Oops didnt vote yesterday. Ill do belated write-ups for those songs anyways now:

Outdoors - 7.5/10
not among my favorites from this game, but nostalgia holds it up

Head scratcher - 7.3/10
Flight of the Bumblebee if Rimsky-Korsakov was a jazz composer.

Kh2 sanctuary - 6/10
not even close to my favorite kh song. Its fine but not my thing.

Finally not pmd2 - 7.4/10
solid as usual coming from this series.

Cobalt - 7.5/10
twas a vibe

Chaotix- 7.5/10
where vgmc 19 got its namesake from. I love how much this emulates 70s/80s rock specifically. Almost felt like I was listening to Boston or the like. Cool.

Now onto todays songs

already gave my opinion on match 1 in its original day.

Uncanny Cat Golf - Golf Central: the background picture is peak. As for the song itself, its solid chiptune, but its not my favorite Ive heard from this game 6.5/10

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim - Ultramarine Deep: Wooo pan flute and sax. Its chill. 7/10

Hive Jump - Fungal Jungle (Mushroom Caverns): Its fine. I feel like it shouldve had more time to develop. A bit too short. 6/10

Shinsetsu Shiawase Usagi 2: Kairaku he no Invitation - Credits: It repeats that one instrument (idk the name) that is often used in tropical settings too often. The rest is pretty neat, especially the whistling at 2:33 that gives the piece a slightly western vibe. 7/10

Opoona - At Tokione: Eeey, the Opoona Contest winner. Nice to see it here. Fun little song. 7.5/10

Halo 2 - Blow Me Away: Pretty good metal song, but it's not doing much for me personally. 6/10

Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis - A.D. 1995 Story: Neat song. I really don't have too much to say. 7/10

ONGEKI bright MEMORY - Synthesis.: Not exactly my thing, but I won't deny this is impressive and really well-produced. 7/10

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE - TuNGSTeN: It's alright. Not a bad song, but it's not doing much for me. 5.5/10

The House in Fata Morgana - Giselle: I'm sure this works well in context. It's a pleasant, emotional song. As it stands, I definitely enjoyed it, but I feel like context would help a lot still. 7/10

At Tokione (7.5/10) > Giselle (7/10) >= 1995 (7/10) = Synthesis (7/10) > Blow Me Away (6/10) > TuNGSTeN (5.5/10)

Rush write-ups again go!

Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith - Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall:
Definitely like the flute lead. I do wish I liked the melody better, but oh well. Still solid enough. 7.3/10

WACCA Reverse - Obtain An Unused Whale In The Abstract Sea:
This feels extremely repetitive for the first four minutes with not enough variation to warrant the monotony. It finally switches it up after that, but with dubstep for some reason, which is something I'm not a particular fan of. It's got a fun beat, but the song overstays its welcome. 6/10

Ollie King - The Concept of Love (The Concept of Passion Mix): I like this better than I did in the Cameo contest (unless this is a different version? Not sure). Pretty catchy! I especially like the salsa (?) beat in the background that shows up occasionally. 7.5/10

Journey - Apotheosis: This is literally just peak. I especially love the beginning where it starts off slow and then quickly crescendos as the notes aim higher and higher. It really feels like reaching the summit of a long journey and finding what you came for - kinda like what this game is all about, huh? Definitely not the only time Wintory has managed to amaze me with how much emotion he can pack into one song. Simply beautiful. 9.3/10

Dead Cells: Fatal Falls - Fractured Shrines: Surprisingly enjoyable. 7.5/10

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - The Apex of the World (Rain): It's still pretty good, but I'm not enjoying it as much as I used to today. 7.3/10

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings - In the Sea of Fire ~Lydie: It's alright, but I can't get over the fact that the one background noise sounds like a sound effect from Paper Mario (it's distracting and unnecessary imo). Also, a better, clearer melody would've been nice. At least the percussion part towards the end of the loop is nice. 5.5/10

Tetrisphere - Extol: Synths and drum beat are nice. Rest of the song is sorta decent, I guess. Just like its opponent, it has that one weird background noise I don't like. 5.75/10

Limbus Company - In Hell We Live, Lament: I absolutely dreaded this song returning because of how much I didn't like it back in vgmc 16. I don't dislike it anymore, but it's still very much not my thing. The melody and instrumentation is nice, but that high-pitched vocalist is a big turn-off. The lower vocalist is nice, though. Mixed bag but leaning a little more positive than before. Previously around a 4/10, now a 6/10. Pretty good improvement, but I still would rather not listen to this song again.

