start going back into ancient sources (like, say, Homer or other Greek stories), where you have characters who may be presented as friends who also casually have sex, because a number of past cultures didn't necessarily equate sex with romance. Like how Japan tended to value the archetype of same-sex sexual camaraderie even while being strongly homophobic in general (going back to at least the samurai era), or how Romans would encourage old man/young boy pairings as a form of socialization but had a strong disdain for actual homosexual relationships.

We have a tendency to try and view all past media and history though the lens of our own current culture and mores, but that can lead to a lot of false assumptions. People in the past didn't see the world the way we do, and ignoring their cultural context kind of changes the reality of whatever you're looking at.

I haven't really seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched Nintendo products for like 20 years now, so I wouldn't even notice the difference. You could have completely erased them from existence in 2000 and the last two decades of my life would barely change at all.

Meanwhile, my girlfriend is Asian. Granted, she's South Asian (by descent, at least) as opposed to East Asian, but that's the problem with that descriptor - there's a lot of Asia. Without terms like the now frowned upon "Oriental" to help distinguish between regions, "Asian" alone also includes most of Russia, India, and the Middle East (and not just China/Japan/Korea/etc). About 3/5ths of the Earth's population is Asian (and that's just counting Asians IN Asia, not people of Asian descent in other places).

The only quibble I have with Sam is the persistent loyal servant (as opposed to true "friend") thing. But he's still a greatest ever tier character.

Well, it's worth keeping in mind that Sam is Frodo's servant. And a hereditary servant to boot - his father was Bag End's gardener before him.

To some degree their relationship is a product of the era in which the books were written. Tolkien was basically writing about England when he was writing about hobbits and The Shire (and more specifically, the sort of upper-class English countryside culture of the late 1800s/early 1900s). And the relationship between Frodo and Sam was originally written to reflect the sort of relationship an upper class British man might have with his loyal personal servant.

It's closer to the relationship you see between the social classes in shows like Downton Abbey or Upstairs Downstairs. Or more accurately something like Jeeves and Wooster. Where the bond is one of both loyalty and friendship, but there's always that underlying divide that separates the two. Not a friendship of equals, but one where one half of the pair is inherently seen (by both) to be superior to the other (but which can be subverted if the "inferior" half of the pair is arguably more capable - again, a Jeeves and Wooster sort of scenario, or even a Holmes/Watson pairing).

It's more the Peter Jackson live-action films that kind of underplay that aspect more in favor of just making them closer friends (or more, depending on how you want to read the subtext) and more or less equals. But that's mainly because the audience has changed and the culture it was reflecting isn't so much of a thing these days.

I'd argue that the live-action films also tend to make Aragon seem much more sympathetic and awesome than the books do. And they humanize Gandalf a bit more. And make the Merry/Pippin interactions feel more like friendship than merely kinship. Tolkien was very much writing from an English tradition of stiff-upper-lips and refraining from showing emotion or excessive affection between friends, whereas the movie is showing a more modern style of social interaction (which is part of what helps people relate to/like those characters more).

Sam just because he's from the series I actually like, as opposed to the one I don't.

But even beyond that, Sam's generally awesome (and doubly so when played by Sean Astin), so he's the no-brainer choice regardless.

Hell, I'd pick Samwell Tarly over Ron as well.

To be completely honest I don't think Rowling had a very good grasp of how male friendships work. (OK, OK, "traditional" male friendships)

If we're going to be completely honest, it seems like Rowling doesn't have a very good grasp of a lot of things.
