Don't know why I didn't mention this last night, but every single time Eris warps someone's statement into something else, I've actually caught what the dialogue was pre-za warudo, so I am acutely aware of what she's doing. And it seems like Celeste is, too, which is really intriguing.

Finished the first investigation phase. The game does a great job integrating the player into the magic it introduces. It feels like Tyrion's thoughts are exactly my thoughts at pretty much all times, way more than any Ace Attorney protagonist you had to play as. It's really refreshing.

Unfortunately, I have COVID, and I feel like I have sort of a brain fog and it makes it really hard to concentrate for long periods of times. I wanna continue, but I'm not sure I can, so I'll be picking this up in chunks over the next few days.

Decided not to pull for Acheron. But I did pull for Gallagher to end up with nothing but Pelas when she's already E6.

Then I had a straggler regular pull so I used that and got Bronya's LC, literally back to back from when I pulled E3 Bronya this weekend.

Finished the first case. Took me a while, because the game is prone to freezing and crashing on me. No idea what's causing it. I verified the integrity of my files and tried a part where it hiccuped last time and it just straight up closed the game. Tried again and it never even stuttered. I guess I'll just be saving every few minutes in case it comes up more.

Anyway, enough about that, here's my thoughts:
  • The lack of animation is throwing me off more than I expected it to. Aria having one frame of holding her cane, and the next being on the floor as a clunk plays out feels like it should be enough to convey what's happening, but I can't deny that I really miss the fluidity of Klavier slamming the wall behind him and Simon peeking back at the defense with a smirk.
  • The contradictions are really gratifying to point out. Even though it was just an introduction, it felt like the game didn't want to hold my hand and point out what I should be looking into. It was still really simple stuff, and I never had to think about what I needed to do, but the fact that it trusted me with, like, 20 pieces of evidence in the first case is a good sign.
  • I'm OK with the magic stuff. I assume the emotion stuff will come into play more in the future. I get a Wright vs Layton feel from how the magic stuff is handled in court. Everyone still has a good head on their shoulders to know what you're talking about when bringing up inconsistencies in magic. I do think it's funny that it's well documented that this light up the room spell can only work for EXACTLY 15 feet.
  • The character design is awesome. I love the amount of detail put into everyone. Also, god damn, it isn't just Ruby, why is everyone in this game so hot?!
  • I really love the tone and atmosphere the game sets. It's strictly better than the AA series in the way it handles court proceedings. They specifically point out that, yeah, we've gotten to the point that you've basically proven your client is innocent, but the people get paranoid when someone gets killed with magic, and they're going to want justice. The whole system is set up so that they can prolong the process and keep you detained for as long as they want, and that's basically as bad as being found guilty. So you still have all the motivation to find the true culprit without it seeming so stupid and ridiculous. And the main character having a vendetta on this particular process makes perfect sense and lets you relate to him easier. It's extremely smart.

Eh. A smidge below average, I guess. A lot of the plot twists are really easy to see coming, and it takes a really long time for Phoenix to get there on the Ini/Miney one. I will say I enjoyed this case more on replay than I thought I would.

There's a really underrated moment during the second investigation day I want to throw out there, though. You're talking to Ini, grilling her about her sister, and she very suddenly drops her schtick and frankly says it would be impossible to catch her and gives a very subdued "ha ha ha". Then, when the dialogue goes away, there's no transition to another scene and nobody comes in to tell you something new. You're just left there with Examine/Move/Talk/Present on the screen with Suspense playing in the background. I actually love that moment a lot. It really sells the weight of what just happened so well.

I like how "girl dressed in red" has some red on her sleeve and that's about it. At least from the front, which is all Tyrion sees from his angle.

Going into my first trial without even getting to examine the crime scene? First major case is me defending a 19 year old girl? Main character's aspiration is to defend the weak? Considering the premise and the brief preview of court proceedings I saw earlier, it's kinda refreshing that it's not even pretending to be anything but a clear Ace Attorney clone.

I just don't hold Von Karma in as high regards as most other players. His motivations just don't make sense to me fundamentally. He jumps through extreme hoops through 80% of the trial, but as soon as the third day comes around, he just kinda gives up? He's super willing to fall back on convicting Edgeworth of DL-6 and that's it. Why? He got so upset that he won a case with an asterisk that he murdered a man.

I know the AA universe's views of legal cases is totally fucked up, but surely even if Edgeworth was charged with murdering his dad, having Yogi admit to the Christmas killing wouldn't be considered a full win, especially in his warped view of perfection. And he just.... lets it happen. For once, I share Phoenix's shock at something his opponent does to let him win.

I also have a major issue with the reveal of the mastermind behind the plot. It's just a throwaway line and then "wait yeah that IS him!" Same reason I don't like how he's revealed as the perpetrator of DL-6, too. Maya basically spells it out for you without letting you think about it yourself, and then when Mia gets involved, Phoenix just kinda rambles on his own to figure it out. I don't know how you change any of these three plot points to get the player more involved, but I just don't like how any of them are handled, and it's three of the most important moments in the game.

I have a lot of other minor quibbles I won't get into, since they're not all that important, but it just kinda irks me to the point that this finale case that has just so much going for it could be even better.

You've got the parrot in the shack talking about DL-6, the parrot being cross-examined in court, the guilty verdict being rescinded, and the Maya outburst at Lotta. Then the final evidence presentation is easily my favorite in the entire series. There's a ton to like here, but it still annoys me.

Man, here I felt like I was really gonna be going to bat for this case today, but most people are going even higher. I was way lower on the other two; I guess I'm just taking to heart the "5 is an average AA case" metric more than you guys?

1-3 legitimately edges out 1-4 as my second-favorite case in AA1. The lows are quite low, but the highs are absolutely incredible.
  • Cody breaking down on the stand and blowing the case wide open right after with the picture of Studio 2
  • Gumshoe busting in and saving the day
  • The Edgeworth face turn, leaving Vasquez bewildered
I haven't done an actual list or anything, but my gut feeling tells me all three of these are top 40 moments in the series for me, with the latter two easily being top 20, and that's a LOT of weight being pulled by a case 3 in Ace Attorney.