Tetris the Absolute: The Grand Master 2 - TA Level 700-899: The beat is nice, but it's way too obnoxious for my liking overall.
Yeah, this is not for me. 4/10

BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light - Non-Linear Reliance: This song actively pisses me off. It would be a perfectly harmless song if it JUST DIDN'T HAVE THOSE ALARM NOISES. They aggravate me so much and ruin and otherwise fine experience. Sorry to those who like this song, but I really couldn't stand parts of this song. The good news for my sake is that at least it doesn't play throughout the whole song. 3.75/10

Dai Sengoku Rance - Alice Ragnarok (Opening): It's pretty good! I do feel it could use a point where the chaos slows down for even a little, but yeah, it's still nice overall. 7/10

Alice Ragnarok (Opening) (7/10) >>> In Hell We Live, Lament (6/10) > Extol (5.75/10) > In the Sea of Fire (5.5/10) > The Grand Master 2 - TA Level 700-899 (4/10) > Non-Linear Reliance (3.75/10)

Possibly the weakest day of the contest for me thus far tbh.

Back to (somewhat) short write-ups due to lack of time

Kururin Paradise - Neo Land: catchy. I just wish it was longer. 7.3/10

Utawarerumono Lost Frag - Kono Hoshi Ni Aru Inochi: the strings are nice. Not a fan of the vocals, but they dont bother me either. Good song overall. 7.3/10

Eschatos - SILVER LINING: gives mega man or 20xx/30xx vibes. Neat. Like the first song up today, I wish it was longer. The sound is also a little rough on the ears. Still good though. 6.75/10

Xenogears - October Mermaid: I can definitely tell its Mitsuda. I think Xarnax showed me this a while back. Not one of my top favorite XG songs, but still quite lovely, especially when the oboe (?) comes in around the 1 minute mark. 7.8/10

Gaiapolis - Song that Summons the Water Spirit - BLANCMUTE (8th.BGM):
8th.BGM more like 8th Board (sorry). Anyways, this sounds like it would be great in context, but Im not super into it in its own. Not enough melody to grab me. 6/10

Katamari Damacy Rolling LIVE - STARRY NIGHT FEVER: Ok, this is a groove for sure. I definitely like a certain *other* Starry Night from Wangan better, but this one is still great. Might be my favorite Ive heard from this series thus far and definitely among my favorite discoveries. 8/10

Nine Sols - Nine Sols: I'm surprised I gave this a whole 7/10 last time. It's good, but I guess I'm feeling it less this time. 6.5/10

Pokmon X/Y - Battle! (Champion): Pretty solid champion theme as usual from Pokemon. 7/10

GROOVE COASTER - Spring to mind: This sure was one hell of a noise concoction. Maybe it works well in context, but to me, it just sounds like wild animals in a cave section of the zoo making noises with a barely coherent rhythm in the background. Yeah, this isn't for me. 2.5/10

SaGa Emerald Beyond - Auld Lang Syne: Really nice, upbeat take on a classic New Year song. The song does repeat itself for a very long time before finally having much more variation 1 minute before the end, however. It needed to be much shorter imo. Otherwise, this was pretty good. 7.3/10

Super Smash Bros. Melee - Brinstar Depths: I do like how the atmospheric sounds combine well with the music. With that being said, I think nostalgia holds this one up for me more than anything else. I also personally prefer Brinstar (without the Depths) from the same game way more. 7.3/10

Stella Glow - Hikari no Metamorphosis: More anime vocal songs I'm not a fan of. It's not bad, but it's not for me. I'm in an especially irritable mood atm so that probably contributes to my finding this even less enjoyable than it would be otherwise. 5/10

Brinstar (7.3/10) >= Auld Lang Syne (7.3/10) > Battle! (Champion (7/10) > Nine Sols (6.5/10) >> Hikari no Metamorphosis (5/10) >>>>> Spring to mind (2.5/10)

Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island - Mount Jingara Descending: Strong Okami vibes. Japanese instruments are almost always pleasing to hear, and this song is no exception. Only reason this isn't being rated higher is because I feel like the melody didn't do much for me. 7/10

Friday Night Funkin': Hit Single - Silly Billy: FNF music continues to not be for me. The melody is catchy, but oh boy, everything else about this is just obnoxious and borders on annoying. 5/10

Senko no Ronde - assemble: Definitely an enjoyable vibe. The oboe (?) solo at 2:26 was a pleasant addition to the piece. However, I could've gone without the parts that sound like they have midi vocals. 7.2/10

Limbus Company - Hero: Mili at it again with the loveliest instrumentation accompanied by vocals I personally find insufferable. Definitely a mixed bag for me. 5/10

Balatro - Main Theme: Sure, it's a bit repetitive for its length, but it's such a chill vibe. Moving this up from a 7.2/10 previously to a 7.4/10

