My plan right now is to use Duolingo to learn the basics of hiragana, katakana, and basic phrases. At some point, Im going to move on to another tool like Anki or something else. Ive already started using a Youtube video to help me drill hiragana characters because I felt like I wasnt learning them well enough with Duolingo alone.

The one good thing that Duolingo does is the Hiragana and Katakana specific lessons.

But the better way is to write them every day. You can also buy posters and hang them on your walls so you can constantly be surrounded by them. Hiragana and kayakana can be pretty quick.

Duolingo is kind of crap with non-roman alphabet languages. Plus the Japanese grammar and pronunciation is unnatural.

Id also stay away from anime, and veer towards dramas if you want to watch stuff. Anime Japanese is. Never how people here actually speak. Youre going to embarrass yourself if you mimic that. The morning dramas are good if you can stomach them.

Its really hard to find good ways to learn Japanese, as hardly anyone outside Japan speaks it, but boy do so many internet people and youtubers love to think they are fluent because of anime. Please focus on what people who live there, or foreigners who have lived there ( not toured there) suggest.

Most people will say use Anki, as it has the most accurate and useful learning tools for Japanese. You could also find online teachers, but. Thats hard to find a Japanese person who actually understands the needs of a foreigner learning Japanese. The way they learn Japanese is not the way a westerner learns a language.

Anyway, use Anki, write in a notebook, repetitive phrases. Its boring but it will help you if you dont have anyone else to speak to. Duolingo is for freshening up, but it will not teach you good Japanese. Also, HelloTalk will introduce you to many native speakers who you can chat with, as long as you dont act like a creep and try to date them, like some guys do.

For years ive had a similar prescription. It was kind of just ok, made it so i could at least read signs. My vision is very bad, so i always just accepted that it was that way.

i upped the prescription by just asking for it. It was fast. Got bigger frames and lenses too. I still cant see super well. However, my fatigue and general eye strain is much better. Have i been using the wrong kind of glasses for most of my life? Yesterday and today, I felt great. I can focus on my vision more, i dont feel exhausted by straining, and i also like how they look.

has anyone else experienced this?

3 is the same style as 2 just with updated graphics and new monsters. They changed a few things but for the most part everything you can do in 2 you can do in 3.

In 4 they started to rpg-ify the game. 5 was whack and I never did beat either but I'd like to go back and revisit both of them.

There was a 5?

I played the DS game. I think it was just Monster Rancher 2 (the title) but it was not like the PS1 game. I think it used a number generator to make monsters. I dont think I enjoyed it very much.

This is one of the most nostalgic PS1 games for me. Probably my most played game on that console. I have been playing the remaster on the Switch. It is a perfect port, and even has the Pocketstation support. As for inserting CDs, it has a database where you can search for albums, and it works that way. Its nice since I can use CDs that I knew had secret minsters, but didnt own.

Anyway, the graphics in this game have that gritty, kind of jank ps1 feeling. You know, where things clip into itself, textures are stretched out, and all the canned animations. I love when Suezo licks the gorillas butt in Errentry, which I dont think was intended by the devs, but that is Suezos default attack animation, which it uses. This era was so experimental and wild, I love seeing all the things this game pulled off. It looks really good for the time.

I wish we could get more straight ports of ps1 games.

How do you define "hard" sci-fi, exactly? I love Trek, in all its flavors, but if someone asked me to recommend them hard sci-fi, I'd say to go watch something like The Expanse.

You can't exactly call Trek soft or space opera, it's not like that space wizard franchise, after all. But I've just never filed it away in my mind as a "hard" sf series.

Personally, hi-tech, interstellar locations or futuristic travel, no medieval stuff, aliens, advanced robots or ai, no classic swords and shields stuff.

Xenosaga, yes.
Star Ocean 2, no. It has scifi elements, but it meanders in classic tropes

As far as i know, SO1-3 are very old European settings. Forests, caves, swords, magic. One character uses a blaster sometimes, but he is a fish out of water.

Rogue Galaxy is a huge shame. It starts promising. Spaceships, sandworms, etc. The space pirates dont do anything space piratey, besides calling themselves that. They just gather treasure on stereotypical planets themed after stereotypical jrpg tropes. Jungle. Beach. Temple. There is the one town that is futuristic, but for some reason, nothing else is. And that town has two dungeons which are just steel halls and a dank prison stage. I dont know why they couldnt stick with the scifi stuff, and devolved into tropey stuff.

Star Ocean has scifi objects, but for some reason they still insist on sticking to ye olde European settings for these games, which baffles me.

Rogue Galaxy hardly had anything to do with space pirates, even thought the characters claimed they were. They just travel to stereotypical jrpg locales, like jungles and ancient ruins. There is one futuristic town with two of the worst dungeons in gaming. Another town is a ye olde European town, yet again.

The Xeno series, specifically Saga, is the only one that I feel embraced it the whole time. Spaceships, future tech, aliens, robots, androids, guns, computers, AI, VR, all that stuff. No peasant towns, no haunted forests, no goblins, king arthur swords, or knights.

Why is this such a rare thing for JRPGs. You would say it is because of their culture not having much scifi, but then explain FF7, Evangeleon, Xeno, etc.

SE has been so out of touch for the last two decades. Not only are they chasing trends that they dont understand, but they dont get shy their own successes worked. Ff7-10 worked because they were completely original, they looked gorgeous, and offered experiences no other company was giving. Now today, ff16 is just a lesser version of an action game, with the most boring setting one could imagine, and a sidequest system that puts a browser game to shame.

The only reason they are alive today is because they made an MMO that doesnt look like a ps2 game, and ff7 nostalgia.
