But a bad ending ruins the entire series, especially for a show like LOST.

It's a good thing I don't feel this way or I'd think Battlestar Galactica was the worst series of all time. Now THAT was a bad ending.

But really, all, it just upsets me because I really liked the ending, and in topics like this people don't seem to realize that alternate opinions are valid and just belittle anybody who has them because THIS IS THE WAY IT IS, black and white, end of story. It's perfectly possible to love the ending of LOST, which I do. It's also perfectly valid to hate on it, I suppose, although I really don't understand the reasons why.

Here's the thing, though. It's the whole "statement of fact" thing that bothers me. In my opinion, a series where you loved five seasons and hated one is still a highly recommendable series (though I suppose I can feel your pain in that I don't necessarily recommend BSG to anybody, but I had other problems with that series than just the ending - and I still do recommend it from time to time). People act like the ending was objectively bad, which is just incorrect. It gave some of us exactly what we wanted from the series. I didn't care about the outrigger, I didn't care who was there before Jacob and Barry, and I certainly didn't care what the light did (yes, I thought the episode Across the Sea was horrendous, but in the two episodes afterwards I felt the concepts from it at least worked fine simply as plot devices). I cared about what happened to the characters, and I got a particularly moving answer to that question.

Now when I recommend LOST to people who haven't seen it I recommend it to them with this caveat: if you go in expecting a tightly-written, plot-driven series, expect to be sorely disappointed. Because I won't say it's "ALL ABOUT" the characters, but there's a difference between a character-driven show and a plot-driven show. In a character-driven show, it's about what's happening TO the characters, and in a plot-driven show, it's what's happening AROUND them that counts. I consider LOST a character-driven show, and thus, I was happy with the results, and particularly loved the sixth season. I loved the AU and the answer to what it was, and there were a couple of parts that were a BIT boring and roundabout (especially concerning the Temple), but that can be said about literally every season of the show.

Season 1 meandered a ton during its second half, especially after Ethan was killed
Season 2 had nine episodes of walking across the Island and Hatch aftermath.
Season 3 (my favorite season) had the Hydra Island arc and SiaSL, the worst episode of the series.
Season 4 had about half its episodes suck.
Season 5 had some of the most roundabout "because it has to happen that way" plotting I've seen since the last season of BSG.

So I guess what I don't understand is why it's so different. This is a flawed, but in many ways beautiful show we're talking about here, and though I wouldn't call it one of my favorites of all time (certainly not on the level of, say, Babylon 5 or The Sopranos), it was a ride I'll never forget, and one that I'll be sure to revisit in the future.

Sorry for the huge wall, but I guess I wanted to show that I wasn't just talking out of my ass here.

...is the sixth season of LOST seriously that bad? I mean I always assumed it'd be terrible because uber-serialized shows often fall apart during the final stretch (so utterly unfortunately) but people just won't shut up about that season. I mean damn!

One of the best seasons of the show. A great closing season and a fantastic ending. People are...yeah, people are people. I've barely ever heard of anybody watching the show on DVD after the fact who didn't watch it live having the dumb problems that people whine about.

What the f*** is with this topic? I really don't get why people just decide to hate on the last season of this show, other than that "it's the last season and they didn't do exactly what I wanted". *sigh* People get so pissy over the littlest things. If you have to belittle a season of LOST, belittle Season 4 or 5. Those are the ones that weren't good. Season 6 brought the show BACK.

And it's just stupid to have been praising the show to death for the first five years and then all of a sudden start calling it "worst show ever" just because of elements of one season that you don't agree with, and I see that all over. People who were saying it was one of the best shows ever on network TV all of a sudden saying "I'm never recommending this show to anybody ever", that's just dumb. Apparently they changed the first few seasons so they suck now?

To put in my two cents:

I've always thought Wicked was a bit overrated, myself. I feel about Wicked the way a lot of people feel about Rent (which is a show I love): I *like* it, but I don't love it, and I'm confused by the people who do. I love hearing Kristin Chenoweth sing any part, and I really like Idina too (in certain roles, anyway), so I listen to the recording from time to time, but about half of the songs are good (No Good Deed and What Is This Feeling being particularly awesome standouts) and about half are pretty blah (Wonderful is the most annoying song ever).