Choro Q3 - The Summer is Night "7/8": Oof, my two favorites of the day in the same match. I think this one is more interesting than the Balatro theme, so I guess I'll vote for this one. I wonder if it's actually in 7/8 time? I can't tell. dowolf says it's not 7/8, so if that's true, what is the real time signature?
7.5/10 (sorry for not giving it a 7.8 but I gotta be honest with my scoring. Maybe if it had too much water, I'd give it that score)

is it really 7/8? (7.5/10) >= Main theme (7.4/10) > assemble (7.2/10) > Mount Jingara Descending (7/10) > Hero (5/10) >= Silly Billy (5/10)

Earnest Evans (Sega CD) - Stage 6: It's pretty neat. I really don't have much else to say. 7/10

Toushin Toshi III - get the regret over: It's a good song, but I'm not super into it personally. 6.5/10

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE - The Moving Fortress: Surprised by how much I enjoy this. I usually dislike stuff like this. 7.3/10

30XX - At Her Doorstep (Aspera 1): I remember this from the Supra 2023 contest. It's pretty catchy. 7.4/10

MementoMori: AFKRPG - VI. THE SWORD: The beginning started off promising with the strong Celtic vibes. Unfortunately, the vocals brought it down a lot for me. Still a fun song, but I would've liked this so much more if the vocals were replaced with like a bagpipe or something. 7.2/10

At Her Doorstep (Aspera 1) (7.4/10) > The Moving Fortress (7.3/10) > VI. THE SWORD (7.2/10) > Two of Everything (7/10) = Stage 6 (7/10) > get the regret over (6.5/10)

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess - Plague: There is a certain amount of improvision in jazz and songs inspired by jazz that I think adds to the charm of the genre and songs like it. This one has areas that go a little too far into the improvision where it sounds too chaotic (at least to me). A prime example of this is the part at 1:10 where everything sounds like people banging on random notes.

Aside from that, I think it's a nice piece, even if those sections do significantly hurt my enjoyment. 5.5/10

Grandia II - FIGHT!! Ver.1: I remember another FIGHT!! song from this game being in the reverse ranking. That one was pretty solid, and so is this one. I do recall preferring the other one, however. 7.3/10

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - Sophisticated Fight: Nice and groovy but not one of my favorites I've heard from this series. 7/10

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance - Battle -alkalic acid rush-: It's good but feels too repetitive imo. 6/10

Charge Cycles - No One Cares About the Letter L: Not a lot to say about this one, but the iPad look-alike being in the background of this music playing makes me think of those vaporwave compilations on YT (I mean that in a good way). 7/10

Warframe - We All Lift Together: This sounds like the kind of song miners would make up and sing together to get them through the harsh working conditions. It's neat and original. 7/10

Out of the songs that have come up, its my second favorite in the contest. Realm Overworld coming in out of nowhere (because I didnt check nominations) was a pleasant surprise and my current favorite. Definitely a classic, beloved Zelda song for a good reason.

9-nine-:Episode 4 - DEAR MY WAKER: Its nice but Im not into the vocals personally. 6.5/10

Senxin Aleste - Stage 5 - Research Facility: This is the type of song that, 30 years from now, will be an example of retro futuristic vgm. Its well-made, but Im not vibing with it much. 6/10

Ar nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star - Ar-ciel Ar-manaf: The strings and flute are beautiful, and the vocals arent even really bothering me. I said before that I either really like or really dont like Ar songs. This definitely falls more into the former category, thankfully. Not my favorite Ive heard from the series, but it was an enjoyable listen. 7.3/10

SOUND VOLTEX III GRAVITY WARS - Liminality: This was pretty good! I don't enjoy this as much as the FELT song from Hindsight 2024 (Can't Look Away), but I'm still pleasantly surprised to be enjoying any FELT song at all. The fusion (?) jazz parts were really cool in particular. 7.8/10

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game - Another Winter: It's neat chiptune, but I'm personally not into it much. 6/10

You Have to Burn the Rope - Now you're a hero: I think it's an okay song that felt a lot shorter than it actually was. 5.5/10

Kirby Air Ride - Air Ride - Sky Sands: This was a little too short, but in spite of that, it was really nice! I love the bagpipes and flute. Definitely another fine discovery. 7.8/10

The Smurfs' Nightmare - Mysterious Planet (Another World): The part at around 0:55 that repeats itself sounds similar to the melody from Stickerbush Symphony (which is probably one of my all-time favorite video game songs). Definitely a huge plus. The rest of the song is fun, too. A delightful retro bop. Never expected a game about Smurfs to have such catchy music. 7.7/10

Dead or Alive 3 - Eternity (Kasumi): Its good. I really dont have a lot to say about this one, either. 7/10

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III - Spiral of Erebos: Good melody with some tasty horns. I especially like the string sections melody at 2:40. 7.4/10

Payday 2 - On the Road: When the song opened with a whistle, my first thought was, Ooh, Wild Arms much? This is gonna be interesting. Unfortunately, it didnt end up being as interesting as I thought it was going to be. I didnt care for the singing, which makes up most of the song. Aside from the orchestral instrumentation sections, there wasnt anything else I was super into here. Its nice but not really my thing. 6.5/10

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - Congregation of Ambition: Ooh, really neat piece. Probably one of my favorite discoveries thus far. 7.9/10

A really amazing day of music today after seven days with only one or two things I would rate a 9+...

imagine being sad about only having 1-2 things to rate a 9+ over the course of one week of songs. You must not be a very picky person, I imagine.

