agents of mayhem is the new saints row

Why isn't Saints Row in the title? Is this like a spiritual sequel or something? I'm a SR fan and I didn't even know about this.

In Gat Out of Hell, when you can pick the ending where Johnny asks God to reboot the entire universe... that's supposedly the canon ending of the game.

So now Agents of Mayhem (or technically, Agents of MAYHEM) is basically the new reality, where the Saints never existed, and where the main narrative revolves around a GI Joe/Cobra-esque conflict set somewhere in a futuristic Seoul, South Korea.

News about it has actually been kind of sparce as fuck. But what info they HAVE released (and they first announced it was coming about a year ago) mostly seems to fly under the radar anyway.

it's a new one, with all the same. anesthetics, vehicles, and world. just this time you're an agent of mayhem.

It's not really the same aesthetic - while it's supposed to have the same sort of sense of humor as the later Saints Row games, the gameplay is different, and you're not making your own character as much as you're supposed to be engaging in more tactical team play with a team of preexisting characters.

Which is actually the part that annoys me the most about it - I liked making my own "Boss" and running things, but that's apparently not on the table anymore.

Except when you're BioWare and you try to make Inquisition the best of both worlds and fail miserably

I blame the fans for that. So many people shat on DA2 in spite of the combat being fine, BioWare panicked and decided they had to have combat more like DA:O (which is what most of the loudest ranters claimed they wanted).

But they (and probably EA even more so) were also aware that the average fan doesn't really want turn-based tactical combat, especially with games like Skyrim exploding in popularity, so they still felt like they needed to have SOME level of hack-and-slash.

So they wound up trying to create a hybrid that incorporated elements of both, but wound up being worse than either.

It wasn't entirely surprising, though. When they first openly admitted they were looking at Skyrim for inspiration, my instinctive reaction was "Watch them copy all the worst parts of Skyrim and completely miss the actual reasons why it became popular", and they pretty much fulfilled that prophecy to a T.

And now that news has started to trickle out about DA4, I feel like they haven't learned a single worthwhile lesson and are going to wind up tanking another franchise for me.

BioWare has basically become my new Square - they've gone from being one of my favorite developers and the people putting out my absolutely favorite games, to being a company I don't want to touch with a 10-foot pole. Square was pretty much God for the 90s, BioWare was pretty much God for the 00s, and right now I barely want anything to do with either of them.

(Especially since BioWare is openly admitting that Anthem is basically going to be their Destiny clone - I'm not sure anyone on PotD could actually pay me enough to ever care about/look forward to that game now. So I'm basically left with two murdered franchises and one stillborn one.)

and the same turn-based slowness that I'd have to deal with for 80 hours.

I'm assuming this isn't going anywhere, because turn-based combat is sort of one of the cornerstones of the franchise (though I could be wrong - again, haven't really played the modern games). I'd assume that people who've loved the series from the beginning don't really want that most fundamental of elements to change.

That being said, it's probably worth noting that the shift AWAY from turn-based combat is probably a large part of what murdered my interest in JRPGs. Mainly because it always felt to me like Final Fantasy tried to retain tactical combat while doing away with turns, resulting in most of their later combat systems being terrible abominations that frustrated the piss out of me. Whereas WRPGs seemed to basically say "Fuck it, let's just make combat into real-time hack-and-slash or FPS-with-swords", both of which feel WAAAY more satisfying to me.

I've always been disgusted by RTS games in general, though, so it's not entirely surprising that forcing JRPGs along RTS lines was never going to end well for me.

I was mostly referring to the earlier games. I've dropped the series entirely myself, so I have no idea what the later games are like, or if they've finally settled into a mold they just never change anymore. But it didn't used to be that way.

But there's something else to consider that might be a factor...

Raganork posted...
I've played DQ7, 8, and 9. From my experience, they all played pretty much the same, beat for beat.

Maybe DQ11 is different, but after giving the series three chances, I'm very hesitant on trying another.

One thing to consider is that DQ always sort of built itself around the idea of trilogies. DQ1-3 is basically a single story - DQ1 is the middle part, DQ2 is the direct sequel that takes place two generations later, and DQ3 is a prequel that happens long before the first game. DQ4-6 are also a loose trilogy, as is 7-9.

If your complaint is that 7, 8, and 9 are all more or less the same, it might be completely intentional because they're tied together thematically. I can't promise that DQ11 would be super-different (again, I haven't played any of the games in the series since DW4), but it might be, because it falls into a different trilogy (even assuming they're still lumping them into trilogies at all - I know next to nothing about DQ11).

