It's really telling the difference between the two series, actually, that Layton seems to accept the existence of magic a lot quicker than Phoenix, despite the fact that everything is supposed to have a rational answer in the Layton series, and Phoenix's series literally has spirit channeling.

Layton games don't have any situations where they would have the opportunity to work this way, since they're all basically like the Layton-based chapters of LvW. They're instant.

It would be fine if saves just left you at the actual point you were at, but they always throw you back like 1-2 minutes of dialog for no reason. It's the worst!

Haha what the hell this trailer is so weird - it's like some totally alternate history version of the game that never happened, nothing that happens in it is anything like the events of the actual game. So weird!

We'll talk about this more later I'm sure, but I do really feel like they missed out on having Phoenix and Layton actually face off against each other - they try to do it in L-4 but it feels completely half-hearted and forced. It's funny how Layton and Espella seem totally different in that confrontation in the beginning of the trailer - they're both a lot colder.

So one thing you don't ever really see much unless you have a view from the audience is the tech crew, which is often like 10 people strong, running around like fucking crazy to get shit ready in between runs, and from what I've heard it sounds like setting up new systems basically always comes with unforeseen complications. I don't know why it's so difficult, but it just is - there's a lot of moving parts back there. So yeah not having to hook up a Switch, a system that's never been run before at GDQ, is probably a relief!

One run I really want to give a shoutout to is Brothers. Kevin Regamey is running it. He's the lead guy at Powerup Audio, the crew that handles the sound work for every SGDQ and also did sound design for a bunch of games, including Crypt of the Necrodancer and Darkest Dungeon. I met Kevin last SGDQ and he's a super cool dude, he had planned to run the game last year but didn't submit in time, so it's awesome that he's gonna run it this year. Powerup Audio does an amazing job keeping things running smooth on the sound front at SGDQ so I'm a big fan.

I'm gonna actually have to play the game first though, since he said absolutely don't watch the speedrun until I've beaten the game. So I guess that's on my to-do list.

A system takes only a few seconds to hook up I am sure.

Ohhh helllllll noooooooo.

I mean, it might just be player preference that they're going with the Wii U version, or there might be a speedrunning related reason, but I'm certain not needing to hook up a Switch factors into this.

I was wrong actually, BotW was released early enough to be in (they DO have a hard cutoff - no game that's released after the submission period can be run), but it's really likely that nobody had a solid speedrun of it ready to go yet. The bigger surprise is that someone DID have Nier Automata ready to go.

Yeah, I actually ended up using a hint coin for the first time on that puzzle. Normally I don't use hint coins and just work on a puzzle I'm stuck on for a while, but I was mostly wanting to replay the court segments here, so I just brute forced my way through that one. I don't think I had to hint coin any others. Most of the puzzles in this game are a step easier than most of the puzzles you find in Layton games, with a few exceptions like that one and More Chalices (and also that stompy one) that do stand up with the tougher puzzles in the main Layton games (although there are FAR worse).

Speaking of music, LvW's soundtrack is really top notch in general, something I've noticed more on replay than I did before. One track that I've been really drawn to in particular though is The Courtroom's Magician -

One thing about it bugs me though - I can't figure out if it's supposed to be a counterpart to a normal AA theme. Like it's kind of an 'announce the truth' theme in a way but there's already an actual 'announce the truth' theme in LvW. The closest comparison I can think of is the way that AA3 often uses Investigation Core 2002 for a lot of its dramatic moments in trial in a way that also doesn't really have a counterpart in any other game.

It's kind of a bucket of cold water after L-3 - they spend the most time on this part of the game but it's probably the worst part! The Layton segments are pretty cool because we get Phoenix/Luke and Layton/Maya stuff and that's fun, but man, the trial is just not that intriguing. The pacing for me really grinds to a halt at that part, which is weird because normally these games do not lose their pacing at the endgame.