That said, check Kerry Ellis' version of Defying Gravity for something jaw-dropping:

I was introduced to Kerry Ellis as Svetlana in the concert recording of Chess and she blew me away. She's...damn good.

I'm not liking what you said about Eiko though. Based on art alone I thought she would be one of my favourite characters... Especially since she's a summoner too. I better end up loving this game.

Don't worry. I like literally every other member of the cast - major, minor, villain, and otherwise. It's a very diverse, very awesome cast. I just have a personal hatred for Eiko. But it's a pretty minor dark spot on the game in the grand scheme of things, as far as I'm concerned. I don't even know if my opinion is generally shared. >_>

And for the record, my favorite show is Les Miserables - as long as you see a good cast/have a good version of the recording. The music is such that you really need a great cast to pull off the show.

Absolutely love Broadway here - the majority of what I listen to is Broadway/musical theater soundtracks. I love musical theater. Just almost never bring it up here because I wouldn't think a gaming social board would be really interested in it.

I would like to suggest a hidden gem to everybody in this topic, though: Chess. A couple years back they did a 25th Anniversary concert edition a la Les Miserables, and it was utterly brilliant (okay, maybe Idina Menzel is not the best Florence, as much as I've loved her in other things like Wicked and Rent, but the show on the whole is great and even she has some superb moments). Not a lot of people seem to know about this show, especially in America where it kind of flopped on Broadway due to (what else?) executive meddling. But I would highly, highly, highly recommend anybody interested in musical theater check it out.

Hence why I like that episode better than some other terrible ones. The overacting during that scene is hysterical.

And yes, Data is cool. But I find myself dreading pretty much every Troi-related episode. Deanna AND Lwaxana. Is there EVER a good one?

Let me simply say this -- I grew up with both DS9 and Babylon 5. While it seems fairly blatant that Paramount took JMS' idea and ran with it against his wishes the two series become quite separate entities by the end of the first season. Especially once the major threat of DS9 is introduced; yes, it's true that DS9 is far and away the most serialized of the Trek series but its serialization and Babylon 5's serialization go in fairly different routes.

You will still see similarities. You will still shake your head from time to time at these similarities. But the casts especially are very vibrantly different. And both are immensely enjoyable. Trust me.

This being pretty much the best I can hope for. I know that Paramount ripped off the concept of Babylon 5 from JMS' pitch, but it's good to know that they end up going in different directions. It'll definitely be something that's on my list once it finally hits Netflix in, what, October or something, I think it was? (Why the hell would they put up all the Treks except the one that most people - apart from B5 fans - seem to consider the best?)

Also the dad thing no longer applies; just talked to him about it and we're both going to watch it on Netflix now since it's there and we won't have to buy really expensive DVD sets anymore. :p

As for Babylon 5, even considering that it's far and away my favorite show of all time (well, maybe not FAR and away - close seconds are The Sopranos and, yes, LOST, despite a fair number of flaws), I am willing to admit that, the first time through, the first season of Babylon 5 is pretty horrendous. When you're rewatching the episodes it's kind of fascinating seeing what he's actually doing in those episodes to slowly build the world that the series takes place in and how necessary the information actually is, but the episodes themselves are pretty horrendous at times - and it makes it worse that a lot of them are not inherently skippable.

Now, I don't mean to derail this topic into B5-speak, but suffice it to say that if you've only seen first-season B5, you haven't seen the show when it's actually good, apart from a couple isolated episodes. Seasons 3 and 4 are two of the best seasons ever committed to the small screen, and 2 and (the latter half of) 5 have moments of true greatness as well - they're way up there.

As helpful as you were, I ended up already having found it via Google.

(By the way, any references to future episodes are very sparse and non-specific, so it's pretty safe to watch without spoiling anything major.)

But yeah, that was awesomely hilarious. Sometimes it's hard to make out what he says over legions of overreacting fans screaming in laughter, but such is the world of Comic Cons, and I'm okay with that. :p He pretty much sums up my feelings exactly, but in a less irritable light. Awesomeness.

Anyway, at some point I plan on watching through DS9 too, despite the fact that I'm a Babylon 5 fan before anything else television and thus am preordained to hate it by my fanbase - I'm definitely openminded enough to give it a go, especially with how much I've grown to love TNG in the third and (especially) fourth seasons. I wasn't too worried about dropoff, even though I have heard non-specific horror stories about episodes in the seventh season. [Edit: Never mind what was here before; it's invalid.]

