Link Between Worlds' reception is really weird. Ask anyone who's played it and they'll say it's, at the very least, great. A lot of people think it's amazing. Put it in front of them and they'll praise it, but ask them for a list of their favorite games and it will *never* be remembered. It won GotY 2013 and didn't make the 2015 contest.

This. It's always seemed really weird to me. Although there's probably 3 reasons for it:

- It didn't do enough to differentiate itself from A Link to the Past
- Most people still look at handheld games as second class
- Nostalgia

Yeah, I have 2000 > 1997 as well. Take away Final Fantasy VII and 1997 really doesn't have that much going for it. Granted even then its a gamble, since I'm unsure if depth is gonna matter that much.

Mario RPG is weird. it's the ultimate leech. Leon is already rolling his eyes.

basically, it has massive crossover appeal while not actually being all that popular. it's Square and it's Nintendo. put it against anything but those two companies and it does great. put it up against a core fanbase and it collapses. it's not that unlike, say, Tetris in that regard.

the last contest had it facing GTA5, Oblivion, RE4 and MGS3 - all new games, none of them Square or Nintendo. the only game that fit that bill was Chrono Cross and it only got 60% on that. I think stats would say that RE4 gets like 56% on Chrono Cross. doesn't seem right to me.

This. SMRPG got an insanely lucky draw that contest. The whole point of that quarter of the bracket was to keep all the strong Nintendo and Square games out so MSG, RE4, or a western game would win. But SBAllen underestimated how much this site loves its JRPGs. SMRPG's 8-pack was (unintentionally) designed to make it and Chrono Cross look as good as possible, since they got to beat up modern western games that look strong but aren't really. Then the bandwagon gave it the needed boost to beat RE4 and MGS, which were also looking a bit off that contest.

Put SMRPG in the top half of the bracket and I doubt it amounts to much of anything.

I think 2000 is a bit underrated. It's still Gen 5, so it should get a large chunk of the 90s nostalgia boost. Majora's Mask is no joke, and it also has Final Fantasy IX, Pokemon GS, the PS2, and shitloads of depth.

I think 2000 making it to Round 4 is very possible, if not likely.

The last question I wonder is at what point games start to become too old for site users to look back on them fondly. I was born in 1980. I remember when the NES came out. Certainly not everyone here can say that, and so for many here the SNES or the N64 or even the PS2 is their era when they look back on things with rose-tinted glasses rather than "ugh, look at those terrible old games." I can look at games like space invaders, frogger, galaxian, etc, and respect them...but to a younger gamer, they're simply primitive.

I think 1990 is gonna be the cutoff year. Super Mario Bros 3 is the only NES game this site truly loves; some of the others are respected, but SMB3 is the king of Gen 3 by far. The 80s will probably stink up the field for the most part; even recent years probably win unless it's 2014 or something.
