In comparison, the leaks were a continuous drip that would be hard to isolate in the polling data (and sexism of course would be a constant effect). I'm not sure which had the biggest overall effect, but take away any one and I'd be willing to bet a substantial amount that she would have won. Apparently there was a fairly large group of Senators on each side trying to come to an agreement to avoid it, but they couldn't come close. I was thinking about it, and thought of a potential solution (obviously irrelevant now, but still): Gorsuch, while very conservative, was at least at qualified nominee; it's easy to imagine Trump nominating someone worse next time. There was, therefore, a theoretical incentive for the Dems to "save" the filibuster for the next fight. They would counter, of course, that the GOP would just go nuclear the next time anyway. Could the democrats have agreed to drop the filibuster for Gorsuch in exchange for a rule change that made it take 60 votes not just for cloture on the filibuster, but also to remove the filibuster itself? I'm not positive that that's a thing they can do, but if so it would have solved the issue of not being able to trust Grand Master in Hypocrisy Mitch McConnell. --- Ralliers' determination can't even hold a birthday candle to the blazing flame of DpOblivion's winning spirit! |