Meanwhile, I came across my very first 9+ song of the whole contest today. It only took me 99 songs and two-and-a-half weeks :p

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse - Battle - f8 One Who Stands Against God: The beat is good, and it does a good job of building an oppressive atmosphere. Otherwise, nothing else particularly stands out. It does its job fine enough, and thats about it. 6/10

Beastieball - NOW THAT'S! BEASTIEBALL!!!: Not the air horns
Other than being mildly amusing, this doesnt do much for me. 5.5/10

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Realm Overworld (Full Steam Ahead!): I freaked out when I saw today that this song got in. Finally, upon reaching the 99th song of the contest, we have my FIRST 9+! Wow!

This song is a classic for a reason. The pan flute is gorgeous, the melody is sweet, the banjo is killer, and the entire song perfectly evokes the feeling of traversing a vast landscape on a long train ride and being in awe at the beautiful scenery while the wind softly blows on your face. I dunno, Im not the best at writing descriptions. Anyways, easily the best overworld theme in the entire series imo.
9.5/10

Stretch Panic - EX-Rooftop: This was a little obnoxious to me. I can appreciate the funk, but otherwise, this isnt for me. 5.75/10

Senko no Ronde Rev.X - Last Stand: I definitely prefer the other Last Stand from Tyrion Cuthbert, but this is still solid enough. The synths at the end were especially neat. 7.2/10

Undertale - Your Best Nightmare: Not one of my favorite songs from this game, but its still pretty good. I dont think breakcore is usually my style, but this ones an exception. I especially like the seamless incorporation of Floweys theme into the mix. 8/10

Realm Overworld (9.5/10) >>> Your Best Nightmare (8/10) >> Last Stand (7.2/10) >> One Who Stands Against God (6/10) > Stretch Panic - EX-Rooftop (5.75/10) > NOW THAT'S! BEASTIEBALL!!! (5.5/10)

Heaven Burns Red - Shi ni Yuku Kisetsu no Kimi e: It's neat, but I'm not super into it personally. The vocals don't annoy me, however, which is nice. If Shiva (Glacier) is anything to go off of, I'm sure this song has some deep meaning to it that works well in context. Also, the strings are pleasant as always. 6.6/10

beatmania IIDX 21 SPADA - Adularia (Long Mix): This is an impressively composed piece. Not entirely my style, but it was enjoyable enough. The piano was especially nice. 7/10

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder (Sega CD) - Dwarven Ruins: The melody that barely even seems to exist is way too repetitive. It has a neat soundscape, but it's not without its issues, at least in my opinion. 5.5/10

The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- - Invasion: This is a little monotonous. The beat is nice, but it doesn't feel like there's enough variance here. A melody existing at all would've also been nice. 5/10

Arcaea - Nhelv: Cool rhythm, but otherwise, where's the melody? I'm also not a particularly big fan of dubstep. 5/10

Secret of Mana - Meridian Dance: It's neat but not one of my favorites this series has to offer. 6.75/10

Adularia (Long Mix) (7/10) > Meridian Dance (6.75/10) > Shi ni Yuku Kisetsu no Kimi e (6.6/10) >> Dwarven Ruins (5.5/10) > Nhelv (5/10) >= Invasion (5/10)

White Album 2 - Todokanai Koi: Oh hey, vocals I dont mind. Nice. The instrumentation is pleasant, too, especially that electric guitar. 7.5/10

Alice Gear Aegis - Assault of Hexed Faith: Oh hey, the Hindsight 2024 song. Wow, yall really went for both Hindsight Alice Gear songs, huh? This ones pretty good, and theres a high chance itll end up in my top 10 in Hindsight. B8, you are brainwashing me into slowing coming to like 13 Sentinels-type songs. I wont forgive you for this /j
7.5/10

Umamusume: Pretty Derby - transforming: Ive never heard a single song from this game Ive liked aside from the three more traditional Japanese songs Player0 showed me once. This ones no exception. It just feels like generic anime music to me, and Im not a fan of the vocals, either. Its tolerable, but thats kinda it. 5/10

