Actually, I haven't posted a "solution" either, so here you go: Just let people be and accept that file sharing is unstoppable. Take cues from Valve and (to an extent) Blizzard and earn profit by being awesome to consumers. Simple as that.

But it's wrong (assuming the game is not out of print/unavailable)*. No one's entitled to free entertainment.

*Or if the game's creator has been dead for 25 years, IMO at least.

Nope, they own the games they bought, so they can legally remove it. Like if you buy a game, you can legally throw out the OnLive coupon.

I guess technically they own it, although I would assume that when stores obtain products that they sell, they have to sign agreements that they won't tamper with the product before they sell it to the consumer.

So you're trying to say strong characters getting into the contest...is a bad thing?

If they're never going to be tested, then yes. Imagine if 2005 was 128 characters and Kefka/Vercetti were in a fourpack with a high end midcarder. We would have lost out on a close match between the two of them, and it's not like the character would have done anything interesting against Crono to make up for it.

Yeah, you'd never see something like a Noble Niner losing in the first round in this format!

Crono Vs. Yoshi still would have been very close!

And lower seeds winning two rounds only proves one more problem with the 12 hour format. Strong characters ala Mega Man X and Zelda not being snubbed potentially rob us of more interesting matches. Had John Price been someone just a little more popular, MMX's presence would have robbed us of a potentially close 4v5 match, and had Travis been a more popular 7 seed Zelda's presence would have robbed us a potentially close match against Altair. Now neither character that MMX/Zelda beat was popular enough to lose out on a close match, but it's easy to see where such a situation could arise.

12 hours = 128 entrants = more variety = more chances for cool stuff happening = everyone's stuff gets a chance

Who cares about variety if they're not doing anything? Not a single one of the bottom seeds made it out of the second round in the past contest. I care way more about having an exciting match last 24 hours than seeing some random game no one cares about get blown out in the first round. Everyone's stuff gets a chance to be seen, but that doesn't mean it will do well. Just have exhibition matches or 12 hour matches to determine the the bottom seeds if 64 entrants is not enough. I do not want to give up the chance for the next Mario Vs. Crono, just because three people are dying to get some obscure adventure game character in. How is reflecting on the presence of a character in the contest as good as a 2,000 vote comeback?

And the more rounds you have the more likely it is that the same characters will make the same rounds year after year, since the more entrants they face decreases the chance that you might have a flukey character make the Sweet Sixteen or strong character go out early.

I don't get the love for 12 hour vs. 24 hours. The proportion of boring to entertaining matches stays the same. Great matches are made less great by the time limit, but boring matches aren't made less boring, they're just made shorter.

Hey I totally agree that votals on Gamespot have the potential to be higher. I just don't see the point in spending all this money if they're not even going to try to do that..

Anyways, WCC probably has this. Or maybe that Mass Effect guy. I'm not familiar with the series, so I don't know anything about him. I think that Luigi and Yoshi are probably the most popular indirectly (Mario is popular everywhere and Mario and Bowser didn't look any weaker on Gamespot when compared to here, IIRC), but WCC can probably rally past them.

The only way I see it losing is if:

A) A joke character manages to edge it out, but then fails against the much stronger Mario crew
B) WCC has a cakewalk to the finals. Freeman and Kerrigan built up momentum to their rallies with earlier close matches, IIRC.

What we need to do is tell CBS Interactive to stop running s*** contests that no one likes nearly as much as ours, and which get less votals, considering how long the rounds stay open.

I mean this is just bizarre. Why would you spend more money (the Gamespot prizes are higher than ours, IIRC) on a bunch of contests that are less popular?

There was an article in The Atlantic, possibly a couple of years ago, about how business management degrees are not that useful. It was written by a guy who got a business job after majoring in Philosophy, and he said that that had prepared him just as much about how to deal with people as any of the business literature did, which mostly dealt with gobbledygook buzzwords. The reason why people with MBAs from Harvard are so sought after is because only the cream of the crop is let into the program, not necessarily because of anything you learn in the program itself. That's the argument the article made at least.

Only devout communists think this.

Ok? Well then ~15% of America is devout communists. I'm just quoting poll numbers here.

He has support among moderates but not independents, which is a bigger group I think, and which he won by a large margin in 2008. I think the basic difference between moderates and independents is that moderates want the government to be basically similar to what it is now, while independents want it to be radically changed. So, Obama did very well among independents with his hope and change campaign, but since becoming president he's been all about pragmatism, which would naturally alienate them.

Independents were only 29% of the electorate in 2010, as opposed to 38% which were Moderates, albeit there's obviously some overlap. I see numbers amongst moderates as useful not so much in terms of how they play into the numbers game, but in terms of determining how well various political groups' messaging is working, since moderates are the ones most likely to be swayed by current arguments and not as much stuck in their ways.

Obama only won Independents 52-44 in 2008. I think the reason independent conservatives voted for him in 2008 was because all of the New World Order conspiracy group just votes for a "new" person whenever they come along, thinking that things will be different, but since nothing will ever be good enough for them a backlash develops. Obama's numbers dropped amongst moderates as well in Obama Vs. Romney polling, but they went mostly to options like "Unsure" and "Other." Romney and McCain both polled around 40%.

Deny. I mean, it's possible, if not particularly likely.

That being said, negative/anti campaigns are not a good idea nationwide. Most incumbents that have been upset have been upset by people who ran positive campaigns on their own vision. They were not angry campaigns, pitched as mostly an alternative to the president, like virtually all the Republican campaigns are likely to be minus Huntsman and Paul. Obama might not be popular, but a majority of American either approve of him, or think he is too conservative, so I don't think the Republicans have any sort of advantage there. Considering he has +10 approval rating amongst moderates any sort of negative campaign is likely to not have much traction on a messaging level, either.

Create a third party Progressive Party, but then nominate Obama as their presidential candidate, and someone else as the Vice-Presidential candidate who can go out and stump for the progressive cause in the election.

A) It would not result in a third party splitting votes for president, since all of Obama's votes for both tickets would be combined (I think so at least. Bryan's votes in 1896 are never listed separately.) Hell, it might even increase Obama's numbers from people who normally vote third party.

B) It would allow the left a chance to get their voice out without having to rely on Obama, and gives them a potential bargaining chip policy wise. "We can deliver Obama the votes, if he promotes progressive policies."

C) People would be able to show their support for the left without worrying about vote splitting, giving them an opportunity to be heard, and giving them some solid numbers which could be built on with momentum. If the numbers are high enough, they might even get a spot at the Vice-Presidential debate.
