So something similar: Japanese words like kamikaze, karaoke, Mount Fuji, etc. are mispronounced 99.99% of the time here in America. Even though everyone will understand if you pronounce karaoke as carry-oh-key, the fact of the matter is that that's incorrect. It's just a little mistake that people are familiar with, and therefore acceptable in normal conversation. Similar to how people will know what you mean if you say "for all intensive purposes", or "I could care less", even though it's grammatically incorrect.

I don't really care about the main subject of this topic, but this message made me raise an eyebrow so hard that I just had to respond. This is not true in any sense of the word, and I'm saying this as someone who speaks both English and Japanese as non-native languages.

If you stretch this logic far enough you could basically say that English speakers don't pronounce a single word correctly. Do you think every English speaker is pronouncing "government" wrong because it's a word borrowed from French? That is just absurd. And this happens with Japanese too considering Sino-Japanese vocabulary makes up about 60% of the words in modern Japanese dictionaries.

Imagine if you were to tell a Japanese person they're using the word (letter) wrong just because they borrowed the kanji from China and in Mandarin it means toilet paper. And again, this is just one out of... Tens of thousands of examples, across possibly every single language you can think of. Even the word (karaoke) is funny to think about, because the -oke literally comes from the word "orchestra", borrowed from English, and English borrowed it from Latin... And Latin from Greek.

I think those words you included in your posts stand out to you just because they look obviously foreign, but that's just because they're relatively recent loanwords. Just go through your own post and google the etymology of the "English" words you've been using and you'll see what I mean, and this applies to a lot of languages.

Sorry for such a lengthy post, I kept thinking of examples and just kept adding crap lol.

Just finished watching Mad Max: Fury Road.

It can be used for both. Consider terms like ( / yorugata ningen) for example, it's the Japanese word for a nocturnal person (night owl). I agree with ssjevot's observations.

While machine translation has undoubtedly gotten better in recent years, it still has ways to go, particularly when it comes to nuance.

Consistency is usually what most people fail at in my opinion, I'd say try to address that first.

I wish I could forget everything about it just so I could play it blind for the first time again. I will replay it for the thousandth time sometime this year most likely lol

Id also stay away from anime, and veer towards dramas if you want to watch stuff. Anime Japanese is. Never how people here actually speak. Youre going to embarrass yourself if you mimic that. The morning dramas are good if you can stomach them.

Its really hard to find good ways to learn Japanese, as hardly anyone outside Japan speaks it, but boy do so many internet people and youtubers love to think they are fluent because of anime. Please focus on what people who live there, or foreigners who have lived there ( not toured there) suggest.

This is bad advice imo. Just because you use anime for immersion doesn't mean you'll speak like an anime character. I don't speak like a sitcom or cartoon character just because I learned English watching Cartoon Network and Friends. Even if you were to pick up a bad habit or two, they get corrected pretty quickly once you start using Japanese in a real life setting.

The three dudes on the left are all foreigners who have lived there in the past or are currently living and working there and they all say immersing in whatever is fun for you (even if that's anime) is the way to go, they all immersed with manga, anime, VNs, you name it.

In my experience, people who do things that aren't fun for them for the purpose of learning a language are the ones most likely to quit. Your first worry as a language learner should be being understood, not whether or not you're embarrassing yourself.

Correct, don't do defense planets (planets with timers) if you're trying to unlock difficulties. Run through liberate planets (no timer, just liberate percentage) if you want to unlock difficulties or wait for the weekend and I'll be able to run you through everything.

My first MMO was called Tales of Pirates (originally named Pirate King Online) it was made by Chinese company MOLI in 2007 and published by IGG. It blew me away, it was the first time I could see and interact with so many real people in a video game, I'm a fan of pirate settings so I liked it instantly.

I have very fond memories of it since I got my younger brother and even my dad into it. To this day some of the theme songs give me a strong nostalgia feeling lol.

The official servers shut down in 2016 but I had stopped playing it quite a bit before that.

That scene legitimately made me feel bad, afterwards when Mike is searching his body and the guys throw him into the hole, it was done perfectly. The tune that plays in the background is harrowing.

I personally have no issue with them, I had Haitian classmates both in high school and university so my parents anti-Haitian sentiment didn't shape the way I view life, but I can't say the same for other Dominicans.

I agree with you that it would be for the best interest of both nations if we help them, and we have helped in the past during hard times (like the 2010 Haitian earthquake), right now things are very tense though. I don't know how things will turn out.

That's putting it lightly, we were under Haitian rule for 22 years. We celebrate our independence from them lol. That being said, our history is not that simple, I guess things never are these days.