If you were interested you'd probably have to find someone who actually plays the games to get a more intricate breakdown, but I wouldn't just dismiss it out of hand as being just the same thing over and over, if only because there HAVE been changes to the series at various points (if nothing else, at least early on).

Then again, it's entirely possible the entire franchise went to complete shit via the Squeenix merger in exactly the same way Final Fantasy did, sooo... ~shrug~

the same Akira Toriyama art style that I can't stand

This, I can't argue with. Being a bit older, I didn't "grow up" with Dragon Ball Z like all the 90s kids, so I have zero nostalgia for his art style. And I've never really liked it, even as a kid (it's probably a good thing Nintendo changed the box art for the North American version of Dragon Warrior, or I probably never would have bought it).

(and on that topic:
)

That, plus the complete lack of recognizable continuity, was also a large part of what made the Dragon Warrior cartoon hard to watch/enjoy when it was originally on (
)

But Toriyama's art design was never a negative for the early games in the franchise, because it didn't translate well to pixel art anyway. And since you literally never saw your main character as anything more than a tiny blob, you were probably filling in your own mental image that looked nothing like his art style.

It's exactly the same way that Amano's style never bothered me in the original Final Fantasy games, because it only barely translated into pixel-art, whereas it probably would have bothered the fuck out of me in a more high-fidelity graphical environment. By the time the games reached a point where it would have started to irk me, they'd already switched to Nomura.

Weren't there supposed to be 3 more games after the trilogy?

i think it was more like the trilogy was supposed to be 6 games but they ended up condensing it into 3

It's complicated.

The original plans for Xenogears on the PS1 were that they wanted to make 6 games, with an art book released in Japan revealing those plans (and that Xenogears itself was essentially "Episode 5").

Then when they finally got the rights back and were working on Xenosaga for the PS2, it was supposed to be on the same timeline, but then they decided that the original "Episode 1" wasn't long enough to be its own game, so they just made that the opening cutscene of the game while the rest of the game involved the events of what was originally supposed to be "Episode 2".

But then they basically just kept stretching the plot of what was originally "Episode 2" across all three games, so all we really got from the original plan was a truncated Episode 1, Episode 2, and Episode 5. Meaning there's still be three missing.

They kind of shitcanned that, though, because Xenosaga sort of tanked anyway.

I would assume the Harry Potter version is based on the actual folklore version (ie, the one he was linking to there). Though I don't give a single shit about Harry Potter, so I have no idea if the comparison to Pennywise is really blatant, or if J. K. Rowling openly came out at one point and said "Yep, it's absolutely a reference to It." (which might explain why Stephen King flipped his shit over Harry Potter and over-referenced it in Wolves of the Calla, in spite of how absolutely terrible that was).

Personally, when I think Boggarts, I just think the race of faeries from Changeling: the Dreaming, which came out a couple years before Harry Potter. Not that I think she stole the idea from there (though she did apparently steal a lot of ideas from other book series while writing Harry Potter, so, it's always possible).

It's his money, but paying $85 to play another in a long line of RPGs that all play exactly the same? Guess I just never understood the series.

It was actually pretty cool when it was Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior I, when there weren't a ton of alternatives. DW was pretty much THE game that introduced me into the world of video game RPGs. But it never sold all that well in the West - which is why Nintendo wound up giving away a ton of unsold copies free to anyone who subscribed to Nintendo Power. They were expecting Japan-levels of excitement and sales, and they got... chirping crickets.

And then DW2 came out, which was a much weaker game (and got frustratingly hard at the end, which made the game as a whole less enjoyable), and which wasn't released in North America until a few months after Final Fantasy (which was a much better game in pretty much every possible way). Which sort of made things even worse.

DW3 was actually the best of the first three by far, but by that point the franchise was already treading water in the West, no matter how popular it was in Japan. And DW4 wound up doing so bad that they just stopped porting it over entirely until after Playstation revitalized demand for all things JRPG years later. For all the love that the Japanese have for the series, it almost died off completely here and Final Fantasy basically became "our" RPG.

But the DW/DQ games don't really play "exactly the same" - each game tended to introduce new elements or refine ones from previous games, so that, while the gameplay was familiar, it wasn't necessarily static. And "let's constantly innovate for the fuck of it" isn't necessarily a better design philosophy anyway, considering the fact that while it helped give us some awesome Final Fantasy games, it's also given us some incredibly shitty Final Fantasy games.

