I just remember something near the end of the game that implied the members coming from an earlier timeline.I think you're thinking of when all 13 members start to fade away because their "time ran out" or whatever. All of them returned to where they were after that, but some of them were actually from the present -- just not specifically that world -- so they returned to whatever other world they were on before that. While the ones actually from the past returned to the past. If I remember correctly, it's because Young Xehanort was sort of anchoring all the other members to that space-time because he was the one who gathered them, but as he was existing as just a heart he could only stay in the present for a limited time before the paradox of multiple Xehanorts occupying the same space-time forbade them all from coexisting, and so when he was expelled back to his own time all the others were dragged away with him. It's been a lot of side quests to flesh out the slums, and some segments that weren't in the original to give more screentime to Avalanche's members + introduce new characters.