And God, when the Trill come back, they'd better not resemble The Host. Like, at all. That episode was unbelievably bad. I hated it.

Jumping into this topic, I've so far watched the first four seasons, and still have yet to get to an episode that tops "Justice" as the worst episode of the show so far. It's literally one of the worst hours of television I've ever seen. I would like to see this Wil Wheaton thing if it's available somewhere filmed (I would assume it is - either that or three or four Board 8ers who just happen to be in this topic were at the same convention). I would elaborate, but talking about that episode is not something I enjoy doing and I tend to go overboard with my hatred of it, so we'll just leave it at "I probably agree with Wil Wheaton on this one". It just felt like an abominably bad fanfiction by some sex-starved 35-year-old Trekkie who lives in his mother's basement and has no concept of good writing, to turn the old cliche up a couple notches.

But yeah, the first season is definitely the worst, and each season afterwards (at least up to 4, which is where I've watched to) is a HUGE step up from the last. 1 is terrible, 2 is getting there, 3 is good with great moments, and 4 is a pretty great season of television (with a couple low notes - The Host being the second worst episode so far....and no, I'm not counting the Season 2 finale; that's not an episode).

I barely remember most parts of the first season so I haven't really been able to comment too much yet (having replaced it with better memories of the second through fourth seasons), but I had to comment on Justice. Featuring all the characters on the whole show at their absolute dumbest.

Haha, thanks! :) This is actually WAY lower than I'm used to singing - if you'll believe it, I'm actually a tenor. But somehow the bass stuff just worked today. We just used the whole second take - didn't have to splice between any takes for the vocals, so it's a whole fluid performance (which I very much like).\

Also the piano, bass, and guitar were recorded live in one take. Which I'm pretty proud of.

"And this is why you don't see Dennis Hopper any more."

For better or worse, I'm pretty sure this is the moment when Doug Walker truly became the Nostalgia Critic. Nothing before this makes that much of an impression any more, but this is still highly entertaining. This much is apparent even from the very first line:

"You know, Hollywood has a talent for taking symbols of our cherished childhood and smashing them into indescribable amounts of fecal matter."

This review, despite a mere nine-minute runtime, has it all - a nice background retrospective on the franchise (including trailer reactions), a sense of humor, and the feeling that we've gone over the entire movie, or at least all of the relevant parts. That's actually pretty impressive considering sometimes he doesn't even manage to make you feel like he's covered as much as he could have even in a full half an hour. This review really makes you realize how terrible this movie has to have been, even if you haven't seen it (as I haven't).

It also has some great examples of what I think makes him so funny. From very clever writing and editing (unexpected Brokeback Mountain montage for the win), to some great, subtle line delivery ("I'm not going to act today!), to some terrific facial expression (going through the opening scene), to even an awesome classic freak-out-over-nothing moment when the Mario Brothers' last name is explained.

It's an easy target, but it's a good one, and this review hits almost every joke, and makes the most of an unusually short runtime. I have to admit that the whole "people in the movie responding to what he's saying" bit still feels forced, but that's a "thing" about his older reviews that you just have to get past, really, and it's pretty easy to ignore.

I think the biggest laugh the review got out of me, though, was the part riffing Dennis Hopper's performance, though. Don't want to say any more than that because if you agree with me you'll know what I'm talking about and if you disagree you'll continue flaming this topic and my opinions. You've also got to admit he gives credit where credit is due here - what little there is to be had; he will admit when something is good, and I like this tendency.

Short, sweet, and to the point, he's still not COMPLETELY invested in the character of the Nostalgia Critic at this point, but it's definitely getting there, and this marks the start of a great stretch in his video making history.

8/10

Aside: If you don't like the character of the Nostalgia Critic that's kind of like freely admitting you don't like the character of Daffy Duck, because that's basically what he's doing. I'm fine with that, but the term "Ritalin-deprived" is just kind of rude and uncalled for, and you wouldn't say Daffy Duck has "issues". There's probably a better way to get my point across, but I'm just saying. He's acting, guys. Chill.

Second aside: I swear not all of the reviews will be nearly this long.
