With the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Brawl has sort of been forgotten both in tournament participation and GameFAQs contests. However, just because it is forgotten doesn’t mean it’s weak. With that said I doubt Brawl will ever defeat Melee in a match again. Brawl might not even have the strength to beat Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U based on this poll: https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6235- However, that poll was pretty unfair to Brawl, as it was being squeezed on one side by Melee and the other side by Smash 3DS/Wii U. New consoles usually don't have a major game release in the same year they are released. Nintendo has had 6 different consoles with major releases in the same year they launched the console. The list consists of the following: NES - Super Mario Bros. SNES - Super Mario World and Final Fantasy IV Nintendo 64 - Super Mario 64 GameCube - Super Smash Bros. Melee Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Switch - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Besides the original Xbox with Halo: Combat Evolved, I can't think of any other non-Nintendo consoles which had a major game release for the console in the same year the console was launched. For this reason alone, the years which feature new console releases usually lack depth as developers try shift their resources away from the current systems in order to make new games for the newest consoles. 2013 is another year that suffers from the same issue as 2006, due to the release of the PS4 and Xbox One. After 1999, it's definitely true that the later years have more depth, but that is because gaming is far more mainstream compared to the 1990s and earlier. So we get a lot more games every year than the pre-2000 years have produced. Although the post-1999 years have more depth in the number of games released, those games generally have lower playrates than the games from the 1990s. I suspect due to the nature of Metacritic, their website is more likely to be visited by the types of people who would poorly rate any games that received high praise from critics. Here are the user rating scores on GameSpot and IGN: https://www.gamespot.com/the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild/reviews/ http://www.ign.com/games/the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild GameSpot - 8.09 IGN - 9.30 GameSpot actually provided the exact breakdown of the user ratings, so I was able to calculate an exact average. The GameSpot average was definitely higher than the Metacritic user average (7.50). The big surprise was the IGN average, which was higher than the GameFAQs average of 9.22. However, IGN gaves users more control over their game ratings, allowing people to rate games using any 0.1 increment from 0.1 to 10. The more finely tuned rating system of IGN's site probably contributed to their user average being higher than the GameFAQs average. We have 76 in critic reviews and 71 in user reviews. That's not a difference of 20+ points like in Zelda's case. That's a totally different situation. It's much easier for both professional reviewers and the actual gamers to agree on which games are actually bad than it is for both groups of people to agree on the amazing games. I agree that games with higher journalist ratings are bigger targets to get rated lower by the actual gamers, but that's not the only reason which may have contributed to the poor user ratings for Breath of the Wild. Now that I think about it, Nintendo has been losing respect among gamers over the last 10 years due to the Wii and Wii U. The Wii might have been Nintendo's biggest selling home console, but the total sales of the console don't reflect the system's actual success. Outside of the Wii's first party games, there were relatively few third party games of note for the system. The Wii U was easily Nintendo's worst home console (excluding the Virtual Boy), with many of Nintendo's biggest fans finding no possible way to defend that thing. Between the Wii and Wii U, overall respect for Nintendo was at an all-time low and there are more gamers that hate Nintendo today than at any point in Nintendo's history. Compared to UotY 2015 (before Steiner created the Board 8 Discord), my strength in UotY 2016 was a step down from UotY 2015. My strength in UotY immediately starting going downhill after the creation of the Discord chat. With the creation of the Board 8 Discord, far more people are now exposed to me. I think part of the problem is that I am a misunderstood user and the people who don't really interact with me are much more likely to form an opinion based on how other people feel about me.
