Even though it was more than a decade ago, I would totally go for a Van Helsing 2 - they even build upon an "evil" Dracula and made him a true antagonist.

I'm not a fan of that movie, but I definitely think that Universal could have made a sequel which connected it to the Mummy series. Any monster that died in Van Helsing was either expendable or known for coming back from the dead. If Universal wanted the joint series to be tongue and cheek, connecting Van Helsing and the Mummy franchise probably would have been the path to have taken.

That makes sense. Dracula would have worked as a launching pad too. There hasn't really been a traditional creepy Dracula for a long time. Just superhero shit.

Oh, man. I know.

I am so tired of sexy Dracula. I'm fine with them having a tragic vampire, but I personally would hold off on introducing Dracula himself and I'd make him a thoroughly evil and unsympathetic character. I'm not against Dracula looking good, but I want the sense of menace back. I don't want the sad eyed puppy dog who happens to kill people after dark. Again, we can have that character. He just shouldn't be Dracula.

I mean, I don't care for the direction that Universal seems to want to take.

Dracula is sexy and tragic.
Van Helsing is sexy and immortal. (Essentially a good Dracula.)
Monsters jump out at you, but then act silly or tongue in cheek in the same scene.

If Universal wants monsters to be what they were in the Brendan Frasier trilogy or the Van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman, than they're better off to simply make sequels to those films and join them together. It's not like every film in the Marvel universe has been a hit.

I'm just thinking in terms of practicality. If that's the direction they want to take, they're better off to build upon what they've previously created rather than start from scratch and rebuild the same house they built 13 to 19 years ago.

Nah. The new Mummy should have been a horror movie that was good. I have the impression it's neither of those things.

I agree with the tone, but not the choice of monster. If you're starting a joint universe from scratch, the Mummy isn't the one to begin with. Actually, now that I think about it, it only begged the comparison to the Brendan Frasier films because that's what's most recent in audience's minds. Had they done Frankenstein first and the Wolf Man second, nobody would have expected The Mummy to be anything like the Frasier movies.

To be fair, it probably would have been in Universal's best interest to have made this the fourth film in the Mummy series. Instead of creating a joint universe from scratch, they would've been able to have rightfully claimed that theirs dated back to 1999.

I find it hilarious that Brendan Frasier is the standard of comparison when his adaptation was a staunch departure from the original.

Mummy '32 = Dracula in the Desert
Mummy '99 = Indiana Jones as Played by Brendan Frasier

If I'm being honest with myself, the first Brendan Frasier Mummy was decent. But that still doesn't change what a staunch departure it was from the source material. If the new movie is an insult, it's not an insult to Brendan Frasier's interpretation because that was an offbeat self-aware interpretation rather than a straight update. It might be the interpretation that's best known with 90s kids and Millennials, but that doesn't change that it's a completely different story tied together by a couple of character names.

On Leathery Wings, the pilot episode, inspired me to draw a picture of the climax with the moon in the background and Batman hanging onto the Man-Bat with the grappling hook's cable wrapped around his foot.

There's a reason why I'm bitter about Batman being bitter. I can never see the character through adult eyes. It's always from the perspective of that young boy who was inspired to draw the hero he watched in that first episode. I still stand by that. The Red Skies Batman. The Dark Knight. The bitter Bruce Wayne of the future. That will never be my Batman.

My Batman will always be the hero from those first few seasons.

Mostly, I think it's because the Nerd does a better job of providing a standard of comparison. The Nostalgia Critic comes across as nitpicky and snobbish in ways that I don't think are intentional.

When the Nerd criticizes something, he'll often provide a point of reference by mentioning a game with better mechanics and similar content. He doesn't come across as unpleasible like the Nostalgia Critic is sometimes prone to do. If and when the Nostalgia Critic does provide a point of reference, it's usually a sarcastic comparison to a film by Stanley Kubrick or something from Hollywood's golden era. That makes him come across as extremely snobbish.

It's all in the presentation. The Nostalgia Critic often comes across like a Gene Siskel type who will run down anything he dislikes from a point of superiority. The Angry Video Game Nerd feels like a friend who is going into a humorous episode over an ultimately minor disappointment.

If somebody is posting a racially insensitive picture as a response, then that would most certainly constitute "digital blackface." But if they're getting mad because somebody posts a reaction gif featuring a black celebrity or because a white guy created an Asian avatar in his favorite MMO, there's no call to be mad about that.

It's just people pushing dirt to get traffic on their site and generate a little revenue with the advertisers.

I was just thinking yesterday about how American adaptations of Mario always stress the fact that he's a plumber whereas Japanese adaptations simply use it as a means of saying that he's blue collar.

ryKjQe1

I guess it shouldn't surprise me. Aside from using pipes to travel, the only reference to Mario being a plumber in any game I can recall is a mini-game portion of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga where you have to fix some leaky pipes. Considering that he's been in over 200 games, that's not exactly doing a stellar job of incorporating his profession into the gameplay.

I thought she was the maid.

She is, but the English version has Peach call her "Grandma."

I guess that does explain one minor plot hole in the English version. When Peach is captured, all the chambermaid thinks about is how worried the chancellor must be. And if you go and visit her before visiting the chancellor after rescuing Peach, she just tells you that you need to go and speak to him first. Not exactly the response of a grandmother who has been reunited with her captive granddaughter.

I played Super Mario RPG recently and Peach's Grandma is in the game.

bigjYsR

It got me thinking. Is Peach a human being or is she a mushroom person who happened to have been born looking human? The latter is more or less what I expected as a kid, so Peach's grandmother didn't surprise me. It's also the route the movie took with Daisy as she's a reptile despite her human appearance. (Because they're dinosaurs instead of mushrooms in that film.)

But then it dawned on me that that game isn't necessarily canon to Mario lore. What's more, "Grandma" isn't even a direct translation. She's given a title in the Japanese woman which is a term of endearment for older women. So that means she was probably never intended as a relative in the first place.

So that just begs the question. Do the mushroom people have a human ruler or is she a mushroom person who incidentally looks human?

They're both tongue in cheek. And they technically both involve invasions. Whereas Mars Attacks is a full scale war, Men in Black has Edgar attempting to trigger the destruction of Earth by stealing a McGuffin.

It's just that one is a good alien movie and the other is a hit and miss alien movie which falls just short of being worthy of recommendation.

I really have no idea what happened. The Secret of NIMH and The Land Before Time are fantastic. All Dogs Go to Heaven was pretty good too from what I remember. Then the 90s hit and I have no idea what happened. Rock-a-Doodle and The Pebble and the Penguin are fairly enjoyable if you're in a forgiving mood, but they're nowhere near as good as his films from the 80s.

Nostalgia isn't really a factor either as The Secret of NIMH is a movie I only saw about four ago.
