Topic | Best OST Contest: WINNER and Post-Mortem |
Kenri 12/15/11 2:52:00 PM #19 |
* For the mostpart, did you enjoy the contest?
Yes.
* Now that we've done the contest, with the six-song, six-round format, how well do you think it works out? Any particular tweaks you'd suggest?
WB went fine. LB had some serious issues in the last round, that 1/2/3 vs. 1/2/3 match should just not have happened. On any level. I don't even the like the idea of best 2 of 3 matches in general, but if you had to go with that then 1/2/3 was seriously the worst possible choice there. Get that trash out of any climactic match. Not fair to the nominators and especially not fair to the people who have to listen to it. >_>
* Was the loser's bracket worth running? A few games got some measure of redemption, but we did end up with the same finals as the winner's bracket.
Honestly? No, it really wasn't. I don't know how viable this would be but I'd prefer just sending the R1 losers to a losers bracket, but if you lose in R2 or later, tough ****. This gives every OST at least two songs, so it allows for second chances without going the route of "oh well the entire LB is pointless because CC is gonna come in at the end and crush everything".
* Anything else about the rules you think should have or at least could have been handled differently? * Were you happy with the nomination period and the method in which games were chosen for the bracket?
Going to combine these two because my answer applies to both.
IMO frontloading a nomination should have been heavily, HEAVILY discouraged. You can't really ban it outright because what counts as frontloading is subjective, but yeah. It seriously ruins the point of the contest. (Thankfully, it didn't cause any real problems that I can remember, but I still say to just nip that in the bud.)
Also, nominations had an issue where someone could come in early, nominate Game A, make a really awful lineup for it, and then refuse to make any changes. I know that in a few cases you changed the nominations yourself but the system should have been set up such that you wouldn't have to. This could probably be fixed just by allowing people to run competing nominations. For example: I don't like User1's lineup for Game A, he won't take my advice, so I run my own competing nomination for Game A. Users can only support one lineup per game and whichever has the most at the end of the nominating period gets into the contest.
* Any particular grievances you want to get off your chest -- either in terms of the results, or how the contest was administered? (Be civil, but feel free to let me have it.)
Not really, at least none that weren't covered above. I had a few issues with some of your calls, but whatever, it's just a difference of opinion and it's part of the contest. Overall you did a good job.
* Do you want to see this contest return next year, either as-is or with modifications? Would you prefer somebody else run it? (Or at least count the votes for it!) Would you have liked to take a more active role?
Should definitely return. But yeah, enlist a backup vote counter. Two counts are always better than one anyway.

The fact that it sold over 10 million copies - and to a core audience, by your own admission - seems to imply that the fanbase is pretty okay with rehashes overall.

Kenri 12/14/11 12:03:00 AM #20 |
No. Rehash lovers like you definitely make up the minority of pokemon's fanbase. this is why the pokemon fanbase is ever shifting (except the nostalgia fanboys from RBY's days) and new kids constantly replace the 11-14 year-olds who start outgrowing the franchise.
I'm pretty sure this is factually incorrect.
Like, Nintendo did an actual survey of the people who bought HGSS and determined it was generally not a game purchased by those in the age range you're suggesting.

Concentrate is actually my favorite track from Frozen Synapse. IMO it should have been earlier in the rotation though, I dunno if it's strong enough for R4.

Kenri 11/02/11 5:34:00 PM #22 |
Doesn't he have it if you choose Charizard?
Yeah, but is there any reason to believe that's the "canon" choice? I'd be much more inclined to believe Yellow is canon, which means Red gets all three starters and Pikachu (which matches up with his team in GSC/HGSS) and Blue doesn't get any of them.
Like, I don't actually have an issue with it, and in fact support pics with Charizard/Blastoise (because they'll help my bracket <_<), it's just sort of weird to see everyone immediately jumping on Blastoise as Blue's signature Pokemon when he only has it part of the time in RBY/FRLG, and doesn't have it at all in GSC/HGSS.
...Actually, if Red vs. Blue makes it to matches with rotating pictures, it would be really cool to give them three or four otherwise identical pics with only the starter combinations changed.

Kenri 11/02/11 2:09:00 PM #28 |
Care to go into detail on the Ivan Ooze thing. Think it was mentioned before.
To heavily, heavily summarize it (it took place over the course of like 5 topics): during Ipkiss vs. Broly, it was argued that because Ipkiss could reality warp humans (like cops or something) to defeat them, he could do exactly the same thing to someone like Broly, even though Broly is many orders of magnitude stronger than normal humans.
Ipkiss actually won that match, and the next one was Ivan Ooze vs. ...I forget who, but someone who clearly outclassed him. So people argued that because Ivan Ooze was able to imprison Lord Zedd in a snowglobe, he could do exactly the same thing to anyone. Hence, "Ivan Ooze. Snowglobe."
It then went on to make cameo appearances in a bunch of other matches, especially stupid ones involving reality warping. <_<

- We, the voters, decide what happens in this match. This means Sarda does not have free will in the MPFC setting, so the simple fact that this match is happening means he has to lose. Foul has affected things outside the boundaries of his own universe before so it's not much of a stretch to see "real world" people determining things like this, especially since the matches of the Host established that the voters exist even within the canon of MPFC, so it's not really 4th wall breaking, it just looks like it.
This is at least as good as any argument made in any match regarding The Host, and just as game breaking.
Quick, convince me not to be convinced by it!

A weakness that is irrelevant in a brawl in neutral terrain.
Can't beat cosmic menaces: Yuki Nagato, Mad Jim Jaspers, Time Trapper Prime Can't beat passive barriers: Highly intelligent fighters like Batman or Kurama can probably find a way to make use of this even on neutral terrain Can't beat machine-mounted weaponry: Samus, any mech pilot Can't beat multiple opponents: Red, any summoner, possibly any Bleach character (Zanpaktous being separate entities and all) Can't win at things other than fights: Probably doesn't come up, but I'm not ruling it out, given characters who have the ability to force others to play games. Dunno if MPFC has had any of those though.
To say nothing of the fact that he could become physically superior and still lose, for example against Little Mac, who is used to beating characters who exceed him in all parameters.

Kenri 10/28/11 3:22:00 PM #159 |
This guy. The Host fights like this guy, for MPFC purposes. Think as if the opposing entrant was facing this guy. How is this so hard to understand?
Probably the part that says:
It is not known what the upper limits of his power were, or if they could generate an adaptation powerful enough to match cosmic menaces such as the Anti-Monitor, the Monarch, Imperiex, or Mordru. While Nemesis Kid could adapt to defeat robots, it was never shown if he could adapt to defeat passive barriers such as a prison cell, spaceships and vehicle-mounted weaponry firing upon him, or an opponent at anything other than a physical level (such as defeating them at chess or outhacking them on a computer).
Which is suspiciously absent from The Host, because that would be a rather large weakness!
Furthermore, from that article, it seems like Nemesis Kid would just gain the ability to cast counterspells or something against GANON, not use his omnipotence to find entertaining ways to dick around before ultimately winning or losing according to the desires of a third party. Really, The Host - as he has been portrayed in this contest - is about as different from the character described in that article as Samus Aran is from Sarda. There is no comparison to made here.
