It's not "on a whim", officers are assigned based on their location at the time of the call, and whoever is closest gets the assignment. A police officer is almost always closer than a social worker.

Like I said, easy to hide behind your computer and throw the officer under the bus. Far different when you're in the officer's shoes and have to make a split second decision to protect yourself and others.

But the whole crux of being an officer of the law is that you're trained and ready to put yourself into these tough situations on basically a whim.

This isn't a combat zone in a war where you could mistake a civilian for a combatant. An officer is supposed to be the more level headed individual on the scene. But you constantly hear about officers who just endlessly fuck up when put in even banal situations.

It's just weird how Americans say "We can't expect our officers to react appropriately in situations they're (ostensibly) trained for"

Imagine caring about the other people in the bathroom if:

A) you don't know them
B) they don't interact with you in any meaningful manner

Also what sparked the interaction? Was she standing up to pee? What if they were a woman using a shewee/peecock?

I just can't comprehend the Trans bathroom concerns. There's no magical force field that magically exists just cause a door says man/woman, a man can just as easily walk into any woman's bathroom as he can a man's.

Yeah this argument is amusing when there's a literal process people need to follow in order to avoid being shot by police.

Like we hear about those poor naive tourists who leave their car to greet the officer who suddenly have a gun pointed at their face.

There shouldn't be a process people need to follow in order to not be shot by the police.

Cops shouldn't be shooting people except in cases like this, and IN THIS CASE the officers still had more options than just shooting a guy dead.

The America culture surrounding officers encourages this behavior instead of putting the onus on the cops to non-violently handle criminals, even if they are (or may be) armed.

Not to mention how dangerous firing a gun in general is. If you miss you create ricochet that may result in someone else getting shot, or if you hit a shallow area, it could punch clean through them and hit someone behind them.

Just because the officer may have been logically justified here doesn't mean that they still couldn't have handled the situation way better.

A better way would be more than one officer having a stun gun.

Or if there are two officers there, using the two together to take the man down.
