I don't think he did it, at least not completely, but my hat's off to mom in this story. I'm guessing even if he snuck a little here and there he still had a lot less exposure than his peers. He probably appreciates the money, but he won't know the real reward his mom gave him until he has kids of his own.

I didn't realize it was a once daily thing so I just started a couple days ago. I'm at played 3, won 3 and finished today's on try 3. I'm not sure how long this will hold my interest as so far my strategy has held up not just for those 3 but also like 60 rounds on a clone app I got off google play.

6th Draft: UB ninjas (4-3) - This could be my bad, but I don't think ninjas are very good. Not only did I barely get above even, my win rate against UB is 9-4. Either too many people are trying draft it (untapped does say it's the most played archetype, if only by 1-2%) or it's just not good. I had the same problem with this deck as the U/R deck from my phantom draft - too many small creatures.

7th Draft: RW always read your signals (2-3?) - Things went pretty bad for me here because I did not read the signals well. I got several good green cards early in pack one then it dried up completely. I thought I could still get some good green in pack 2 so I picked up white cards that would work well with W/G and it was even more dire in pack two. By the time I realize I need to move into red I've passed too many cards that would would have worked in the deck. I also got mana screwed in 2 out of 3 loses, but I don't think I'd have done much better regardless. I need to give R/W Samurai Warriors a real chance.

8th Draft: UG something? (4-3) - I have to be honest, unlike most of the other color pairs in the set I don't know what blue-green wants to do. I'm also unclear with B/G as well. Both seem to be value oriented in some way? I don't think I want to find myself in either in the future since all of the others haver a clear game plan that I understand.

9th Draft: WURG shrines (1-3) - I shouldn't have tried this, I didn't quite have enough of the right parts to make it work. But early in the draft I got multiple Shrines early and I got the mana fixing but by the end I was coming up very dry. Can a shrines deck win? I don't know, but it's not going to work often. I almost quit after this one.

10th Draft: R/B artifact (sacrifice) (7-2) - Wow, what a ride. After starting 0-2 I thought I botched this. There is so much great synergy with the Oni Helm, Reinforced Ronin, and Dragonspark Reactor. Throw in the dopeness of Heiko Yamazaki and I managed the most nerve wracking but also satisfying 7 win run.

I also hit platinum for the first in limited. For those that can't tell I love this draft format, and it doesn't hurt that my overall W/L still has me at a profit since I started. Here's hoping I go infinite!

I am really enjoying this draft format. It may actually be the best one that's ever been on Arena. I always feel like there are plenty of payables and even without big splashy bombs you can do quite well.

1st draft: WUB crap (2-3) - I just couldn't get it the first time. I just great black cards for picks 1-4 so I assumed it was fairly open, then it dried up. I went with white as a second color and that soon dried up too, so I tried to dive in to blue to salvage what I had and, well, no luck.

2nd Draft: WB "balance" (6-3) - Started the draft thinking "oh god, try for anything but B/W because that didn't work last time" It sure worked this time. I actually got passed 4 of the BW uncommons but, because they're legendary, I only ended up taking two. No one had a problem giving me the goods this time and I ran with it.

3rd Draft: UR trash (3-?) - This was the free "phantom" draft against the bots. The bots do not take or give signals and the pile I ended up with was mediocre. I got a few losses before I strung together 3 wins and quit.

4th Draft: GW enchantments (7-1) - This time I was finally feeling my groove, I guess. I actually thought I had a pretty sub-standard pile but it was not. My only loss came against another GW deck and we literally got to the point where he drew his last card and won. His deck was actually a lot better than mine, I think, but I'm 90% sure I could have decked him if not for one very significant misplay.

5th Draft: UW artifacts (5-3) - So this wasn't a vehicles deck, I actually only picked up one vehicle though I'd have licked more. No, my p1p1 was Tezzeret, and I was more busy picking up some stuff with good synergy there. It's awesome that you can take your smaller artifact creatures like say Acquisition Octopus and make them 4/4. I also had double Replication Specialist, which did mad amounts of work. The only thing I question was my p2p2 - I took Hoverbike over mechtitan thinking I'd never really be able to pull it off. I was wrong on that, but the hoverbike flashing in and tapping oppo creatures figured in so often that maybe I made the right choice? No way to know for sure now.

This was an enjoyable album. There were only a couple of true standouts for me, but in the end I did listen to this album more times than any album I've ranked so far. I would be surprised that I never heard this album before, but most of the 2000s was a black hole for new music for me (unless it was trance/house/eurobeat stuff). This sounded a lot like the stuff I had been listening to five years before it came out, and I think maybe it just took them too long to break out. In fact, with how fickle the music industry is, it's a surprise they made it when they did. Well worth a listen.

There are some really good looking cards for mono white agro in NEO so far, so I have a feeling it's going to be around for awhile. There's still plenty of time to see how things shake out, but it seems like WotC now wants little white men to fill the spot that little red men did for so many years going back.

