‘North Korea in Europe’: Ukrainians baffled, angry & sarcastic after ban on Russian social networks

Ukrainians have been venting their anger after the government decided to ban Russian social media networks and popular online services. The move by Kiev potentially impacts the lives of millions.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on Tuesday to expand economic sanctions against individuals and companies which Kiev sees as a threat to national security. Among the 468 organizations targeted are popular Russian social networks, online services, antivirus producers and a popular business software suite.

The decision will affect millions of Ukrainians. For instance, the newly-banned social network site VKontakte is used by 15 million Ukrainians daily, according to the SimilarWeb traffic research site, while Odnoklassniki, another service blocked, reports 5.4 million daily users in Ukraine. Both networks are more commonly used than their competitor Facebook on the Ukrainian market.

Supporters of the decision in Ukraine branded the Russian networks “Kremlin weapons” that are allegedly used against their country.

“This is not censorship, and this is why. All the resources mentioned are directly controlled by the Kremlin/FSB [Russian Federal Security Service]. They have branches in Ukraine. They are powerful weapons of the hybrid war. They are also used to collect information about citizens of Ukraine,” popular blogger Ayder Muzhdabaev, deputy head of the TV channel ATR, wrote in a Facebook post.

Many others, however, are unconvinced that the decision was well-thought-out.

“This decision to ban Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki is strange and surprising,” wrote journalist Oksana Romanyuk. “I’m sorry, but it’s economic sanctions against our own citizens. Didn’t Ukrainian businesses use them for communication, to promote their goods? And I am not even speaking about millions of people who used them in their personal lives.”

“European values? Freedoms of communication, thought and expression? These things have nothing to do with the realities of present-day Ukraine,” wrote opposition politician Aleksandr Rikhlitsky. “Welcome to North Korea in the center of Europe!”

Journalist Vadim Chyorny pointed out that Ukraine would need to invest in internet infrastructure to enforce the ban, which would otherwise be easily circumvented.

“Enforcing the VKontakte ban would allow the Ukrainian regime to create infrastructure, which would eventually allow blocking domestic sites critical of this regime. Luckily, anything more complicated than signing a decree is too hard for the regime. Nobody would buy that equipment,” he said. “The next step is to ban Ukrainian guest workers from using the Moscow Metro.”

Many people resorted to humor to cope with the looming crisis.

“Poroshenko issued sanctions against half of Ukrainians, including his own followers,” wrote one user next to screenshots of the president’s accounts in the networks he had banned. “Did they downsize the president’s social media department?”

Some pointed out that the presidential website, where the controversial decree was published, had a button to share news on VKontakte – which has since been removed.

“They banned VKontakte for three years to protect national security. Finally, I can walk without fear in dark bumpy streets, or not be afraid of burglars, or not monitor the exchange rate for the dollar. I can feel the breath of safety and prosperity on my face,” remarked one woman, apparently more concerned about Ukraine’s economic troubles and public safety issues than with the perceived threat from Russia.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has described the CIA as “dangerously incompetent,” in response to the US agency branding him a “friend of terrorists.” The war of words started after RT asked the CIA to comment on reports of its hacking exploits.

“Dictators and terrorists have no better friend in the world than Julian Assange, as theirs is the only privacy he protects,” CIA spokesperson Heather Fritz Horniak told RT in an email.

The scathing response came after RT asked the CIA to comment on the assessment of former agency analyst Ray McGovern. He suggested that the capability to falsify digital fingerprints, exposed by WikiLeaks as part of its ongoing Vault 7 disclosure, cast doubt on allegations against Russia in connection with the 2016 US presidential election.

“Could it be that the ‘Russian hack’ was really done by John Brennan of the CIA? If I were asked to bet on that, then I would bet that that was exactly the case,” McGovern told RT’s Going Underground program.

“What does that mean? It means that these trumped-up charges against Trump, pardon the pun, are baseless,” McGovern added.

Brennan’s successor as CIA director, Mike Pompeo, sparked concerns in April when he suggested that WikiLeaks, which he described as “a non-state hostile intelligence service,” could be prosecuted for the publication of confidential US documents. He also attacked Assange and his associates, branding them “demons.”

Critics said Pompeo was setting a dangerous precedent, which exposed any media outlet reporting on leaks or the accounts of whistleblowers. They also criticized his comment that Assange “has no First Amendment freedoms.”

When asked for comment, Assange reiterated his earlier criticism of the US intelligence agency.