Fun fact that absolutely no one other than Shadow will care about: I stole part of the plot of the original Dragon Warrior game for my first Changeling character I played online - my Sidhe knight wound up fighting a dragon and saving a princess solely because that's what you do in DW1. A lot of elements of that character were basically rooted in fond childhood memories, because that's sort of the whole metaphorical point of Changeling (even if I almost never, ever actually PLAY it that way).

That probably was the best one. Second best might be The Gunslinger. And then maybe the last half or so of The Dark Tower.

The rest... I can sort of take or leave depending on my mood. It's a far more interesting series in concept than it is in execution.

I wouldn't even say it's the best example of a writer slowly interweaving every book they've ever written into a massive overarching continuity after the fact - Asimov got there first and did it way better.

Yeah the writing without GRRM has been a little too obvious but whatever

I don't think he was ever a huge writer for the show. They used to let him write a single episode each season, but the eps were never that good. And he quit doing that around season 5 to "finish his book".

But it was always Dan and Dave doing 90% of the writing

I'm assuming their point was less that GRRM was actually writing for the show, as opposed to the show going its own route (like it is now) versus when the show was actually (mostly) still being guided by the books.

Once they crossed the threshold at the end of book 5, the show suddenly had more freedom to do whatever they wanted rather than having to adhere to preexisting plot, so there's always a risk that they're going to go off the rails and deliver something which is incredibly disappointing compared to whatever the "official" story was supposed to be vis-a-vis the books.

Or to put it another way, there's no scene in the books of Dany meeting Jon, so they had literally nothing to go on but their own ideas when writing that scene. Whereas most of the really important scenes earlier on were directly inspired by stuff that was shown in the books, even if they changed the dialogue slightly for the show.

Like it or not, other people DO have other opinions than you do, and the fact that you may not be bothered by something doesn't mean other people can't be bothered by it, or that they can't be annoyed when you disrespect them by dismissing their concerns out of hand.

What you're describing is how 10-year olds think - "I don't care about something, therefore no one should care about it". It's a mode of pre-abstract thinking that humans are supposed to develop out of around the same time we go through puberty.

Realistically, King probably based most of their fears on stuff he was afraid of when he was a kid, because It (and Stand by Me) are pretty clearly based on a lot of his own personal experiences as a kid growing up in Maine in the 50s.

You don't have to label your sexuality.

Humans define ourselves, others, and the entirety of the world we live in mainly by labels. It's hardwired into our brains on a very fundamental level, and is at the root of most of our higher cognitive processes.

It's why we can pick up an apple and immediately go "Hey, this is an apple" - we are comparing the thing we are holding to the mental image we have contructed in our minds connected to the term "apple", and are spitting out the label attached to it. Nearly all of our deductive reasoning and most of our conversational ability is rooted in our ability to label things and draw conclusions from those labels.

The real problem isn't "labeling", per se. It's what connotations you ATTACH to those labels. And how strongly you cling to those assumptions even in the face of potentially needing to revise them.

He's a very Stephen King-y sort of character.

Also, IT was one of those stories that got tied into all of the Dark Tower stuff later on, so reading those (or at least a wiki article about the overall mythos) might give you a different perspective on him, but it might just confuse you even more. Though it was written before the tie-ins started, so it definitely stands on its own if you're not into the rest of the craziness.

Supposedly Nintendo was surprised by how successful demand for the Switch was, even above and beyond their usual pattern of underproducing consoles to generate artificial supply/demand. I can easily see that being a problem, especially in Japan where the consumer-base is probably both the most pro-Nintendo and the most pro-handheld (per capita).

Pretty sure that's actually a thing in America as well, though. It's not common, but I seem to remember it has been used in some cases for some things at various times.

The real problem is that the Japanese have always been more obsessive about video games in general. THEY love Dragon Quest so much they have to make its release days national holidays because everyone skips work anyway, WE wind up having so many unsold copies of the game Nintendo Power has to give them away for free. Things like Black Friday sales aside, the Japanese are way more likely to be the ones staking out an electronics store for games more than Americans ever really do. So you're always going to see the more extreme scenarios there first before anything comparable happens here.

I don't hate actual moderates, but I'm convinced very few of them exist. Most "moderates" I see are people who are just too afraid of the stigma of identifying as liberal or conservative

An argument can also be made that most "liberals" and "conservatives" are just idiots who can't think for themselves, so they merely parrot back things they've heard shouted by other, louder voices who have far more conviction.

Trophy hunting anything is sick

Unless you're a vegan, you're complicit in animal murder every single day of your life.