I wouldn't have run 16 lands in cycling either. With so many cards that cycle for one you should never have land problems. I don't know how to help you with your land problems other than to tell you to rethink them entirely. Everyone gets hit with flood/screw, you're not special in that. Either you need to learn how to build better, mulligan better, or just stop doing whatever screwed up "shuffle" you're doing... This shit hits everybody, but I've never experienced anyone who legitimately gets screwed/flooded every game.

So what's good to draft in Ikoria? My store is drafting it on Friday.
R/W Cycling is far and away the best thing to draft, especially if you snag a Zenith Flare or Flourishing Fox early. Sadly most people know this, so if you're playing with a pretty knowledgeable group you may find yourself fighting for scraps very early. B/W humans and U/G mutate are also pretty decent, though nothing compared to getting cycling uncontested.

It's also possible to go G/B reanimator, U/R spells matter or one of the five keyword tribals - vigilance, menace, flying, flash, trample. I've gone 7-X with both vigilance and trample tribal, so if your opponents are fighting each other over the cycling and mutate cards these are also possibilities if you're seeing the good rares/uncommons for them. Unlike the above three, there's no gain in forcing any of these. Only go for them if the cards are coming to you.

Oh, and most of the companions are still obscenely powerful even with the tax or even if you have to run them main deck. I once had someone pass me Obosh and unless he got a Zenith Flare I can't believe he made the right choice.

So a week into Alchemy and I'm shocked at the number of people playing mono white. The deck isn't nearly as good as it is in standard, even with the new Alchemy cards that fit in it, and if you really don't have the resources to invest in a new deck why not use your existing deck where it's actually top tier?

Very few people play Izzet turns in the format, though it's hella funny when you can tell your opponent is trying to figure out why they didn't get the birds or why they don't have enough mana to cast a foretold Epiphany.

Clerics, Werewolves, and Dragons are all good, a real plus for anyone who is a fan of those tribes. Dragons is stupidly expensive, though, and very draw dependent. As someone who wanted to see Party be a thing it's sadly not, even less so than standard. For those who wanted Venture to be a thing... sorry, Venture will probably never be a thing.

Of course it's probably going to see another shakeup in a week, so we'll see how things turn out.

Those full art lands are beautiful. They're really killing it with the full arts lately. The planeswalker that phases out for the opponent's turn seems fair despite how hard it will be to kill, but if I've learned anything from the last two years of the game its the fact that playing fair no longer cuts it.

Anyone else have thoughts on Alchemy now that it's been live for a few days? I was pleasantly surprised by the number of free packs they gave away (wildcards even if you don't want to play Alchemy) and actually, so far, I've enjoyed it a little. Mostly because there is much more variety at play. Still, they've only added one small set and I have a feeling that in the future it's going to be a lot harder to keep up with unless they keep giving people like 10 free packs for each mini set.

Just saw the announcement on the Alchemy format. I'm not too keen on digital only formats, but the monthly rebalancing and new cards between each standard set will make it tempting to look into. Because of how fast people figure out the meta on Arena it's going to be the only way to really keep things feeling fresh.

Yeah, every set is a commander set now and it's dumb. The format did just fine without Wizards targeting it, and it may just out live WotC since people would keep playing it even if another Magic card never got printed. Silver boarders were just so much better and easier for identifying those cards that don't belong in the game and I'm guessing there will be some issues that stem from this change.

Those full art lands, however, fucking magnificent.

There's variance on bomb heaviness for sure. It's not there's any set with no bombs, but some sets give you better tools to deal with them or even keep the bomb count low enough that you can still remain relatively competitive without them. Amonkhet Remastered and Theros Beyond Death were both sets that I regularly went positive on with no rares at all. Sure, TBD has some pretty gross bombs like Kiora Bests the Sea God and Dream Trawler, but most of the rares are pretty fair cards like Eat to Extinction or The Akroan War.

I don't mind taking a loss to the one-off Dream Trawler, I do mind when every other person you play opened bomb rares and you just can't win. Almost every game I lost, the opponent had some rare that just took over the game. If there was more quality removal that might help, if there were fewer ways to get your bomb rares back that might also help. As it is, though, so many rares can just get out of hand because the format is built to allow it.

It's things like that that make me hate bomb-heavy draft formats. Sure, you're not likely to even hear of someone else getting that specific combo, but obviously it happens. Where's the fun in a format where either you open something ridiculous or you barely squeak out a 3-3? I guess if you get those ridiculous packs and you like picking on people for only having fair cards, but even that would get old fast wouldn't it? I just can't imagine getting a great card pack one and then opening pack two and seeing a card that says "congrats, you get a 7-X even if you're the worst player of the day."

"Dies to removal" is a well known bad argument in magic, perhaps even the worst one. I mean, let's throw that back. With a 7 mana epiphany, if your opponent has a counterspell your win con fizzles. The argument may as well be "unless you punch your opponent in the throat, they get to keep playing against you." Yes, you still have to protect it, but boy oh boy does it do a good job of protecting itself as long as you have instants and open mana.
