While Youtube might be more helpful for something like a platformer or action game, I can't imagine it'd be that helpful for an RPG, or something more strategy based. I don't want to sit through however many minutes of a Youtube video just to know where all the armor in a FF game is located. Probably one of the reasons behind that increase in the poll that Luster posted.

I was down there this evening. Interesting. Not much different than what you'd expect. There seemed to be a couple hundred people in the park where they were, which seemed pretty good considering it was cold, and kind of wet.

I listened to some of the "General Assembly" meeting they have twice a day it seems. They didn't have mikes so they had a system where groups of people would repeat what the people were saying in waves so that it made it to the back. Pretty cool effect. Does anyone know if that's typical of these things, cause it seemed to work pretty effective on an aesthetic and community level? Not any real intense speeches. Some lady was talking about nuclear power/weapons when I came up, and the next person was a former economics writer for The New York Times who gave a little speech about the real causes of the economic recession/debt (Wall Street/Bush tax cuts/Bush's wars). Then it seemed mostly organizational stuff. Explaining about how meetings run/what certain signals mean (people have various hand signals to express pleasure/displeasure with what's being said), the order of speaking, (soapboxing is for the end of the meeting), and then people from the various working groups were speaking when I left.

Wednesday is Student Walk Out Day to protest high tuition costs! So keep that in mind!

The difference between the FF and SMB examples is that FF1's loss to FFIV despite being indirectly stronger, came from it relying on name recognition in all of its non-FF matches. It represents the entire series in a way.

This is true with SMB to an extent as well, but it goes even further. SMB doesn't just represent Mario Bros. It represents gaming as a whole. It is THE video game. That's what people didn't get when they took LOZ over it in 2009, and it's something that people will underestimate at their own cost. That's something that, IMO, SMG won't be able to overcome, when it's already down 60/40 indirectly.

I'm not sure if nostalgia is the ultimate factor having to do with 2-D Mario selling better. There's a lot of people buying games now that either grew up and started gaming after that, or are newcomers to Mario with the Wii. Not everyone's been gaming since the NES.

I'd give Nader and Colbert's numbers to Obama/liberals.

A few months ago I did a series of head to head polls between Obama and others, and he beat Ron Paul by one vote. He won against all the major current Republican candidates though, and several past Republican presidents. Then he ran into Eisenhower and got stomped 90-10.

I wouldn't give the Colbert numbers to anyone. If they're likely to joke vote then, they're likely to joke vote now, regardless of what their politics are. And the point of me posting the poll was to show that Obama barely getting a majority now isn't a signal of a sea change on Board 8 or anything, since it's on par with the numbers he got back in 2008.

The thing I don't get about 4chan is why they rallied/stuffed for Battletoads for 24 STRAIGHT HOURS in a random POTD we had about which NES game people wanted on the Virtual Console, but never did that much for Bidoof or Mudkip, who actually had momentum in their 2007 matches.

I know a lot of this GOP support would dry up if Ron Paul weren't the candidate, but it's got to look bad for Obama if he can't even get a majority on Board 8.

Master Hand was not a joke character! Nobody at the time implied they were voting for it because "lol it's a glove. They were voting because they really liked Smash Bros. That was the consensus at the time, and It's just revisionist history to claim otherwise.

The same logic people are trying to use for saying Mario/Bowser could beat Link/Ganondorf is the same logic people have used to argue for Mario to win anything, and it hasn't worked without pulling Link out of the way.

But history is built into the very definition of the world rivalry. By definition it's ongoing. There's nothing like that for "favorite character."

Or you could mean Sephiroth will make Cloud stronger, even those nothing will change because it's the exact same fanbase voting for both of them, while Ganondorf won't add anything to Link using... the same (but opposite) logic?

Sephiroth and Cloud clearly have a more divergent fanbase than Link and Ganondorf, and the respective matches between the two of them should be proof enough.

OOT being so much stronger than MM doesn't mean Zelda fans aren't drones. It could just be that there are a lot of people who aren't drones who are voting for OOT. I'm not sure that's the case, but I don't see any proof one way or the other.

It's best rivalry, and Cloud/Sephiroth is a much more compelling rivalry than Link/Ganon. I think that is enough to reverse 51/49 and then some.

I would think the phrasing of this as a rivalry benefits Link Vs. Ganon instead of Cloud Vs. Sephiroth, since the former has a lot more history behind them which people would value in a rivalry.