"It's different because hunters don't use the animal!" isn't even really a defense, because a) some hunters will absolutely eat the kill or otherwise make use of at least some of its parts, even aside from whatever they're presumably keeping as their "trophy", and b) because plenty of processes that use animal material aren't necessarily all that efficient and throw out most of it anyway.

And then that's not even getting into just how many animal habitats and ecosystems humans destroy on a regular basis to build homes or farm crops. Or inhumane living conditions most stock animals endure for most of their lives.

Humans are pretty much the worst thing to ever happen to animals in general. It's kind of hypocritical to draw the line at hunting and ignore every other facet of life.

I hate how people are just making shitty movies hoping to cash out because people think they'll be so bad

Maybe it was always intended as a tax write-off, and it failing will actually be the best possible outcome for them.

Or maybe this will be one of those terrible scenarios where it bombs here but Chinese audiences love it and it makes $37 billion overall, and then we'll get a dozen sequels.

People will think this topic is real news and then wrongfully hate president trump

People who already hate Trump won't need any more ammunition, and the people who don't hate him won't care or will assume it's BS.

The Internet has ushered in a glorious new era of pretty much all information being worthless, because we can't trust any of it, so most of us just continue to believe what we've already believed all along no matter what evidence exists to argue otherwise.

Topics like this one just reinforce that (and, ironically, ultimately help Trump).

People who think movies have only gotten worse need to check out a little era known as the 50s and 60s

Those two decade produced more shitty B movies than you can imagine

The problem is that most people feel like the later 60s and the 70s produced a lot of artistic films that were masterpieces, while the 80s and 90s tended more towards blockbusters and action films, but the industry as a whole is no longer really capable of the same highs it used to hit on a somewhat regular basis.

In a way, film is exactly the same as the current gaming industry - most of the major massive studios see the business AS a business and keep churning out financially successful but creatively bankrupt mega-titles, while the indie scene is where you'll find most of the actual creativity, but where you'll also find a ton of amateurish and/or pretentious garbage that tends to drown out the worthwhile alternatives.

It's that polarizing effect that makes it seem like both movies and games are always crap now, because you really aren't seeing that Venn diagram crossover between "brilliant" and "mainstream financial success". Which is why the rare example that does sort of straddle that line always seems to be such a huge deal when it happens - we're not used to seeing it any more.

political topics would be a hell of a lot better without him because he just uses those as a springboard to act dumb/contrary for attention.

Political topics on PotD start out hot liquid garbage and go downhill with every successive post, and more or less always have.

They're like watching a bunch of kindergartners try and have a debate about nuclear physics - not a single person has any fucking clue what they're talking about, pretty much everything anyone says is wrong in some way (or wrong in pretty much every way), not a single person is going to change anyone else's mind, and by the end of it multiple people will be screaming insults at each other while at least one person is probably throwing feces.

To be fair, though, you could also say the same about most religion topics on PotD, most medical health or science topics on PotD, and... well... let's just say most topics on PotD.

As for acting dumb/contrary for attention, you've definitely just described at least 80% of PotD's posters.

I actually like Toby Fox's music a lot (or at least I did when it was in Homestuck - Undertale, I gave very few fucks for), but I wouldn't even necessarily call it the best video game music I'd ever heard even when it was new. I could probably name tons of games I thought had better music released years earlier (and in some cases, more than a decade earlier), and there's been a few good soundtracks in the last year or two as well.

While everybody has preferences, the day that you stop trying things is the day you start shouting at people to stay off your lawn and contemplate sticking balloons onto your house to move from your neighborhood.

Let's be honest, I've been shouting at people to get off my lawn for almost 30 years now.

And I didn't like Up, either. Pixar's made precisely one movie in their entire history that I kinda sorta liked. And that was less about the movie and more about my pre-existing interests and biases.

But you're confusing two concepts there. Being willing to stay open-minded and open to new ideas and experiences is not the same as feeling a crushing existential obligation to experience EVERY new thing regardless of context so long as even a single other person claims that they enjoyed it.

If I didn't start watching My Little Pony when half the Internet started masturbating over it (and you can substitute Avatar/Adventure Time/Steven Universe/Gravity Falls/etc here if you like), and I hated 90% of the music my peers in high school listened to all the time, I'm probably not going to be all that susceptible to peer pressure now. Especially when I'm a misanthrope who hates most of my peers anyway.

The boy not so much, but being on a strange island with a talking dog sounds fucking awesome.

Maybe you can teach the dog to sing and get him to sing songs from Hamilton to me. Maybe then I'd listen.