“The CIA is the world’s most dangerously incompetent spy agency. It has armed terrorists, destroyed democracies and installed and maintained dictatorships the world over,” he said in an email. “There are good men and women at the CIA but if our publications are any guide they work for WikiLeaks.”

CIA spokesperson Horniak also lashed out at RT for questioning the allegations of Russia’s interference in the US election.

“The responsibility of the Russian intelligence services for the election-related hacking is an established fact, but it is not surprising that an identified propaganda outlet like RT would attempt to muddle those facts. No reputable news organization doubts Russian culpability,” Horniak claimed.

In response, RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, said that such unquestioning obedience by the western mainstream media to the US establishment only leads to a decline in their popularity.

“The CIA & Co haven't bothered to present a shred of evidence besides their own claims, and are now actually boasting about how happy the ever-loyal press is to unquestioningly go along with the story,” Simonyan said, adding, “This is exactly why people have stopped trusting the mainstream media and are seeking out alternative sources of news and analysis.”

So far, no definitive evidence of the alleged hacking has been made public. A declassified report by the US intelligence community didn’t state that such hacking took place, but rather said the agencies had “confidence” that it did.

I'm sick of "patriots" who are either complacent, willfully ignorant, or actively supporting the dismantling of American institutions. I'm sick of people celebrating "earning Ws" as the country begins to burn around them. I'm sick of people refusing to see giant red flags because the person waving the flags is on their "team." I'm sick of people who claim to hate government but are all too quick to see government overreach as long as it's against "the other."

Remember when North Korea "hackers" breached several firewall layers at Sony, exposing gigabytes of confidential data, only for it to eventually emerge that it was all the work of a disgruntled Sony employee?

Apparently not, because the same plot line is being re-run all over again.

Two of the world's largest anti-virus companies said they are "looking into clues" that suggest a North Korea-linked group may be behind last week's cyberattack. Symantec and Kaspersky are investigating whether hackers from the Lazarus Group were responsible for infecting an estimated 300,000 machines in 150 countries. The two companies have said that "some code in an earlier version of the WannaCry ransomware had also appeared in programs used by the Lazarus Group, which researchers from many companies said is run by North Korea."

While we reserve judgment at the amusing possibility that North Korea could have brought a substantial portion of the world's computer infrastructure to a halt until there is some actual evidence, it is worth noting that said inquiries emerged shortly after the White House said that paying ransom money to unlock files encrypted by the global cyberattack does not work. It was not clear how North Korean hackers planned to convert bitcoin into any practical currency in a nation whose major banks have been barred from SWIFT.

The Arizona state senate voted 16-13 to remove all income taxation of precious metals at the state level. The measure heads to Governor Doug Ducey, who is expected to sign it into law.

Under House Bill 2014, introduced by Mark Finchem (R-Tucson), AZ taxpayers will simply back out all precious metals “gains” and “losses” reported on their federal tax returns from the calculation of their AZ adjusted gross income (AGI).

If taxpayers own gold to protect themselves against the devaluation of America’s paper currency, they frequently end up with a “gain” when exchanging those metals back into dollars. However, this is not necessarily a real gain in terms of a gain in actual purchasing power. This “gain” is often a nominal gain because of the slow but steady devaluation of the dollar. Yet the government assesses a tax.

Others are rolling back sales taxes on gold and silver or setting up precious metals depositories to help citizens save and transact in gold and silver bullion.

Russian Hacker Claims FBI Coerced Confession Over Clinton Cyberattack

A Russian man wanted by the Justice Department on charges connected to hacking U.S. companies now claims the FBI offered him immunity in exchange for accepting responsibility for cyberattacks targeting former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Yevgeny Nikulin, the alleged hacker, laid the claim to Russian media Thursday in a letter sent from a Czech Republic prison cell amid an international extradition battle currently underway between Washington and Moscow.

FBI agents promised Mr. Nikulin money, American citizenship and a free apartment for taking the fall over hacking Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, he alleged in a letter published Thursday by Nastoyashchoe Vremya, a Russian-language website.

“[They told me:] you will have to confess to breaking into Clinton’s inbox for [President Trump] on behalf of [Russian President Vladimir Putin],” Mr. Nikulin wrote, as translated by The Moscow Times.

“He was offered to falsely testify that he was cooperating in the attack on the Democratic Party,” defense attorney Martin Sadilek said Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

The FBI declined to comment.
