I don't usually hear it phrased that way, but think about duty-free shops in like airports - those are shops where you don't have to pay customs (import taxes).

I liked HK but I am slightly confused by the fervor for Silksong too considering there are so many good metroidvanias these days. Not sure why people latch onto that one so much.

There are plenty of good Metroidvanias but tbh Hollow Knight is just on a different level.

I tried CrossCode and had a lot of trouble getting the controls to work on Steam Deck (maybe because I don't own it on Steam? But it's also a known problem with the PC version and controller support). I have it on PS5 also so I can try it there instead, but at that point I might prefer playing Berseria instead

I've been playing Clair Obscur on Game Pass and once I passed 24 hours the XBox app displays my playtime as 1 day and this bugs me so much

Also on How Long to Beat I made a list of games in my backlog and it displays the combined time but uses days, like 5 days 10 hours or whatever. This is so unhelpful just show me hours

Oh this is a good one.

Aside from being unhelpful as a unit of measurement here, there's something that feels subtly more shameful about playing a game for "2 days, 2 hours" vs "50 hours"

To be fair FE4 already lets you have characters fuck their cousins/adoptive siblings a bunch, it just generally draws a line at actual siblings.

The word "practice" has a subtly different meaning in the sentences "I practice tennis" vs "I practice law" and they're going for the latter here. In fact to me "I practice tennis" sounds awkward without, like, a time frame and/or a noun for tennis to modify (like "skills"). I would probably never pick up on this in casual conversation though.

Is Nine Sols really faster? The bosses are I guess, but a lot of the time you just stand around and parry them because you're way too slow to catch them otherwise.

This is a personal issue for sure but I actually don't understand exactly why Hollow Knight became so popular. It's a perfect game for me because I don't like fast-paced action combat, so games like this where you just have basic attacks and maybe a spell or two, no combos, no parries and dodge rolls and hotbars with 5-6 abilities to juggle, etc, are great for me. But when it seems this game's playerbase also enjoys, like, Dead Cells, Hades, etc, I genuinely wonder how they consider Hollow Knight's combat to be engaging, especially when they say its "souls-like" (I could not play a Souls-like, they're way too hard for me, but running up to bugs and mashing attack a few times I can handle). Perhaps it's just different audiences but with the universal acclaim I got the feeling it wasn't.

I agree with Peaf that I think the combat is faster than you give it credit for, but otherwise I agree with this. Hollow Knight feels like a very niche game and I'm not sure why it caught on, though I'm glad it did -- it's the perfect game for me too and I bounced hard off of Dead Cells.

I think it's mainly called a Souls-like for the aesthetics and because it has corpse runs, not for the combat. For the record there are lots of very easy Souls-likes, though, especially 2D ones.

Wow, they just handed Trump an incredible opportunity to walk back his tariffs without admitting he was wrong AND look like less of a tyrant in the process. The only problem is that "look like a tyrant" is his one single policy goal, so of course he's appealing it to his own detriment.

Sorry, I probably phrased it badly but I was intending to commiserate, not give advice. Like what you're describing bugs me a lot too but I have to tell myself that I really don't know what's going on in anyone else's head.

This doesn't apply for all your examples though. It applies best to the example about online content creators already having an opinion about something before they start it and yeah that irritates me but I have to go "maybe I'm reading too much into their tone, or maybe they thought they wouldn't like it because of [whatever reason] and it turns out they were right, which is fair". I do this mostly for my own sanity but it's also a good check against my own, like, unconscious bias, for lack of a better term.

1) when i can tell from someone's tone they had already decided their opinion on something before they experienced/learned it, but won't admit that. instead, they grasp at excuses after the fact to justify their initial inclination. it's like their words are meaningless and i'm not interacting with a real person. the other component is that it's literally their opinion and it can be anything for any reason. just say you had an irrational gut feeling about it!

I feel this but also try hard to let it go because it assumes a lot of knowledge about what's going on inside other people's heads that you don't and can't actually have.
