Actually I think it points more to it being not. Neither the man nor Theo said the "star fall" itself was Sauron. Just that it means he's near. An Istari coming to stop him because he's near would fit too. The Istari coming in a meteor would then itself be signaling that Sauron is near.

Tbf, DiCaprio seems like a picky dude who has the luxury of picking whatever the fuck he wants. He's only done like 15-20 movies since Titanic and 3 since Wolf.

Gandalf is the logical answer, as he was an angelic being sent to Middle Earth around this time, who had famously good relations with Hobbits.

Which is exactly why it's probably not him, since it seems like they're being deliberately vague on the matter.

The whole dead fireflies thing is weird and I'm not sure what to make of it. It doesn't really make any sense for this character to be Sauron (though I kind of love how the show is playing around with the idea of "who is Sauron" so much, it was a great choice for such a mysterious character famed for his deceit).

If I had to throw out a guess it's either Saruman or Gandalf, maybe leaning Saruman. It could also be the Balrog.

Gandalf came in the Third Age. Sauron doesn't make sense because it seems like a pretty risky thing to do with everybody watching the skies.

Now that we know how the timeline is working out, it's becoming a bit more apparent it's likely gonna be the second Blue Wizard and that he's probably looking for his buddy, the first. They arrived in the same year the One Ring was forged.

Besides a few character and place names, pretty much nothing is drawn from the source material, this is all a brand new story. Im not saying that makes the show bad, but trying to predict what will happen in the show based off what happens in the established lore is pointless

Aside from the timeline changes, I'm not seeing too much deviation. To be fair, Amazon wanted to do a show that was set over the thousands of years of the Second Age, but they had to change their plans because then only Galadriel and Elrond would be the same and they'd have to constantly get new characters every season and lots of characters wouldn't be introduced for several seasons.

There's no confirmation it's a different continuity. I mean, Edward Norton became Mark Ruffalo in the MCU. I don't think we're supposed to assume Elrond transforms into Hugo Weaving.

At the same time, the only thing that's the same between both is how Sauron looks. So there's very little proof they are the same as well.

Sam can't leap beyond his birth in 1953. He leaped to 1862 because his ancestor had very similar genes. He also leaped to 1945 because he got swapped with Al. Those are the only two instances. He also leaped into 1953 before his birth a few times. But he was still a fetus.

I'm not sure. I think this was it. There isn't much else to show since Phase 5 is pretty far out. They showed a few trailers that were not immediately released online.

That's a different stream. The Marvel panel started at 2 PM EST right after the Lucasfilm one.