Fire Emblem Awakening - Conquest ~ Conquest (Ablaze): Not one of my favorite songs from this game, but I can appreciate the incorporation of the main Fire Emblem motif into the piece, even if it feels a little forced. Has a decent build-up, too. 6.75/10

Outburst 4D - FUTURE EXPRESS: pretty groovy. Nice piece. 7.5/10

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - Highbrow: Really long but really impressive. Theres never a boring moment in this, even if Im not always a fan of the melody sometimes. This match is really tough! I think because I prefer the composition of the opponent marginally better, Ill go with that one. 7.5/10

** Pokmon Trading Card Game - Club Master Duel**:
it was neat. 7/10

** Planetarian - Human Warrior**: also neat and less repetitive than its opponent, especially in the second half. 7.3/10

I continue to not have much time for this so super short write-ups are all youre getting.

Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizons - Second Wind - Sonic Mvt.:
Its pretty cool even if I like it slightly less than before 7.4/10 (was a 7.7)

Rift of the NecroDancer - Amalgamaniac:
Its fun. I like the synths. Marginally prefer its opponent, however. 7.4/10

Zenless Zone Zero - Original Me: I like this a surprising amount considering its a ZZZ song. 7.3/10

Doom: Legacy of Rust - The Shores of Heaven (Sanguine Wastes): kinda repetitive but decent enough I guess. 6.8/10

Frequency - Worst Mistake: derp character on thumbnail. Anyways, its neat. Feels a bit repetitive, however. 6.8/10

Secret of Mana (2018) - Did You See the Ocean? :
Angels Fear is still my favorite song in the game, and it remains not even close (although I have yet to hear the remake version of this song). Its still good enough anyways, and it gets bonus points referencing the aforementioned song right as the last minute kicks off. 7.3/10

Minecraft Sonata - Leap the Precipice: I definitely dont absolutely love this song as much as everyone else, but Id be lying if I said this wasnt a well-composed piece. Bonus points for sounding like Battle Against a True Hero and for that Moog City reference at 3:11. 7.3/10

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights - North: copy-pasting my comments from last year:

I have a special history with this song. Not only was it one of my favorite discoveries from the 2021 contest, but my vote was the last deciding factor in it moving onto round 2 as I ended up voting it SECONDS before the deadline. Muse Dash - Thirty Million Persona: The part at 1:27 almost sounded like it was going to lead into Beware the Forest Mushrooms from Super Mario RPG (which is a song I love). Otherwise, it didn't do much for me, and I'm not a fan of the vocals. 6/10

Hollow Knight - Mantis Lords: I've probably heard this before, but if so, it's been ages. I'm going to count this as a new discovery because I don't remember it.
As for the song itself, this is fantastic! The harpsichord feels like a good pick for a "lord" of some sorts since it gives off an air of maturity and power. I also love how the harpsichord is immediately followed by an intimidating orchestra. My only complaint is that it isn't longer. Definitely one of my favorite discoveries thus far. 8/10

Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- - Seimeisen: I remember having to listen to another song from this OST, Juvenile, for Supra's 2021 contest and not liking it that much. Yeah, this one's no different. In fact, I probably prefer the other one. At least that one had a cool harpsichord part.
Overall, I'm not a fan of the vocals or the melody. I can appreciate the fact that it's a well-made and probably well-thought-out song, but this is not for me. 5/10

Stellar Blade - Silent Street (Battle): Ooh, a sythn...pop (???) song? This is kinda cool. I don't even dislike the vocals here. It's decently catchy. 7/10

Arknights - Lord of Fiends: This song is quite dramatic, but not overly so. I actually somewhat like the vocals; they're powerful and passionate. 7.3/10

Thunder Force IV - Metal Squad: I always love seeing the oscilloscope view; it really shows how hard a song hits at any given point. This was pretty cool even if I would have appreciated a different instrument lead. 7.2/10

Ano, Subarashii o Mou Ichido / Saisouban HD - Twin Moon: The flute is really nice. Chill piece. 7/10 (raised from a 6.75 previously)

We Love Katamari - Bluffing Damacy: It's a bit repetitive, but it's also cute and endearing. 6.75/10

Skeleton Boomerang - Disco Necropolis (Graveyard Stage): Graveyard if you remove the "G." 7/10

Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness - Craggy Coast: PMD music coming in solid as always even if I will continue to reiterate it is nowhere near peak like Temporal Tower is. Anyways, this particular one reminds me of a Mario and Luigi song for some reason. 7/10

Dwarf Fortress - Fortress Mode: This one's quite relaxing. I really like acoustic guitar. However, I don't feel like this one goes anywhere. It just sounds like someone doing some improvisation. 6.5/10

