Different approaches work with different kids. There are times when I try to talk to him and he'll just scream at the top of his lungs. When he's already off to the races and isn't listening, trying to talk to him like an adult just plain doesn't work. That's unfortunate. Just for the record, my kids can be absolute terrors at times, they aren't perfect, but me and my wife have established a level of consistency with how we deal with the things that they do and do not accept them being disrespectful in that kind of a manner. Like for example, if one of our kids were to do that, let them scream it out. It's important for your children to see that that kind of behaviour will not phase you. It's important for your kids to see that you can remain calm, cool and collected in those kinds of high stress situations. I have a 22 month old daughter and a son that will be 4 at the end of June who are both very capable of being talked to like people and understand what we say to them. We have been punishing our daughter for her misbehaving for a few months and she fucking gets it. If she is doing something that she's not supposed to all it takes is, "Harley, do you need a timeout?" "no" and she stops. Now don't get me wrong there are times when my kids are a little extra defiant and the "reminder" that their behaviour will result in a timeout isn't enough, that's when she gets put in to a timeout. My son on the other hand, gets told to get into a timeout when he is misbehaving and if he doesn't then he gets a second one and another and another until he puts himself into a timeout. Now don't get me wrong, we don't just let him keep doing what he is doing until that point. We stop him from doing what he is doing and place him in an appropriate place for him to serve the timeout and put the onus on him to actually start serving it.
