The Rock was a MUCH better in-ring performer than he's often given credit for but I think that what Austin lacked in comparable athleticism, he more than made up for with superior execution, timing, and "ring psychology." He played like 3 uninjured seasons in his career. He got hurt in Portland, came back and won a title. Won MVP the next season, but got hurt before the playoffs. Then he sat out the next year because he protested how Portland treated injured players. He went to the San Diego/Los Angelee Clippers for 4 years and was hurt for the majority of each season. He signs with the Celtics, plays every game, wins Sixth Man of the Year and another championship. Then he gets hurt the next season and retires afterward.Yeah, to date he is the only NBA player to have won League MVP, Finals MVP, and Sixth Man of the Year. His career arc was highly unusual and quite frankly, probably wouldn't have happened in the modern NBA. | El_Marsh 05/27/24 2:56:19 PM #10 | Walton and his predecessor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were the faces of THE most legendary run of success in men's college sports, namely John Wooden's UCLA Bruins that won 7 straight NCAA National Championships from 1967-1973.
Walton didn't have the largely incomparable professional career that Abdul-Jabbar did, but when healthy, he still managed to snag a league MVP and was the focal point of one NBA championship team (the 1977 Portland Trailblazers) and contributed as a bench big for another one late in his career (1986 Boston Celtics). Despite such legendary accolades, I'll always best remember him as one of the voices of "the NBA on NBC" in the 1990s when pro basketball took a massive leap into the national consciousness. His laid back persona and colorful, off-kilter quips provided a stark contrast to the passionate and matter of fact presentation of Steve "Snapper" Jones, creating my personal favorite basketball commentary pairing ever. I think the actor portrayed him just fine, they just didn't know what to do with the character much of the time and that made him less appealing. In that version of the movie, Yzma planned to unleash a god of darkness called Supai to blot out the sun because she blames the sun for aging her skin.I can't remember, did Yzma have another a song in the movie? Nathan's banned him because he refused to sign an exclusive deal with them. During the first year of the "impasse" he showed up as a spectator in the crowd (right in front of the stage, of course) but was more or less a distraction because the crowd was chanting for him, but of course he couldn't compete. He eventually got on stage (after the contest was over) but before he could do anything, he was bumrushed by security, slammed against a wall and handcuffed....the spectacle's biggest star (by far) to that point was treated as an interloper at an event that HE helped make a television draw. He was never going to agree to their terms after that and it ended his career at the biggest (American) spectacle in competitive eating. Funny enough, the event lost some sponsorships (that they've since regained) over their treatment of Kobayashi, so when the $$$ is telling them that they fucked up, you know that they fucked up. Imo, despite Chestnut having the most titles (perhaps in part because of Kobayashi's ban), I think Kobayshi is still the biggest "name" that the...um...sport...has known.