Legaia 2: Duel Saga - Lost Forest: Ah, yes the runner-up in the Supracord forest contest and one of my vgmc 17 nominations. Pleasantly surprised to see it return. It has a really lovely soundscape. The Devil Game - Another Soul: This was surprisingly enjoyable. The melody is really nice and has that one kinda chromatic scale going downwards part (1:41 is one such example) that reminds me of the OOT title theme and the original Pokemon Red/Blue/Green opening. Definitely one of my favorite discoveries thus far. 7.8/10

Fire Emblem Fates - Alight (Storm): This is great! It's funny how Another Soul was my favorite discovery, and this easily dethroned it immediately afterwards. Still, how could you put two of my favorite discoveries next to each other? The taiko (?) drums mixed with the slightly oriental-influenced melody remind me of Okami in the best way possible (the part at 0:30 has the same note progression as the Sun Rises! I think..). This was a delight from start to finish. 8.5/10

Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future - Passage from Genesis: Wait, a third favorite discovery IN A ROW?! Has this ever happened before to me, like ever? Much like the other Ecco song, this is ambience I can really get behind. It's just so beautiful and elegant. However, while I appreciate the added instrumentation to mix things up, I'm actually not that big a fan of the guitar or those background noises that comes in later, but it doesn't bother me much. The melody also does get repetitive after a while.

Overall, the song has some shortcomings, but the stuff that's good is REALLY good. Still a (lower tier) favorite discovery overall. 7.7/10

pop'n music 8 - Beyond the Bounds Mitsuto Suzuki 020203 Mix feat.Sana: Pop'n music tends to be very hit or miss for me (either a sub-5 or an 8.5+ on score), and every big miss happens to do the best of all the other Pop'n songs in the same contest (or any contest for that matter). Just my luck...

With that said, how do I feel about this one? Surprisingly, this is one of those rare in-the-middle Pop'n songs. I don't feel strongly about it either way. I definitely don't dislike it; in fact, I like it. But it's too repetitive for me to really love it, either. Yeah, it's good. In the middle for Pop'n but leaning positive. 7/10

Yume to Iro de Dekiteiru - Yume to Iro de Dekiteiru: Oh wow, a weeb song with female vocals I don't despise. Nice. I appreciate the enthusiasm the singer has. Nothing particularly wrong with this song even if I probably won't come back to it after this contest, either. 6.5/10

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - -(LYSINE)-: Oh, hey, the song that lost round 1 on Supracord and wasn't even brought back for the Return of the Underdogs contest despite people admitting they were shocked it lost round 1 back then. Fascinating. Anyways, I really like the part where the melody plays the same note repeatedly and then does the same thing an octave higher. It's neat. 7.3/10

[-Aka-] - To the West: Not one of my top favorite songs from the game, but it's still very pleasant. Definitely still a solid song from a very good OST. 7.6/10

MyHouse.wad - memory=entryrrrr/////: It's neat ambience, and I'm sure it works really stellar in context. However, it lacks memorable substance on its own. 5.5/10

RayCrisis: Series Termination - .BLUE -To Live Again on Earth- (C1, D1, D2, E1): It's an interesting piece. I especially like the last 1/2 of the song where it has a clear melody and a nice drumbeat. The beginning was a little shaky, though. 6.5/10

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) - FLAME CORE ~THE CAVERN~: Like its opponent, it has a nice drumbeat. However, I really don't like those echo-y sounds in the back. I get they're there for context purposes (fitting for a cavern), but they just make the song feel kinda off. Decent overall though. 6.5/10

CHUNITHM LUMINOUS PLUS - Re-Fiction-O: Yeah, this is all over the place and just kinda annoying. The backing and the vocals are strange and lack a sense of coherency. Not for me. 3.5/10

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Boss Battle Song 2: Not one of my favorite songs from Brawl. The bells and organ are nice and remind me of Castlevania. Otherwise, not a lot else to say. 6/10

Uncharted Waters 2 - Catalina: It's pleasant. Has some fun energy. I definitely like Princess Chris and Southern Twilight a lot better as far as UW songs go, however. 7.3/10

Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance (C64) - Central Park: I don't like that long note in the middle of the piece. It was annoying and felt a bit unnecessary. Some parts also felt a bit repetitive, especially at the beginning. Otherwise, it's nice chiptune. 6.75/10

Storm Assault - Stage 2: Eh, this was way too all over the place. I really don't like the melody, either. The synth additions were cool, though. Definitely a mixed bag. 5/10

The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance ~Memories in Ice, Tearful Figurine~ - Tokyo: Long ass title. Anyways, I'm still a liiiittle salty this song marginally beat out one of my nominations, causing me to barely miss the top 4, but whatever.

