See, we shouldn't approach *everything* with common sense or logical consistency. Sometimes there are factors to be considered which tip the scales a bit.

As mentioned earlier, we don't live in an idealized society. There are people fighting for rights they damn well deserve, who are being held down by people who lack common sense or logical consistency.

It's great to be an ally and throw your support behind those who are experiencing injustice, but that doesn't mean that your opinion on issues which directly affect certain marginalized groups should be treated as equal to those affected.

The opinions of those directly affected should hold greater weight under certain conditions. Abortion is one of those issues which should be treated this way. Women are directly affected. Even fathers, and I say this as a father myself who loves his children, are not directly affected. My body was under zero peril from my wife's pregnancies.

That Dr Spock logic doesn't fly when people's rights are being stripped away. Maybe someday we will live in some logical utopia where science is placed firmly above faith, but this ain't that timeline. Too many religious assholes have sway over government officials who can limit the freedoms of certain people. And in those times, the voices of the oppressed should rise above the noise of the masses and be heard, above all others.

I got a lot of shit going on right now and this topic is moving too fast for me, but I'll try to lay out an answer that I hope is satisfactory. Bear with me though I may not be able to respond for a couple hours.

By "their" bodies, do you mean them as an individual or them as a collective (i.e. all women)?

My personal position on this is that this shouldn't be legislated at all. The SC should have no say in the matter. The matter of abortion should be between the individual woman and her doctor. Her husband/spouse/baby daddy csn certainly chime in, but ultimately it's her body, her decision.

Unfortunately, this issue has been muddled by religious half-wits who want to argue that a clump of cells is a human being with rights which deserves to be birthed regardless of the pregnant woman's wishes and with no regard to her well-being, so here we are.

I alluded to this earlier, but in an ideal world we would have some sort of system of Supreme Court sub-panels tailored to certain groups (women, men, indigenous peoples, ethnic groups, etc) which could handle delicate matters like this.

Our current system of representation through elected officials, while still a good system of government, is not without its flaws.

It's impossible to legislate to every individual, but legislating to a group as plentiful as all women should be manageable, with allowing for women to speak and ultimately decide for themselves. Some sort of chamber of specialized elected officials could work, but I'll readily admit that it's not a realistic solution, especially in the short term.

I don't know that I was implying that men's opinions are wholly less than women's, only that they should be weighted more in favor of women when it comes to issues of female reproductive health.

If it came across that I was completely dismissing men's opinions I apologize. I thought I had spelled that out that, imo, men are perfectly free to weigh in on the issue, but that more consideration should be granted to women on this issue.

Of course everyone is entitled to an opinion. But there's a difference between holding an opinion like "apple juice is better than orange juice" and holding an opinion that women shouldn't be allowed to make decisions regarding their reproductive health.

Having a less valid opinion is not a wholesale dismissal of said opinion. Put your ego on pause for a moment and absorb that.

No amount of education or study can subvert the lived experience.

Someone who has extensively studied something, even earned a degree on the matter, should certainly have a certain weight behind their opinion over some rando with an "uneducated" opinion.

Same can be said for the lived experience.

Should an academic be given more credit when voicing an opinion on something that they've studied? Sure. But at the end of the day, the affected individual's opinion should have the most consideration.

It bears repeating since ya'll seem hung up on this, that doesn't mean ya'lls opinions go straight in the trash. It simply means they don't matter as much as the person who is directly affected by actions that take place once opinions are put to legislation.

Take a breath, check your ego, realize you're not 100% wrong but that you are in fact wrong, and learn from this:
