red sox 777 posted... Looks like CT got 13 out of 14 #1 votes, but its victory margin over #2 actually went down due to RBY becoming the de facto #2 with LTTP's loss. I wonder why we got fewer voters than before too.
Yeah, I had been a bit disturbed by the lower vote total as well. But good catch--I would've assumed that the lower victory margin was more a result of the lowered total, but there were 19 votes last week and Chrono Trigger won by 33. 33/19 is...something that's greater than 1.5 (too lazy to calculate right now), whereas 21/14 is exactly 1.5.

As per usual, KCF left something important off his initial ballot. Speaking of oddballs, LMS hasn't voted yet. Add to that the way the RPI sometimes disagrees with the overall consensus of the voters (like having SMW below 20th and rating FFIX as the highest-ranked FF game), and things could get really interesting really quickly.

red sox 777 posted... I propose a more complex explanation instead of the simple one. The voters are keenly aware of LMS and are deliberately strategically voting to produce results that confuse him.
I enjoy this theory, especially because it has the side effect of confusing me too. (Well, this week, anyway. I have to admit, every time a new week of the schedule comes out, I look at it and project what my ballot would look like if everything followed my expectations and adjust it whenever my expectations are wrong. So much happened this week that the game I expected to be voting at #25 next week is unlikely to even crack my "last five out").
LinkMarioSamus posted... It's kinda scary to think Galaxy 2 could possibly end up with a 9-3 record, but I have a feeling that it will emerge victorious in both of its upcoming gauntlets.
Nah. Against Donkey Kong Country 2, it's very possible, but I can't foresee it beating RBY.

Oh, no, this win was very impressive, but RBY's built up a better resume. In previous weeks, though, RBY was far and away ahead of Chrono Trigger; this week they're pretty close. RBY has another marquee match coming up in Week 11, though.

I'm actually with LMS on this one. This falls outside the range of "variance". A close match between two games going one way one time and the other way another time is variance. A game getting blown out by a game it previously blew out is not "variance", it's f***ing WEIRD!
Also, customary post expressing happiness and/or sadness about progress of ongoing matches. (I honestly haven't even looked at them yet.)

LinkMarioSamus posted... Well Final Fantasy VI beat Galaxy 2! And Galaxy 2 has been looking like the strongest Mario game this week!
I forgot to mention it earlier, but I honestly have a feeling that the narrow upsets pulled off by Majora's Mask and The Wind Waker were, again, the result of anti-Nintendo guys supporting the "more mixed reception" option in those matches.
Furthermore, this now means that every match featuring two Mario platformers or two Zelda games ended in the younger game winning. Yay?
You've got a point. Intraseries matches have largely been going in favor of the younger game. Let's break it down. (I'm not including matches between Mario platformers and Mario RPGs, but I'm not sure if maybe I should include FFT vs. other FF games)
Matches that favored the younger game: 1. Super Mario 64 defeats Super Mario World 28-27, Week 5 2. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess defeats The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 27-24, Week 5 3. Sonic Adventure defeats Sonic CD 23-13, Week 5 4. Paper Mario defeats Super Mario RPG 29-17, Week 5 5. Super Street Fighter IV defeats Street Fighter Alpha 3 25-12, Week 5 6. Final Fantasy IX defeats Final Fantasy VIII 32-24, Week 5 7. Super Mario Galaxy 2 defeats Super Mario Galaxy 27-23, Week 5 8. Super Smash Bros. Brawl defeats Super Smash Bros. 33-21, Week 5 9. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker defeats The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 27-26 (OT), Week 5 10. Final Fantasy X defeats Final Fantasy IX 32-21, Week 6 11. Super Mario 64 defeats Super Mario Bros. 3 26-25 (OT), Week 10 12. Mega Man X defeats Mega Man 3 33-12, Week 10 13. Metal Gear Solid 3 defeats Metal Gear Solid 2 25-19, Week 10 14. Super Mario Galaxy defeats Super Mario World 25-22, Week 10 15. Super Mario Galaxy 2 defeats Super Mario Sunshine 34-13, Week 10 16. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask defeats The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 27-25, Week 10 17. Mega Man 9 defeats Mega Man Legends 30-14, Week 10 18. Pokémon Black/White defeats Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal 28-24, Week 10 19. Sonic Adventure 2 defeats Sonic Adventure 26-20, Week 10 20. Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum defeats Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald 32-15, Week 10
Matches that favored the older game: 1. Super Mario RPG defeats Paper Mario: TTYD 24-23, Week 2 2. Suikoden II defeats Suikoden III 31-8, Week 3 3. Metal Gear Solid 3 defeats Metal Gear Solid 4 29-16, Week 5 4. Mega Man 2 defeats Mega Man X 26-22, Week 5 5. Suikoden II defeats Suikoden V 25-10, Week 5 6. Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow defeats Pokémon Black/White 31-21, Week 5 7. Mega Man 3 defeats Mega Man 9 27-9, Week 5 8. Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal defeats Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen 34-9, Week 5 9. Metal Gear Solid defeats Metal Gear Solid 2 23-17, Week 5 10. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 defeats Marvel vs. Capcom 3 25-23, Week 5 11. Mega Man 2 defeats Mega Man Legends 33-12, Week 6 12. Sonic 3 & Knuckles defeats Sonic Adventure 37-15, Week 6 13. Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal defeats Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum 30-18, Week 6 14. Final Fantasy VII defeats Final Fantasy VIII 30-17, Week 10 15. Metal Gear Solid defeats Metal Gear Solid 4 31-12, Week 10 16. Suikoden III defeats Suikoden V 20-12, Week 10
Hmm...It started out fairly even, actually favoring older games a bit, but here in rivalry week 2, the voters have spoken and they heavily prefer recency. Interesting.

Ouch. Horrible results in the marquee matches so far; hoping that this is just the usual "weaker games overperforming early" like how Sunshine always seems to manage to go nearly even with strong opponents until about halfway through the first page before going in the tank but one of them is such a blowout that I'm really worried.

37/40. Only one of them was a stupid mistake; should've realized that the lack of "Super" preceding Adventure Island's name was a hint that it was regular NES. Other mistakes were Zombies Ate My Neighbors and The Conduit (the latter of which I've never heard of). Vegas Stakes was just a lucky guess, though.

Of course, a lot of times the results will already be on the spreadsheets even before they're posted in this topic. Maybe not necessarily the margins, but long before the overtime was resolved, the Schedule spreadsheet already showed, for example, Majora's Mask's upset of Ocarina of Time.

Nope, none here that are so close that I'd want to wait to see some other results before voting. At least none that I really care about.
There is, however, one that features probably two of my top ten games. Which sucks.
Mario Kart 64 (Twilight Barrel Galaxy Conference) Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (Twilight Barrel Galaxy Conference) GoldenEye 007 (Tanooki Blitzball Conference) Max Payne (Games of the Decades Conference) (Might as well just say "Not-GTA") Sonic Adventure 2 (Sonic Overload Conference) (lol SA1, worst Sonic on a 6th-gen system) Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (Nintendo Objections Conference) (I stand corrected. Since it looks like DPP has a commanding lead, I've got to go with RSE, since I really do like Ruby and Sapphire better than Diamond and Pearl, and it's only the presence of Platinum, the first of the "epic" games, that drives the Sinnoh trilogy up my list to the fringe of top-10 status) Fire Emblem 7 (Smackdown Hotel Conference) Tales of Symphonia (Cult RPG Galaxy Conference) (TTYD is my favorite Mario RPG, too, and probably somewhere in my top 10--but as I decided a few nights ago, Tales is most definitely my number 3.) Okami (Smackdown Hotel Conference) (I stand corrected again. Went into this topic thinking "FFX", then I remembered what Okami is really all about, and so now it's like, "Dude, can we really pull this off?") Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Brawl for Broke Conference) (...and so much for that.) Grim Fandango (Thousand-Year World of Sunshine Conference) (Not entirely sure if I care, but whatevs.) Half-Life 2 (Sonic Overload Conference) abstain; there's no way I can make a "funny upset" here. Valkyria Chronicles (Brawl for Broke Conference)

LeonhartFour posted... Or maybe people should stop making assumptions about how they think the match is going to turn out before they vote and just vote their favorites!
No, it's...never mind. Fine, I'll give you which match I was talking about. Ocarina and Majora's Mask are almost dead even to me, and I was seriously considering voting for Majora's Mask, but decided against it. Due to my innate love of upsets, the knowledge that such an upset was actually a possibility would've probably been enough to sway my vote.
Also, and I would've just edited this into my previous post if I hadn't just noticed this post to quote, SMG2 is currently in line to drop 4 spots this week after a solid win over a game that actually has looked like a decent midcarder, but only to drop another 4 spots rather than falling off the ballot completely should it follow my expectations and lose to RBY next week. What. Also, my unwillingness to drop SF64 down the ballot after it overperformed on RBY has somehow led to it being a top-10 game.

This really is sick. DKC2, a game that I dropped quite a bit last week upon realizing that it really hadn't done much and was mostly staying on my ballot due to having been there from the start and not losing since Week 1, seems to be on the verge of shooting back up to 12th. Galaxy, a game that barely cracked my top 25 last week, is likely going to be in my top 10 this week. And heading into this week, Final Fantasy VII seemed like a lock to return to my ballot this week; with all of the upsets in front of it, there's currently no room for it on next week's ballot, regardless of what happens in the Prime-Wind Waker match. Also, Galaxy 2 winning handily and currently in line to get kicked four spots down the ballot due to games not too far behind it upsetting games way ahead of it.