It's overall good with a solid buildup; I like how it repeats the melody with more instruments on the second go. However, it could be a little less repetitive. It's not even my favorite from its short OST (hi, Encounter in the North).

HOWEVER, that bass is REEEAALLY good. Like, it's actually peak. It and the guitar solo make up a lot for this song's shortcomings.

Edit: wtf the part at the end with the background runs is actually really good. I somehow didn't notice that from all prior listens. Bumping up the score just for that. 7.4/10

Fitness Boxing feat. HATSUNE MIKU - Let's Mikusercise!!: Definitely a Vocaloid song of all time...I've heard Miku songs I've thoroughly enjoyed (i.e. Triple Baka), but this is not one of them. It's obnoxious and a bit annoying. However, it's still weirdly catchy at times. 5/10

Waterworld (SNES) - Mission Theme 02: Why yes, I'm doing these write-ups out of order specifically to save my easy favorite of the day for last. I literally freaked out earlier today when I heard my favorite Waterworld song actually got in. The rest of my commentary is going to be a copy-paste from my RTVGM write-up because it still holds up:
I know Diving is this game's fan favorite song, and while I do really like that song, idk I feel like I like this song slightly better. It's just consistently better than Diving for me, even if Diving has higher highs (Diving also has lower lows). This is just so groovy with an incredibly banger bass. While I do wish it had slightly more of a melody, I can't help but really enjoy listening to this song over and over again because its beat is just so damn catchy

Cities Skylines: Campus - Anywhere (Where Youre Not): Reminds me of 2000s Disney rock. It's pretty neat even if it feels a bit repetitive. 7/10

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile - Baladiums Drive: Every Klonoa song I've heard thus far has been nice but kinda boring. This is the first one that has actually caught my attention. The pan flutes (?) mixed with the prominent percussion is just so fun. My only complaint is that it isn't longer. 7.9/10

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Flags of Brave: Oh hey, one of my favorite discoveries from the 2024 contest. Kinda sucks my nomination had to go against it in that round. I was victorious, but at what cost?

This definitely sounds like a musical song with the orchestra and the passionate singer. I might actually like this better than the English version (the one in the contest). Actually, that reminds me, I need to show this to my musical-loving friend. Defying Gravity vibes for sure. 8.3/10

DoDonPachi Blissful Death Re:Incarnation - Taido (Kenichiro Fukui Remix): I mean, it sure is rhythmically good. But like, it's not standing a chance against one of my favorite 2024 contest discoveries from the Supracord server. 6.6/10

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE - Recursion: I wasn't paying attention to the time signature, but there's gotta be something related to recursion in here...Anyways, while I'm a particular fan of the slower parts in the beginning, it gets really good at the end in particular. 7/10

Payday 2 - Break the Rules: Nice 80s rock vibes. Fun song! 7.5/10

Mekazoo - Sinful Syncopation: Pretty catchy. Don't have a lot else to say about it. 7.2/10

Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories - Library: Probably makes for nice ambience, but it doesn't work too well out-of-context imo. UFO 50 - Porgy - Abyss:: It sounds like a song that would play in a detective game. Definitely has an air of mystery to it. Personally, while I find it interesting, I also think it's way too repetitive with a lack of a solid melody. It's alright. 5.75/10

BanG Dream! Girls Band Party - Georgette Me, Georgette You: Hey, I actually don't mind the vocals...much! The instrumentation is kinda nice too. Not bad. 6.75/10

Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Vast Ice Mountain: Like most PMD music, its a really nice piece, even if nothing will come even remotely close to topping the absolute cream of the crop of PMD2 that is Temporal Tower. 7.7/10

Melancholy of a Noisy Girl: The song doesn't sound very melancholic, lol (quite the opposite, in fact). The squeaky noises in the background aren't that pleasant to me, but it's otherwise a very cute and catchy song. Perhaps I should check out this OST someday; everything I've heard from it thus far has been solid. 7.5/10

Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore - Durridin Forest: The classic RPG-sounding flute alongside those mysterious bells is always a welcome addition to any fantasy forest theme. The bass is also very solid. Otherwise, not much of a standout, but it's still good overall. 7/10

Phoenotopia: Awakening - Caves of Mul: This is what I had to say about this song last year, and it still holds up:
This is really solid tbh. Very well-produced song that is easy on the ears and pleasant to listen to. I'm surprised Aka, given all the hype it got pre-contest and back in BOST 6/vgmc 17, has to go up against a song this tough. I thought it would get an easier match, but oh well. At the very least, if Aka loses, it will be to a respectable pick.
Yet another "I couldn't vote for this when it lost because it faced my own song" moment, and on the same day of the contest no less. Now that Castle of Sand is no longer in play, I'll be happy to vote for this song this time around. 7.7/10

