Katrina is a hard case to compare since it wasn't really the hurricane directly that caused the big problems; 15" inches of rain are expected widely with up to 25" isolated over the next five days or so, latest models bring it to the lower end of Cat 4 (130mph winds with higher gusts) as well although the official forecast is currently a little lower. It's not the brightness of the visible light that damages your eyes, it's the UV that you can't see. That's why regular sunglasses won't work and you need something specifically designed to block the maximum amount of UVA/B/C possible. You absolutely will damage your eyes if you try to view it without the right protection, it's not scaremongering in any way.

Yeah it's one that took a long time to grow on me but I like it at least as much as TDaG, although if a couple of the songs from those leaked demos had been on it then it might have been different. Especially Untitled 4, some of Jesse's best lyrics IMO.

Yeah regular sunglasses are a definite 'please don't try it'. If you can't get hold of the glasses and don't want to fork out for #14 welding goggles (and that #14 is important too) have a look at making a pinhole camera. There is another total eclipse crossing the US in 2024 if that makes the welding goggle purchase worth it.
