(note: in the time between me finishing the game and me making this topic, I learned from a friend I was talking to about it that there's apparently a true ending to the game and I got the normal one and thus missed a ton of the game's content. Maybe that would make me like it more. I dunno. But when the game itself doesn't really guide you towards it at all and this ending seems endingish enough I think it's still valid to find faults in only this part)

To start with the simplest, most obvious complaint: Difficulty level is super low. Thanks to the ease/efficiency of healing when hitting enemies the only places you'll die really are boss fights before you learn patterns (since all the bosses are extremely formulaic) or rooms with mostly traps and no enemies so you can't heal. Damage balancing is kinda off, too... final boss deals the same amount of damage per hit as the very first weakest enemy in the game.

The game mostly being braindead easy in terms of not dying is good though, since the ghost mechanic where you have to go retrieve your cash is awful for a game like this. The game is based entirely around exploration and discovering new areas so I don't know why they ever thought it would be a good idea to essentially force you back to the same place every time you die. Feels more like they just wanted to copy dark souls because dark souls is hip and cool rather than actually thinking about what it meant for the game itself.

Speaking of exploring, that's the game's strongest point. It's directionless and you explore. Maybe too directionless. I spent most of the game just wandering around like an idiot finding new places until (a bit of game structure spoilers) I found the dream nail, at which point I just went straight to all 3 dreamers and killed them since I'd already had everything explored. I guess it's nice if you just like wandering around with no tangible reward, but the big issue is that almost all the time, your reward for exploring a new area is one of:

1) Another new area (probably with nothing useful in it, either)
2) A key item of ambiguous usage that appears totally useless at first glance
3) A charm you'll never equip since you already have way more charms than slots

None of which feel very nice to find after putting in effort exploring a new place. The number of actually useful finds is extremely low; fireball spell, dash, wall cling, superdash, dream nail. That's it. Heart pieces are useful sure but only once you get 4 and considering how few and far between they are, mixed in with all the other garbage rewards, they don't feel very nice to find either. Not that you need them anyway,

The aesthetic is nice, I will admit. I wish they didn't put so much environmental decoration in the foreground though since there are a few areas where it's a pain to see yourself/enemies because of it. I also like how you can dash around while bouncing on enemies, when you get movement going well in this game it feels really, really good.


Overall I really don't understand how I can be seeing people call this game of the year. Well, I guess I haven't played much else that released this year so it's possible every other game is even worse but in that case the gaming business is in pretty dire straights since I can think of many similar games that did this game but better from 10+ years ago :/

My final clear stats were 44% in just over 12 hours. I can't say I feel particularly compelled to hunt down the rest of the game's useless collectibles though

also, no WW is no wrong warps, not no warp whistle. wrong warps being a type of glitch where you somehow trick the game into misreading the destination table for a loading zone and walking through a door in one place causes you to come out somewhere totally different

the most interesting complaint I've heard about botw is related to the overall world design. Basically they were saying that because you can just climb pretty much anything at no real cost or extra effort, the game feels very flat since there's functionally very little difference between moving horizontally and moving vertically

people just saying "aaaaa the weapons break aaaaaa game sucks" really bug me because, well, yes, the weapons do break. That's a major part of the game's design. If you want to list it as a negative you should actually make a point about how it makes the game worse rather than just that it exists

How do speed runners maintain their sanity when they do 2+ hour runs that have "frame perfect" parts that require like 1/60th of a second reactions?

1) frame perfect tricks don't require extremely fast reaction, they require extremely precise timing. Which is a lot easier. there are a variety of cues runners might use

2) many common speedrun games don't run at 60fps. banjo kazooie for example (since run of it just happened) runs at 30fps which means a frame perfect trick has twice as big a time window as you might expect.

Not saying they're easy to do but they aren't quite as hard as you think

it's not quite as fun to play as that guy makes it look lol

the game takes directionlessness to a completely new (and often frustrating) level and the general difficulty of the game is just way too low at almost every point so there's very little challenge other than just figuring out where to go with basically no hints and rooms too big for how slowly you move

if the LN itself is finished it might be reasonable to wait for the translation (depending on when their last chapter release was)

if the LN itself is still ongoing I can't really advise waiting until it ends because there's absolutely no telling when that will happen lol

it had 4 free trials that are actually included with the game as well to make sure you read them because the trials are seemingly inconsistent with the story itself and that's just another piece of the puzzle. I want to check it out some time because it just sounds absolutely insane

I recommend checking out battle kid. It's basically IWBTG but released for the NES in 2010 (yes, an NES game released it 2010). The game itself is not bad but more than anything I'm fascinated it even exists, there are actually physical cartridge releases for it and everything

more thoughts after having played it for a few hours:

1) that dark area really sucks
2) map only filling in when you reach a save is annoying espeiclaly when you're as bad at finding saves as I am
3) the amount you can heal just from hitting enemies a few times is waaaay too much and honestly makes the difficulty of the entire game (so far) a bit of a joke
4) it's hilarious that you can climb vertical spike walls by just jumping near them and spamming downward slash, the recoil pushes you up faster than gravity pulls you down

ok I played it a bit it's pretty fun

damage boosted into the jellyfish place early but there was a weird black wall in front of the map guy so it was a bit pointless. At least there was a train station in there so I could get back out lol

I'm still not totally sold on the recoil from hitting things in combat being good in any way, but maybe I'll grow to like it eventually

I sort of want to try ikaruga sometime

but ultimately the genre is very... straightforward. You move at a fixed speed (maybe you have a slow and a fast speed) in any direction you want and you dodge stuff. that's like, the majority of the gameplay of most of them, or at least all the ones I've tried

That's what I mean the definition has stretched a little. If they're being funded by a separate publisher, they aren't indie games anymore. They're smaller games sure, but they're not really indie. Nothing to do with the amount of funding they receive or whether they need to kickstarter or etc

64 is really good, my favourite of the 3D games because it feels more distilled down to just the fun stuff about the gameplay whereas the later games tend to pad stuff in a little here and there

I only played the first grisaia and I can't really say it showed through super strongly there (though you could still sort of tell) but I think it's more pronounced in the 2nd and 3rd parts of the trilogy. The recent spinoff series (grisaia: phantom trigger) will probably also have it considering the name and the promo art

if you really want detailed stuff though check out innocent bullet - the false world-. I didn't get very far in it since my jp was not good enough to read all this splurging about a topic I wasn't very interested in so I can't say whether it's actually good unfortunately. But considering I dropped it because it had too much gun talk and it has a glossary with descriptions and 3D models (iirc, might just be 2D pics) I don't think I can say it's lacking on that front

Replayability is the only thing on that list that often hurts how games are designed. Instead of delivering a satisfying experience in a single playthrough, lots of games will artificially withhold perks or story beats, force you to replay and grind through levels you've already seen.

you know, I never even really thought about this as part of "replayability". And thinking about why, it's probably because I don't own many (any?) games that really do this. But ultimately, a system that locks certain things until your second playthrough, or third, or whatever, means nothing in terms of replayability to me. They make you want to replay it, sure, but that's different from making replaying it fun which is what I consider replayability.

To me, replayability is based a lot around freedom and available choices. If a game is extremely heavily scripted, its replayability is low since you've seen everything already the first time.