Crypt Killer - Scratch "P": I can appreciate the chaotic energy this piece has, but it feels like it goes a little too far in that direction and lacks a sense of coherency as a result. It's somewhat decent, but it could've been better. 5.2/10

MementoMori: AFKRPG - XIII. THE BUD: As I say about a lot of vocal songs, the instrumentation is beautiful, but I personally can't get past the vocals. I love the strings, flute, and acoustic guitar, and the melody is quite nice. I'd really like this if it were instrumental with the vocals being replaced by like a violin or a woodwind. 6.3/10

Sonic Adventure - Believe In Myself ...Theme of "MILES": The vocals feel a little off-tune at times, at least to me, specifically on the high notes. Otherwise, it's pretty fun. 6.4/10

Kaze no Ne > Caves of Mul > MILES >= THE BUD > Scratch "P" >= Artaria

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Kaze no Ne: I always liked this song, but I forgot just how good that percussion is. It makes an already good song really stand out. The flute in the background is the cherry on top. It's too bad that back in the day, this had to face my own support, Secret of the Forest, which is from one of my favorite games and OSTs of all time. Now that Secret of the Forest can no longer compete, I'll proudly vote for this song this time! 8.4/10

Metroid Dread - Artaria (Frozen): I'm sure this works really well in context, but it's not that memorable on its own. 5/10

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak - Resonance of Ray: I love emotional strings. This was pretty cool overall even if I don't have a ton else to say about it. 7.5/10

beatmania IIDX 23 copula - AZISAI (Long ver.): Holy shit, dubstep I don't utterly despise? This isn't too bad, even if it's still not my thing. 5/10

Daytona USA - The King of Speed: The beginning of this song could be a meme. Anyways, it's pretty funky. Neato song with a killer beat, even if I do find the vocals a little grinding on the ears in the last half of the song. 7.1/10

Chess (PS1) - Track 2: Okay, I was worried when I saw the upload was 10 minutes long before I looked at the loop point. I guess you all couldn't find a shorter upload, eh? lol
It's got an interesting soundscape with some nice percussion, but it's not really my thing. 6.5/10

Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos - Title: What's this? A song in VGMC I actually RECOGNIZE!! Wow!

Anyways, the beginning of this song always makes me laugh. The way it goes from an amusing but unassuming melody and then hits you with that fortissimo blast out of nowhere is just really funny. You know what else is funny? That box art. The sheer joy in that guy's expression as he fucking T-POSES on all of us is amazing. 7.6/10

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido - Volcano: There are plenty of other volcano-related vgm I like better than this (for example, Grumble Volcano, Fire Island Volcano, etc.), but it's decent enough. A bit repetitive, but nothing outright bad about it. Super Mario 6.4/10

Solstice > Ray > I am SPEED > Chess > Volcano >>> Beat. Mania.

Edit: forgot to post my votes lol

I have like one album I haven't started, but otherwise, most of my other rankings are complete. Apologies for the last minute stuff. I'm aware I did this last time, and both times were because I was super indecisive about doing the ranking in the first place until I finally decided to do it with a couple or so weeks left, haha (on top of just being really busy). I'll try be more decisive next time.

Sorry for the wait. I have just been quite busy. Within the next few hours, I should be done. Otherwise, I'll send in what I have since I do have over the minimum number of albums ranked.

I've been silent on this for this entire time, but I actually did decide like a week ago that I'm going to try this again, but with a different approach from the last time:

for fun, I'm going to give each album a rating (out of 10) just like I do with video game music. This rating is based primarily on my own enjoyment of the album, but it CAN be based on the album's message too, especially as a redeeming factor for an album I otherwise don't like.

Part of the reason why I'm making a big emphasis on the message of the albums, particularly if I don't like anything else about any of them, is because I regret not ranking TPAB higher in the last ranking. My home community probably knows me as one of the resident "rap haters," and for a good reason given how much I've expressed my dislike of it in the past. So it should come as no surprise that I ranked TPAB significantly lower than what everyone else ranked it despite the album's critical acclaim. However, as even I stated in my commentary on the album, I really appreciated its introspective messages and its addressing of real world issues. I feel like I should've given it more credit and rank it higher for that. It is because of this that I'm putting a lot of weight on an album's message, especially if I don't like the album otherwise. Doing gives me a lot more respect for an album I otherwise wouldn't like, and it's always interesting looking up people's interpretations of any given album's message.

(main contest rep, 2021 contest)

Spiritwish | Lake Alue | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60nSixhLGpc

I am allowed to rank even if I don't submit anything, right?
Also, I'd be willing to do a small number of rankings. Probably not the full list though since I'm too busy to do that. Plus, we're doing a ranking event of our own on the Supra server very soon so I will have to focus on that as well as this.
