The strengths of SMW for me

- The cape is really fun
- The secret exits are kinda cool sometimes

But yeah for me the platforming and the tighter control for jumping and stuff is paramount.

I do like the game a good amount like you see a 6.5 and are like "oh" but that's just me using the whole scale.

It makes the platforming feel less interesting and the game pace slower

Lost levels I do have some pause. I'd probably need to replay it to be sure. Some infuriating level design in that one even if it controls better.

Just saw the Action 52 episode. Think he was very generous with it. I was expecting it to be below Athena when he said Athena was better than the best game on it-- I feel like 10 games that are a bit crummier than Athena and 42 games that are a LOT crummier should be a net negative not positive.

It's good but very overrated by the fanbase imo. The control is kinda floaty and it feels a lot less good than the NES games to play. To me this isn't just SMB3 vs SMW-- I'd play any of the four of them over this one.

If you've changed your living situation recently it probably is something to do with that I think. It might be something subtle like certain people you've been interacting with more lately or something. I'd try changing as much as you can back to how it was pre move and see if anything changes mentally.
